Chapter 270: Hypocrite David!

Inside the car, Luis stared at the shrinking outline of the Suarez Estate and let out a quiet sigh.

Ronald noticed immediately and smirked.

"What’s wrong?" he teased. "Reminiscing about the previous beatings?"

The driver was none other than Jack. His expression remained as unreadable as ever, as if nothing in the car concerned him. Only he knew what was actually going on in his head.

David, seated in the front passenger seat, perked up at once, keenly interested in Luis’s response.

’Would he complain about my daughter? Or would he justify her actions—showing understanding?’

What came next, however, completely shattered his expectations.

"Kinda," Luis replied, his gaze unfocused, still fixed on the scenery outside the window. "I’m used to it."

"!!!?"

"Luis... you—"

Ronald stared at his son with a complicated expression. He had already guessed that Luis wouldn’t truly be angry with Alicia—but never, in his wildest dreams, had he expected ’this’ kind of answer.

’Are young people just this wild nowadays, or have we really gotten old?’

He sighed inwardly when a sudden thought struck him, and his gaze sharpened.

’Wait.’

’Is Luis... the submissive one in their relationship?’

His eyes widened.

’If that’s the case, then who did he inherit those genes from?

It can’t be me. So that only leaves—’

’Lumine?!’

Realisation hit him like lightning.

’No wonder... that explains everything!’

’When I was pursuing Lumine, she kept rejecting me back then. She must’ve been incredibly bashful.’

’I was always gentle with her, so her true nature never showed...’

Ronald’s brows softened as emotion welled up in his chest.

’The nourishment of our love must have allowed her to let go of that timid self and become so outgoing.’

While Ronald drowned in his own delusions, David was having a crisis of a very different kind.

’Just how many beatings did it take for Luis to get used to this? And how did my little princess become so violent?’

’Maria... did I fail as a father?

---

Luis found the sudden silence inside the car unsettling. He turned to look at the others, confused.

’Did I say something wrong?’ he wondered.

’I’m just used to Alicia’s sudden tantrums. She’ll return to normal soon enough.’

His gaze flicked toward Ronald. ’If you’re so worried about affecting our relationship, then why provoke the fight in the first place?’

He rolled his eyes internally, then paused.

’Wait... could it be he feels guilty?’

’That would explain the silence.’

A look of understanding crossed his face, and his resentment toward his father eased slightly.

’Heh~’

’In that case, I’ll forgive you for now, Dad.’

The silence persisted for the rest of the journey, each person lost in their own thoughts.

---

About thirty minutes later, the car approached the Raven Guild headquarters. Instead of stopping at the main entrance, Jack drove past it and circled around to the rear of the building.

"Is there a back entrance to the guild?" Luis asked.

"Not exactly," David replied, stroking his beard with a grin. "You’ll understand in a moment."

By then, he had already pushed aside his earlier worries.

’So what if Alicia’s a little violent? Let Luis handle it.’

’She’s still my precious little princess.’

With his mood improved, David leaned back.

The car came to a stop at what looked like an ordinary parking spot behind the building. Just as Luis was about to voice his confusion, the ground beneath them—along with the car—began to descend.

"Huh? A hidden elevator?"

"Surprised?" David said proudly. "It’s a secret level beneath the headquarters. Only a handful of people know about it."

Luis’s eyes narrowed as his gaze shifted between David and Ronald. Questions piled up in his mind, but he suppressed them for now. He knew the answers would come soon enough.

Instead, he focused on something else.

"What’s this underground level used for?" he asked. "And when was it built?"

David had expected the first question. However, the second question caught him slightly off guard. Still, he answered honestly.

"It was completed four years ago, though we only put it into use recently. As for its purpose... we’re currently focused on scientific research."

Luis immediately connected the dots.

"Is this related to that so-called discovery?"

His gaze shifted to Ronald, who nodded.

"Then just what kind of discovery is important enough for you to hide it like this?" Luis asked, brows furrowed.

"You’ll understand once you see it," Ronald said, sidestepping the question. Then his eyes sharpened.

"But I’m more curious about something else. Why were you interested in the construction period?"

Luis pressed his lips together before answering.

"...Espionage."

Ronald understood at once.

"You’re worried the Royal Family already knows about this," he said slowly. "Or that they’ve planted spies inside the Raven Guild."

David’s expression darkened. "Are you certain, Luis?"

"Not just worried," Luis said, shaking his head, fingers interlocked.

"If what Uncle David said is true, then the Royal Family almost certainly has information on this ’secret’ level."

He continued calmly, laying out the danger.

"Back then, Uncle David wasn’t as guarded as he is now. His actions were completely transparent to them. If spies were mixed in during that period, it would’ve been nearly impossible to filter them out."

To his surprise, David’s expression actually relaxed.

Sensing Luis’s confusion, Ronald spoke.

"The Raven Guild didn’t have a powerful background like the major families," he said.

"The strongest awakener in the entire guild was only an Overlord-ranked individual—David himself."

"He recruited many awakeners back then. Even if spies slipped in, only a few trusted aides had access to the core secrets. Still... who knows how much information leaked."

Luis looked thoughtful.

"Then, Dad..."

David interrupted, his expression solemn.

"Before, I wouldn’t have cared as much," he admitted. "But after your deduction regarding the truth behind Maria’s death, Luis... there’s no way I’d allow those so-called spies another chance."

Luis’s eyes brightened, a wide smile forming. He seemed to understand something.

David paused—then added something that sounded completely unrelated.

"Unfortunately, during our last expedition, many Raven Guild members were lost."

Ronald chuckled at David’s shamelessly hypocritical tone. Even Jack’s poker face cracked, a quiet laugh escaping him. 𝓯𝙧𝓮𝓮𝒘𝓮𝙗𝙣𝒐𝒗𝒆𝓵.𝓬𝓸𝒎

Luis looked at David with genuine admiration.

"Uncle David," he said sincerely, "you really do have the bearing of Luis Suarez’s future father-in-law."
