Clinging to Devoted Fiancé, Heiress Slays the World!-Chapter 732: Why Do You Care About Me?
Ji Wei stood on the balcony for a long time before turning back to the bedroom.
She sat on the sofa, picked up the remote control, and turned on the TV. She had promised to contribute to the viewership of Xia Duoduo’s drama. The show was actually quite captivating, but Ji Wei found herself somewhat distracted.
She didn’t know when it started, but her eyelids grew heavier and heavier until she couldn’t resist and drifted off to sleep.
Gu Moqian pushed open the bedroom door, carrying the strong scent of alcohol.
Tonight’s social engagement was for business purposes; if he had wanted, he could have declined. Yet Gu Moqian still went, simply looking for an excuse to drink himself numb.
Even in his intoxication, Gu Moqian’s mind was filled with thoughts of Ji Wei.
Thinking about how her health had just started improving, he wondered if she might struggle to fall asleep alone at home...
Gu Moqian had no heart for the socializing, and before the night was even halfway through, he came up with an excuse to have his driver bring him home.
As he made his way toward the bedroom, he loosened his necktie, feeling uncomfortably warm all over.
His drunken gaze swept across the room.
The TV was still on, playing silent advertisements, and soon his eyes landed on Ji Wei’s figure on the sofa.
The bedroom was lit only by the dim glow of a wall lamp. The subdued light haloed the woman’s slightly flushed face, softening her already delicate features. Her eyes were shut tight, her long lashes casting faint shadows beneath them.
She leaned against the sofa, clutching a throw pillow tightly to her chest. Her brow was slightly furrowed, suggesting her sleep was anything but restful.
Recalling the unpleasant encounter with her earlier that day, all Gu Moqian felt now was an overwhelming sense of heartache.
He strode quickly to Ji Wei, sat beside her, and gently raised his hand to smooth out the creases between her brows.
The woman instinctively stirred at the cool sensation on her forehead, uneasy but not opening her eyes.
The room wasn’t air-conditioned, and the windows were open, letting in the warm, humid breeze. It felt stifling.
Sweat was already beginning to bead on Ji Wei’s forehead, and the soft strands of hair around her face clung damply to her flushed cheeks, red like ripe tomatoes.
Turning on the air conditioner at that moment would likely make her catch cold, so Gu Moqian went to the bathroom, soaked a towel, and returned to gently wipe the sweat from her brow.
The warm, soft touch startled the sleeping woman into suddenly opening her eyes.
Her hazy gaze met the man’s deep, dark eyes in an instant. Ji Wei blinked a few times, thinking she might be imagining things.
Gu Moqian was still holding the towel, carefully wiping her sweat. His movements were tender, and his raised arm cast a shadow over her face. Ji Wei looked up at him, dazed, unable to process what was happening.
"Sorry for waking you up," he said softly, lowering his hand to steady his gaze on her, his expression mild.
Noticing the scent of alcohol on his breath, Ji Wei quickly propped herself up. "You’ve been drinking?"
Though her tone sounded calm and unruffled, Gu Moqian could read concern in the gradually clearing expression of her eyes.
"There was a social gathering tonight, so I had some drinks," Gu Moqian explained in a gentle manner.
Finding out he wasn’t drinking out of anger over what had happened earlier that day, Ji Wei felt an unspoken relief wash over her.
"Let me get you some honey water."
Ji Wei was just about to rise when her hand was suddenly taken by Gu Moqian.
The man’s chiseled face, tinged with a rare blush from the alcohol, lost its usual aloofness and gravity.
"Why are you caring for me?" Gu Moqian asked abruptly.
Ji Wei looked into his deep, steady eyes, her emotions churning inside her, though she forced herself to maintain her composure. "We’re still married, aren’t we? I wouldn’t just sit back and ignore you when you’re drunk."
