Death Mage with an SS-Rank Talent-Chapter 279
Deep in the Wilds...Dorkan Swamps...
"Did you find out who was responsible for the deaths of the monsters on such a large scale for the past few months?" a monster that looked like a frog asked.
It is a frog monster that is famous for poison and water elemental attacks, and was mainly found in the swamp areas. In any other areas, its body doesn’t like to stay for long.
These frog monsters can survive in areas where there is water, but in dry lands, that would be quite the opposite. If they were ever found in such places, they would be giving their enemies a great chance to eliminate them. So, they never left the swamps or lands filled with high concentrations of moisture and water.
This particular frog monster is a peak Rank-8 monster on the cusp of becoming Rank-9. It was one of the monsters that saw that there was something going on around Fort Last Bastion.
In the past few months, a lot of monsters disappeared.
It was quite common for a few to die every now and then in the hands of the humans, but the numbers were too high, and if that was among low-ranking ones, it wouldn’t have bothered them at all.
Hundreds of thousands of Rank-1 to Rank-3 exist, which may not see the next day, even in their lands. If they died, it wouldn’t have mattered, nor would the frog have cared, but most of the monsters were Rank-4 and even Rank-5. The number that died was too high.
It was quite alarming, but not many monsters took it as an issue. Very few did, and they sent some monsters to look for answers. Some of those returned, but some didn’t. The frog knew that they might have died due to the same reason as the disappearance of the monsters before.
---
"Your highness, we did find something. In fact two things, one was regarding the monster’s disappearance, and the other was something else", one of the subordinate monsters spoke.
"Speak".
"Master, whenever there was a disappearance, we saw that the battlefield where the disappearance happened was cleaned. We looked into it and we found that the humans from the fort were also looking for the reason behind that".
"It may be the humans who were behind that, but they believe that the cults were involved, as monsters wouldn’t erase the battlefield. If it was someone from the alliance, there was no need to hide the fact of such feats".
"So, the humans from the fort believe that the cults are collecting the monster corpses for some reason", the monster gave the information that it had acquired.
"The cults, huh?" the frog monster thought for a while, "I knew that trusting those cults was a bad idea, but we needed to trust them at the time to reduce the growth of the human race. I always suspected that these cults would stab us in the back, and that’s exactly what they were doing, those fucking bastards", the frog monster cursed.
The low-ranking monsters were surprised to hear those words.
They knew about the divisions among the humans, such as cults and other criminal enterprises, which was why they couldn’t reach a stage where they could truly threaten the monsters on the land.
It was those divisions that they were counting on to delay the humans from becoming a menace to the monster races, but the world started upgrading. So, who could reach further faster became unknown, a gamble that the monsters didn’t want to partake in.
It was then that a war started among the human race.
The Alliance vs. the Cults.
It made the higher-ranked monsters happy.
War among themselves means a lot of potential high-ranking individuals, along with old high-ranking individuals, would disappear from the face of the world. It would be a great outcome for the monster races.
At that time, the cult leaders came to some high-ranking monsters with a proposition. It was that the monsters would attack some key, important human locations and divert the Alliance’s eyes away from concentrating fully on the Cults.
In exchange, they gave some resources to the monsters.
It was not just for the resources, but for the future survival of the monster races; they believed that either humans had to be completely eliminated or brought down to such a position that they wouldn’t be a threat to the monster races’ survival.
So, they agreed but with conditions that the cults wouldn’t actively hunt the monsters, at least in a few areas which are quite important for the monsters.
The Monsters and the cults came to an agreement.
As per the agreement, the monsters attacked the Fort Last Bastion, essentially destroying it and devastating the regions around that.
It took a lot of resources for the alliance to rebuild the fort and stabilise the region around it, which means they had to take those away from somewhere else.
It was becoming difficult for the alliance to maintain the balance with war on two fronts, internal and external.
At least for external issues, they can easily find out if there was an attack, at least a few minutes before the attack takes place, as long as the scouts were good, but for the internal attacks, like how it happened in Duskmist city, they come without any warning.
Almost everything was going well for the cults, but they have no idea that someone who they ignored as a small threat was becoming their doom, step by step.
---
"I think I should speak with others and show what’s happening. If we are caught off guard by those damned cults, we would face extinction or worse, turn into experiments", the frog monster announced.
"Wait a minute, you said that there are two pieces of information, what is the second one?" the frog monster asked.
When it heard what the information was, shock appeared on its face.
"We can’t delay. We need to convene an Elders meeting as quickly as possible", the frog declared in a panic.
Its subordinates were surprised by the actions of the Frog, but it was not their place to question but do as they were ordered to do so.
