Chapter 208: Genny’s secret part 2

Braelyn’s POV

"Are you Mummy’s close friend?" She asked as soon as her mother left. Her question was a bit suspicious. My brows pulled together.

I nodded. "Why did you ask?" I questioned her.

She sighed." Because mummy normally doesn’t agree that she is my mummy. You must be best pals for her to tell you." The girl admitted to leaving me more stunned. What was going on here?

My eyes narrowed at the girl. The more I looked at her the more subtle similarities she had with her mother. The same micro expression that someone like me, who had known Genny for the longest time, would pick up. Although it was apparent she took more after her father, whoever that might be.

"Do you know why she does that?" I asked the girl despite knowing she might not have the answer to such a complex question. It was apparent that Genny was hiding her relationship with this girl. I wondered why?

Did it have something to do with the father? Or was she ashamed of being a single mother? I just couldn’t figure out why. If she was hiding the girl, why did she have her over in her apartment? And where has she been all this time?

I turned into detective mode trying to figure out if there was something that I missed. A clue that was out in the open.

A cute frown crossed her face. She puffed her cheeks then pouted. "I am not allowed to talk about it. Mummy said it’s adult matters." She said faking a serious expression mimicking Genny as she spoke

"The only reason I am telling you is because Mummy told you I am her baby," she said. Her words were childish, but she sounded pretty mature.

I couldn’t hold back the chuckle. She was so cute, and before I knew it, I was patting her head. "You are so cute. It makes me want to have a daughter. " I said then froze on realising what I said.

"Sure.." Alora beamed. "Then we can be friends," she said, showing teeth which had a visible lost tooth.

My eyes stung. I retreated my hand. "Yes, if I have a daughter, you can be her friend like a big sis," I said in a low voice. Alora was a child but she still noticed my mood swing

She frowned, touching my face, her eyes narrowed at me like a little adult. "There is no need to be sad. Alora promised to be the best big sis for your daughter," she said carefully. Her words only made my eyes.

"That’s really sweet," I said, rubbing my eyes. It would be embarrassing if I ended up tearing up in front of a child.

Footsteps drew to the sitting room. Genny’s worried voice spoke from behind us. " Did something happen?" She asked, drawing our attention. I glanced over with a practised smile.

"It is nothing. " I shook my head. Alora parted her lips to talk, but as soon as her eyes fell on the cups of hot chocolate drink and biscuits, she completely forgot whatever was on her mind. Her eyes lit up immediately.

My heartstrings tugged watching Alora. I don’t know what Genny’s reasons for hiding her daughter were but I would give anything just to have a daughter like her. It didn’t matter who the father was

I guess those are just hopeful thoughts. Genny placed the tray on the small table. Her gaze fell on me. Genuine worry was in them. She knew something was off.

Genny had already changed out of her bathrobe, and her damp hair was wrapped in a towel.

"Are you sure you are fine Brae?" She asked slowly, handing over a cup of hot chocolate to me. "You don’t look good." I accepted the cup and stared at the surface.

"I have a lot going on," I said, stirring the cup. I glanced up to see Genny giving Alora her cup and even scolding her to be careful, the cup was hot. They seemed close...not how I expected an estranged mother and daughter to look.

"So Genny what’s the story..I am all ears." I chimed. She laughed then urged Alora to take her drink and biscuits closer to the TV. Alora happily complied. She sat on the rug and started eating, paying no attention to us.

Genny sighed before glancing back." It’s complicated," she said.

"Do I know the father?" I asked carefully. Something flickered in her gaze. Hesitation I guess.

"Yes, it’s someone you have met." She said, I could see her reluctance to share his name

"Does the father know about her?"

A silent beat passed between us. She shook her head.

"It is better this way after all alora was unplanned and complicated. If he sees her, he might suspect, and at this point, I don’t want to lose her." She explained, then bent over to pick up her mug. She stirred the cup before taking a sip.

"How did it happen?" I was approaching the topic carefully. I didn’t want to startle her; it felt like a difficult topic.

She sighed again then held her mug with both hands. She was looking at her reflection on the surface.

"I got pregnant in my final year first semester, then gave birth a few weeks after our last exams." She revealed, leaving me stunned. My mind went back to our final year. Genny and I are around the same age. We both turned 17th in our first year and spent 4 years in the university meaning she gave birth at 20. Alora was 5.

I didn’t suspect anything weird about her then. There was no indication she was pregnant. Genny normally wore baggy clothes, making it easy for her to hide her pregnancy.

"I can’t believe I never suspected you were pregnant. Why didn’t you tell me?" I said bitterly. It made sense why she avoided going out most of the time. She was busy hiding her pregnancy

Genny laughed. "You are not a bad friend. I was just really good at hiding it, plus I secretly didn’t want to keep it. As I said, it was complicated," she explained. My eyes narrowed at her.

"Then make it uncomplicated then." I pouted. She smiled at me.

"Do you remember that street racer I had the biggest crush on? The one who was schooling abroad?"

My brain started working until smoke came out of my ears. "Genny, you had a lot of crushes. Every week you had a change of heart." I said exasperated. Genny was a bit of a wild card then

Although she simped over a lot of handsome guys. She never really dated anyone, I thought she might not be straight. That was until one day she kissed a stranger, crying why he ghosted her...

Wait a minute!!!

Was she really crying over an ex? I didn’t know. The ex being Alora’s father. My gossiping stomach was ready for a gist.

"You remember that day I got drunk crying over some random guy I kissed, Tommy from our department," she recalled, and my eyes went wide. "That was the day after Alora’s father ghosted me after a one-night stand."

My jaw fell. How dare she keep this premium tea from me?
