Chapter 142: Chapter 142: Battlefield of Carnage

Victoria Sinclair’s heart sank abruptly, her fingers unconsciously gripping the teacup.

She knew the hospital was nearby, but she hadn’t expected to encounter Eugene Vaughn and Vivian Miller.

Eugene paused his hand on the wheelchair, looking at Victoria with a complex expression.

Vivian wore a slightly smug smile, gently pulling Eugene’s sleeve with her other hand, "Eugene, let’s sit over there, the view is better."

Eugene’s gaze remained on Victoria, as if waiting for her reaction.

Victoria took a deep breath, trying to appear calm, and turned her head to Hector Grant and said, "Hector, let’s find another place."

Hector seemed to sense a slight oddity in the atmosphere, nodded, and got up to leave.

As they left, just as they were about to pass by, Vivian suddenly spoke up, "Miss Sinclair, long time no see. Why do you leave as soon as you see us? Are we interrupting something?"

Victoria stopped in her tracks, smiling faintly, "No, it just feels like this place isn’t quite right for us."

Vivian’s gaze flitted between Victoria and Hector, "This gentleman must be your friend, right? Why not introduce us?"

Eugene looked at Hector, his face slightly unsightly.

Victoria looked Vivian straight in the eye, her tone calm but with a hint of coldness, "There’s nothing to introduce. You and Eugene enjoy your dinner, we won’t disturb you."

With that, she walked past Eugene.

Her arm was grabbed by Eugene, his hoarse and low voice in her ear, "Victoria, we need to talk."

Victoria looked up at him, a flash of pain in her eyes, but she quickly concealed it, "Eugene, there’s nothing to talk about, you take good care of her."

Eugene held on, his eyes full of struggle, "Why aren’t you answering my messages?"

Victoria’s heart panged with bitterness, she resisted it, pretending to be calm as she asked, "You have to take care of Miss Wu, you’re too busy, so stop sending me messages."

After speaking, her cold gaze fell on her arm, "Please let go."

Vivian raised a hand to pull Eugene’s other hand, "Eugene, let’s not disturb Miss Sinclair on her date."

Victoria sneered inwardly.

Date?

This word sure hit the mark!

To Eugene’s ears, it was so grating, his face looked even worse, his hand slowly loosened, his eyes as cold as ice, he looked at Hector, his voice extremely sour, "To be able to have dinner with Victoria, you must be work colleagues, right?"

He extended a hand to Hector, "I’m Eugene Vaughn, Victoria’s ex-husband."

Hector smiled warmly, shaking his hand, "Hector Grant, not a colleague, a friend. Victoria invited me to dinner."

Eugene’s face turned ashen, falling silent.

A hint of a smile appeared on Vivian’s lips, "Someone who can make a workaholic researcher leave the lab for a meal must be quite special. I’m Vivian Miller, nice to meet you."

Hector nodded in acknowledgment.

Victoria took a deep breath, her chest heavy with discomfort, and whispered to Hector, "Let’s go."

"Miss Sinclair." Vivian quickly called out to her, her tone subtly provocative, "I know Eugene loves you, but we’ve been childhood friends for over twenty years, he’s not heartless towards me. Whether his affection for me is familial or friendship, I hope you won’t make it hard for him, and don’t force him. If you make him choose, it will only make my condition worse."

Eugene’s face darkened, and he said harshly, "Vivian, don’t go too far."

Victoria stood stiffly, took a breath, trembling all over, her hands unconsciously clenching into fists.

Hector smiled lightly, "First time I’ve heard someone make a moral plea sound so fresh and unconventional."

Vivian was just about to retort when Angela’s indignant voice came from the doorway, "More than fresh and unconventional, it’s shameless."

Everyone’s eyes turned to Angela.

Angela, dressed in a white shirt and black skirt, her long hair tied back, wearing no makeup but looking quite pretty, walked in energetically, her voice exceptionally bright, "Vivian Miller being sick has nothing to do with our Victoria. We’re not your parents, and Eugene is not your childhood sweetheart brother. We have no obligation to cater to you, and certainly no responsibility to consider your emotions. If you have to be sick, be sick, if you have to die, die. Don’t always use these dirty, despicable, and incompetent methods to threaten us. We don’t buy it."

Vivian, shaking with rage, her body trembling uncontrollably, tears streaming down her face, pointed at Angela, "You, you..."

"What’s ’you’? If you’re sick, hurry and see a doctor." Angela glared at her angrily.

Vivian suddenly began to pant, as if she couldn’t breathe, her face turning purple, her entire body shivering and stiff.

"Vivian?" Eugene, worried, grabbed her hand, noticing her condition worsening.

Though Hector was an obstetrician, he had some basic knowledge of other ailments, "She’s probably having breathing difficulties due to somatization, get her back to the hospital quickly."

Eugene wasted no time, pushing her out urgently.

Angela, looking at Vivian’s distressing state, felt a bit scared, nervously swallowing, she looked at Victoria, her voice weakening, "Did I go too far with my words? Will she die from my anger?"

Victoria reassuringly smiled and held her hand, shaking her head, "Don’t worry, she won’t die."

After speaking, her gaze settled on Eugene’s retreating figure.

He hurriedly pushed Vivian away, clearly he truly cared about Vivian’s health.

She feigned calm, unable to conceal the bitterness and aching in her heart, her smile gradually fading, her aura lowering, until his figure disappeared from sight, she finally lowered her head and exhaled a heavy sigh.

In a moment of awareness, Angela tugged her to the side, taking a couple of steps.

As she regained her senses, Angela whispered in her ear, "Who’s that? His body and looks rival Eugene’s, can’t tell them apart. Is he your new suitor?"

"No." Victoria hurriedly explained, "He’s our school alumnus, Hector Grant, he helped me a lot before. Today, I just had the chance to invite him to dinner as thanks."

Angela looked at Hector, stunned for a few seconds, her mind racing with memories.

Hector smiled, his eyes kind, gazing at Angela, stepping forward, his voice particularly gentle, "Long time no see, Angela."

Angela was taken aback, "Oh, I remember now. You’re Hector Grant, the student council president. Back in the day, during the comic convention, you dressed up as a zombie from Resident Evil, scaring me into tears in the small paths of the campus late at night."

Hector smiled awkwardly, nodding.

A feeling of depression and gloom in Victoria dissipated instantly, "Turns out you two have such a deep connection, seems like you have quite the relationship."

Angela frowned and grumbled with displeasure, "He scared me on purpose. We’re adults yet he’s still so childish. I refused his apology gifts several times, totally unforgivable."

Hector asked softly, "What about now? Still holding a grudge?"

Angela smiled faintly, "I’ve nearly forgotten about you, how could I still hold a grudge?"

Hector smiled without speaking, quietly watching her.

Angela patted Victoria’s shoulder, "You better treat our Victoria well, then I won’t dislike you."

Hector’s eyes dimmed slightly.

Victoria hurriedly explained, "Angela, we’re not what you think we are..."

"Okay, no need to explain, I understand." Angela linked arms with Victoria and continued to walk in, "He’s not worse than Eugene, but you still need to take it slow, don’t rush into another flash marriage."

Victoria sighed helplessly, looking back at Hector.

Hector followed, the group returned to the table and sat down.

Angela presented herself gracefully, continuously observing Hector, seemingly wanting to thoroughly evaluate her best friend’s potential partner.

After ordering, Angela curiously asked, "Hector, what do you do for work?" 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝘦𝓌𝑒𝑏𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝘭.𝒸𝘰𝑚

Hector replied, "Obstetrics and gynecology chief physician."

Angela paused slightly, then awkwardly chuckled, "Hehe, obstetrics and gynecology is good, stable income."

Victoria picked up her cup and took a sip of water.

Angela then asked, "What about your family?"

Hector replied, "My grandmother, my father, and me."

"How are your family conditions?"

"Not bad."

"Do you have a car and house?"

"Yes."

"Can you accept a partner who’s been divorced and has a child?"

Hector Grant seemed puzzled.

Victoria Sinclair immediately intervened, holding Angela’s hand, leaned over and whispered, "Angela, what are you doing?"

Angela retorted, "You brought him out to have dinner with me, didn’t you want me to help you check him out? Of course, I need to ask properly."

"No." Victoria’s scalp tingled with embarrassment.

Even though they were speaking softly, their words still reached Hector Grant’s ears.

He gave a light smile and said, neither warmly nor coldly, "Although today’s dinner is arranged by Victoria, it’s mainly to connect you and me."

Upon hearing this, Victoria felt a metaphorical knife stabbing her back again.

What?

Victoria was stunned.

This was supposed to be a simple thank-you dinner, how did it turn into a matchmaking meal?

And it was Hector Grant who said it.

Not only did he resolve the misunderstanding, but he also used her to advance further.

At this moment, Angela was frozen like a petrified creature, bewildered, cheeks flushed with a sudden blush, the earlier ease and calmness vanished, leaving only awkwardness, discomfort, and unease.

Hector Grant leaned in closer, hands resting on the table, his tone sincere: "I’m 30 years old, single, I don’t smoke, drink or gamble, don’t go to clubs, live a regular life, have no bad habits, and my annual health check is perfectly healthy. I have a car, a house, investments, and savings..."

"Wait a moment..." Angela forced an incredibly stiff and awkward smile, raised her hand to interrupt, her heart racing, her mind buzzing, her thoughts all scattered.

Under the table, she gently pinched Victoria Sinclair’s thigh.

Victoria gasped, quickly retracting her leg to dodge, her brow furrowed in pain, looking at Angela.

Angela’s smile was extremely rigid, she leaned toward Victoria Sinclair’s ear and whispered, "You know well enough that I’m an advocate of not getting married, why did you arrange a blind date for me?"

Victoria gave an innocent look.

She was also set up by Hector Grant!

She was truly innocent, Hector Grant took advantage of the situation, his approach was quite strategic.

Victoria couldn’t sabotage Hector Grant’s plan, nor did she know how to explain to Angela, fortunately, a server brought their dishes.

"Let’s eat first." Victoria changed the subject.

"Alright, let’s eat..." Angela, awkward to the point of wanting to merge with the floor.

The atmosphere of the meal was particularly silent, Angela’s cheerful nature was instantly transformed into introversion, merely focusing on eating.

Angela ate and occasionally glanced up at Hector Grant, just looking at his eyes and hair, feeling a sense of familiarity.

Surname Grant, chief obstetrician and gynecologist...

Angela suddenly realized and nervously asked, "Senior Grant, you wouldn’t happen to be working at the hospital next door, would you?"

Hector Grant nodded in response, "Yes."

"Then..." Angela’s face gradually turned pale, swallowing nervously, cautiously asking, "Have we met before?"

Hector Grant gazed at her, paused for a few seconds, seeming to have no reason to hide anymore, calmly said, "We have, you had scheduled a follow-up appointment and didn’t show up, your..."

Before he could finish his sentence, Angela dropped her chopsticks, grabbed her bag, and bolted.

The motion was smooth and without hesitation.

Too sudden, leaving both Victoria Sinclair and Hector Grant bewildered.

By the time they reacted, Angela had fled, and when they chased after her, she already hailed a taxi and left.

Standing by the road, Victoria Sinclair was anxious, distressed, nearly in tears, turned to Hector Grant: "It’s fine if you want to pursue her, but you can’t use me like this. Angela has thin skin, what if she breaks off with me?"

Hector Grant hadn’t expected this, his tone low, "I’m sorry, I didn’t expect her reaction to be so intense."

Victoria scoffed, sighed helplessly, "Dr. Grant, you’re a doctor, used to examining patients, naturally you wouldn’t find anything awkward. But Angela has never taken off her pants or spread her legs in front of any man, can you understand how shameful and awkward she must feel?"

"Sorry." Hector Grant felt guilty.

A text message came in.

Victoria opened the message and said, "You act as a suitor and claim to be her gynecologist, you’ve hit all the wrong chords, there won’t be a next chance."

Hector Grant exhaled gently, his eyes showing a trace of disappointment.

Victoria looked at the message from Angela, "I’ve never been this embarrassed in my life, let’s break off for five hundred years!"

Victoria replied: "I’m sorry, Angela, I messed up."

Angela: "Saying sorry a hundred times won’t help, I’m really angry this time."

"I owe Hector Grant a favor, and he’s particularly interested in you, so he used me to approach you."

"If you’d told me ahead of time that there’s a guy involved, and he’s my attending physician, I wouldn’t have come."

"Sorry."

"No more talking, break off for five hundred years."

"Can’t the time be shorter? Remove all the zeros after five hundred years!"

"It’ll still be five years."

"No! Five days!"

"Depends on my mood!"

"Alright, don’t be angry for too long, it’s unhealthy and causes wrinkles." After sending this message, Victoria finally breathed a sigh of relief.

From her understanding of Angela, her anger never lasts more than 24 hours.

Hector Grant took out his car keys: "I’ll drive you home."

"Thank you." Victoria thanked him, following him into the car.

The city lights were dazzlingly bright.

On the road, Hector Grant curiously asked, "Are you pregnant?"

Victoria was immediately stumped, shocked and surprised, "How do you know?"

Hector Grant drove seriously, responded casually, "Angela asked if I could accept a divorce with a child, I guessed you are pregnant."

Victoria pursed her lips bitterly, neither confirming nor denying, quietly stared out at the night view outside the window.

Half an hour later, the vehicle stopped under the apartment building.

Victoria got out of the car, waved to Hector Grant, "Bye-bye."

As she turned around, she saw Eugene Vaughn standing outside the apartment entrance waiting for her.

Hector Grant didn’t leave, he opened the door and got out, arm resting on the car roof, quietly looking at Eugene Vaughn from a distance.

Victoria hesitated a bit in her steps, took a deep breath, tried to calm herself, and slowly walked toward him.

"What are you doing here?" Victoria asked softly, her tone carrying a hint of estrangement, "Aren’t you supposed to be taking care of your delicate sister who could die at any moment?"

Eugene Vaughn’s gaze was locked onto her, his voice low and husky, "Victoria, we need to talk."

Victoria lowered her lashes, avoiding his gaze, "What’s there to say that hasn’t already been said?"
