Consequences of Dumping the Obsessive Boss: Stuck with Him Forever-Chapter 19: Searching for Evidence
Summer Lowell followed her memory to the study door, using her past experience as his secretary to input the password he frequently used, gaining smooth access to his study.
Once inside, Summer recalled Maxim Sinclair’s habit of filing documents. She felt her way to the third bookshelf, where she fumbled around for a while and finally found what she needed on a middle upper shelf.
Maxim Sinclair liked to keep some files in his private study that were not suitable to be displayed openly, with evidence of communication with company insiders belonging to this category.
If she guessed correctly, Maxim Sinclair must have bribed staff at Stellart in secret.
From what she knew, he would definitely store related documents in the study at Varden Villa.
Using the desk lamp’s light, Summer Lowell carefully searched and easily found the file concerning Stellart.
Having found it, Summer let out a light sigh.
It really wasn’t easy; she didn’t expect that in the end, she would resort to the means she despised to obtain evidence proving her innocence.
With mixed emotions, Summer opened the file. Upon reading the contents, she couldn’t help but let out a cold laugh.
She was right; the person scheming behind her back, trying to pull her down from the director position, was indeed her old rival designer Linda.
Then, Summer quickly memorized some key points on the document using the light.
Her phone was still in Maxim Sinclair’s possession, so she couldn’t take pictures. She had to remember some critical content by memory and think of another way to handle Linda later.
Time was pressing; after memorizing hastily, Summer put the file back as it was and retraced her steps back.
Walking back quietly barefoot to her room, just as she closed the door, the overhead light suddenly turned on.
She stiffened and turned around to find Maxim Sinclair leisurely leaning against the headboard: "The bathroom in the room isn’t suitable?"
Summer forced a laugh, pointing outside: "Couldn’t sleep, so I took a walk outside."
Maxim’s expression didn’t change: "Do you think I believe that?"
Seeing that her bluff didn’t work, Summer decided to tell the truth: "Yes, I pretended. I went to your study and found the evidence that you bribed Linda."
"Go on." Maxim’s face showed no surprise; he even crossed his arms.
Summer couldn’t quite understand why Maxim had this reaction. After a brief thought, she decided to continue from where she left off, "I guessed right, you indeed bribed Linda, and now I’ve memorized all the evidence. Even if you destroy it, it’s useless unless you kill me."
Maxim, looking at Summer standing in the middle of the room, waving her arms at him, burst out laughing joyfully.
Summer, who was initially excited, was stunned by his laughter: "You... I’ve confirmed it, the evidence is real, not forged by you, why are you laughing?"
"It’s nothing," Maxim toned down his laughter, looking at the puzzled Summer and explained, "I used to think you were like a little fox wearing a mask. But your acting was too good; when you pretended to be obedient, it was so skilled that it made me suspect my intuition was wrong. But now it seems my intuition was right; you are indeed a little fox."
Summer wasn’t interested in his evaluation of her. Keeping a stern face, she waited for him to finish laughing before continuing: "Stop with the nonsense, the situation now is that I have the evidence unless you resort to silencing me."
"So what?" Maxim’s smile hadn’t faded as he looked at Summer, "You finally got your evidence, then what? Call the police? Claim I imprisoned you, but do you think the outside world would believe you? Especially your bosses, would they believe I coerced you?"
These words directly hit a painful spot for Summer.
Since returning home, Summer had keenly felt that the top management at Stellart didn’t trust her as they used to.
Several high-level executives even started subtly probing into Summer and Maxim Sinclair’s exact relationship.
If Summer really called the police over this, not only would the Stellart executives not believe her, they might start suspecting she had already been bought by Maxim Sinclair.
Sometimes, even Summer felt her relationship with Maxim Sinclair was somewhat ambiguous.
She even wondered if she had actually developed feelings for this unpredictable man in front of her.
So if she weren’t the involved party, she would probably think this was Maxim playing some new flirting game with his girlfriend.
Seeing her remain silent, Maxim impatiently urged, "So? You worked so hard all night to get your evidence, then what? What do you plan to do next?"
Seeing him willing to continue the discussion, Summer, a bit excited, took a few steps forward: "Let’s make a deal; I can promise not to disclose your bribery of Linda."
"A deal, what’s the price for your silence? Let’s hear it." Maxim looked at her expectantly.
Under his expectant gaze, Summer inexplicably felt like she was falling into some trap, hesitating for a long time before speaking: "I want you to stop harping on about my past undercover work around you. It’s fair, after all, Stellart has designers you bribed, and I, as your former secretary, am Stellart’s person."
"You want a clean slate?" Maxim slowly put away his smile, "Summer, you sure are good at calculations!"
"I think it’s a good deal; maybe you should consider it?"
Seeing she seemed serious, Maxim couldn’t help but laugh out loud again, taking a long time to stop. Then he met Summer’s inexplicable gaze and said, "Summer, oh Summer, haven’t you realized? The evidence of bribing Linda is true, but the things written in it haven’t been done by her yet."
A moment of realization hit her.
The file indeed clearly detailed the transactions between both parties, but as Maxim said, the tasks required of Linda hadn’t happened yet.
If Summer rashly took the so-called evidence to Stellart’s bosses, not only would she fail to report Linda successfully, but she’d also get labeled as suppressing dissidents.
Moreover, now that Maxim knew she had seen the document, he would surely call Linda in advance to cancel their previous plan.
In short, all her nervous efforts throughout the night... were all in vain.
Summer looked incredulously at Maxim, who hadn’t laughed enough: "So, you knew I would go to your study all along?"
"Not too stupid," Maxim shook his head repeatedly, "One more thing I should remind you of: the designer Sheryl wasn’t bribed by me, and I have nothing to do with her. Yet, I do know she is targeting you, but unfortunately, I don’t know who’s directing her."
Maxim’s expression seemed half-true, half-false: "What to do, Director Lowell, worked hard all night, only for it to end in vain!"
