Chapter 257: Chapter 257: Strange (Four updates)
Guo Caixia came back shortly.
Leading her daughter, the child seemed a bit listless, apparently really sick.
"What’s wrong? Did you see someone? Did they prescribe any medicine?"
Actually, the medical office in the school was quite rudimentary too, without any real doctors, just stocked with common Western medicines like cold medicines, headache powder, cooling oil, and so forth.
Guo Caixia nodded, "Got two cold tablets."
Yang PeiMin asked, "Can children take medicine meant for adults?"
Guo Caixia hesitated, "I guess they should be able to."
Someone else brought up this issue, reminding that the school only had adults, so no children’s medicines were stocked, so someone suggested: "A child’s body is weak, not as strong as an adult’s. Maybe we should reduce the dosage, even if it’s ’Wolf and Tiger Medicine’ it should be milder, right?"
Guo Caixia agreed.
Yang PeiMin climbed onto the bed to tidy up some clothes; after school, she would take them to the guest house, and with no more time, she quickly lay down.
The majority of the other people in the dormitory were still reading or reviewing, with only a few like Yang PeiMin taking a nap.
Those two were Miao Ying and Cheng Aihua.
Yang PeiMin had just fallen asleep when she was awakened by a coughing fit. Still groggy, she reached out for the bed next to her, finding nothing, and then remembered that this coughing wasn’t coming from Xiao Niu, and this wasn’t her room in the military quarters.
It was Guo Caixia’s daughter, Xiao Lian, coughing.
Yang PeiMin pulled the blanket over her head and face and went back to sleep.
When she woke up, Feng Erxi was just standing by her washstand, and he casually mentioned to her: "I won’t be returning to the dormitory these nights."
Feng Erxi was somewhat surprised but nodded, "Alright, just be careful out there."
During class, Yang PeiMin brought a cloth bag to school, and Li Yue, upon noticing, asked, "What are you doing?"
"Nothing much."
"Are you going out?" Li Yue immediately guessed her intention, "When will you be back? Bring me back something tasty."
Yang PeiMin gave her a sidelong glance, "I’m busy, got things to do."
"All secretive, have you found something to do outside?"
Yang PeiMin pushed her towards the front blackboard, "Stop it, class is about to start."
Li Yue and Yang PeiMin were the same age and both from the north, living quite near each other, just a couple of hundred kilometers apart. Li Yue was a straightforward girl, and they got along well, both straightforward and enjoyed joking around with each other.
When Yang PeiMin got to the daycare, it was just past six o’clock, and most of the children had already left. She hurriedly ran inside, and Xiao Niu rushed towards her happily shouting "Auntie!"
Yang PeiMin hugged her, feeling her heart soften, and she hugged Da Niu as well, "Kids, let’s go home."
Holding one child by each hand, they headed home.
Since it was their first day of school, Yang PeiMin planned to take them out to eat, usually just packing food back from school in a thermos.
She felt reassured by the children’s behavior; they were lively and shared the day’s new experiences at school along the way, Yang PeiMin could feel their happiness, it seemed like they had adapted quite well to the daycare.
"Well then, since you both behaved well today, Auntie will take you out for some little wontons."
The children’s eyes were sparkling.
It was unexpected to run into a roommate at the restaurant.
It was Miao Ying and Liu Yilan.
Both of them were surprised to see Yang Peimin, "Peimin?" Then, they saw the two children she was holding by the hand, their surprise even greater, "Are, are these your children?" Miao Ying asked while pointing at Da Niu.
"No, they’re my friend’s daughter."
After greetings were exchanged, there was no intention of sitting together.
They usually didn’t interact much in the dormitory either.
However, when they sat down, they ended up next to each other’s table.
Miao Ying even leaned over, gossiping about Yang Peimin’s situation, "Peimin, where is the mother of these two children, why are you taking care of them?"
"She’s busy."
"Erxi told me you’re not coming back to the dorm to sleep tonight?"
"I’m staying at my friend’s place, helping her take care of the kids for a few days."
"You didn’t take time off to help, did you?"
"No, the children go to kindergarten."
"I see, but you’re still running back and forth quite a bit."
Yang Peimin nodded, the small wonton was ready. She made a small bowl for Xiao Niu, first put two in to let them cool before eating.
Across the way, Miao Ying and Liu Yilan had also ordered small wontons and were huddled together whispering softly and eagerly eating.
The children ate slowly. After Miao Ying and her companion finished, Yang Peimin was still cooling the wontons for Xiao Niu, and she said, "We’re going back first, you guys take your time eating."
Yang Peimin nodded at her.
Liu Yilan, however, stared at Da Niu and her sister for a while before leaving.
Once out the door, she couldn’t help but say to Miao Ying, "Did you notice, the two children Yang Peimin is looking after are dressed so plainly? Their clothes are so washed out, how does their family even have money to send them to kindergarten? And two of them at that."
Miao Ying looked at her, perplexed, "What’s so weird about that? If there’s no one at home, they have to send them even if they don’t have money. Should they keep them locked up at home?"
"Isn’t Guo Caixia’s daughter kept at home? Isn’t it like that for poor families’ children? If there are neighbors around, they ask them to keep an eye out, then rush back after work to feed them. I’ve seen plenty of that."
"What you said is common, but there are exceptions, aren’t there?"
Liu Yilan shook her head, "No, I find it very strange. Yang Peimin is not a local, she just came here with her husband. How could she have such friends that would let a still-student like her take care of children?"
Miao Ying was also intrigued, "So what do you think?"
Liu Yilan said, "Yang Peimin herself is a strange existence. Even if she married a junior officer, it’s odd she dresses so well, is so meticulous—those bed linens! I once saw her applying skincare, on her hands, and if you pay attention, you’ll notice her hands, they’re so delicate, not at all like someone married and doing household chores."
Speaking of which, Miao Ying also noticed, since she slept on the bunk below and often saw at close range the wrists and ankles revealed amidst climbing up and down. The skin was indeed very good, and even though she was young and naturally beautiful, for the hands to be soft and delicate from work—that meant she must have used some high-quality skincare products.
Liu Yilan, seeing Miao Ying seeming to agree, continued, "That’s why I said she’s strange."
"But if you have money, you could buy skincare products, what’s so strange about that?"
Liu Yilan, seeing she did not fully grasp her underlying point, said resignedly, "Then let’s just wait and see, I think there’s definitely a secret with Yang Peimin."
