Chapter 222: Reward For Her Patience

By the time Brooke arrived at the mansion, there were at the very least ten doctors at the premise, and five specialists inside of the home equipped operating room.

"How is he?" Brooke marched over to Gilbert, who had just gotten out of the elevator.

Gilbert walked forward, bridging the gap between them, he took a quick look around then said, "Please, come with me, we can discuss more in private."

But Brooke was more concerned with her husband’s health, "What are the doctors saying? Will he..."

"Just come with me, I’ll explain it all in detail." He insisted, then went towards his bedroom, with Brooke slowly following behind him.

It had been an entire day since Jen left her apartment, an entire day of being governed by fear and anxiety. Oliver had tried to convince her that Ethan wouldn’t find anything, but her worries did not ease up.

Eventually, her fear of getting found out overshadowed her Ethan. She reached for some of Avery’s clothes stashed in Oliver’s closet and got dressed up.

She stared at the mirror, "You can do this." She had wanted to chant, but the risk involved was far too great.

What if Ethan was still at her place?

What if he had seen the files already?

The image of avery on a hospital bed flashed before her eyes. Reflexively her feet backed away, the realization that she could be next on his list started to hit her hard.

She recalled the conversation she had with Oliver last night, and the warning he gave her.

"For now, you will stay here with me, going back to that man is too dangerous." He had told her, and she remembered agreeing wholeheartedly to his words.

But now...

"Staying here is equally dangerous, the longer I stay away the more Ethan is bound to suspect I’m planning something against him." More than that, she was afraid that he would discover the link between her and Oliver.

She reached for the emergency phone he had given her, snatched the cash he left at home and then left his apartment.

It was already midday, and Susan had started to suspect that Serena was not going to take Cassie back home with her. Julian had left to carry out some matter, and had entrusted Cassie and the special task from last night to her.

She stole a glance at her bag, the content of her little expedition sat in wait. She had already contact the doctor friend of her brother and was supposed to meet with him about an hour ago.

But Cassie’s mother hadn’t arrived yet, something that began to seem suspicious to her.

Left with not many options, she went to Cassie’s room to have a word with her. However, when she arrived Cassie was still in the shower. She parted her lips to call out to her, but promptly stopped herself at the sight of Cassie’s phone sitting on her bed.

The screen lit up with a message, attracting Susan’s attention. Quietly, she crept towards the object, and swiped it off the bed. She stared at the screen, surprised to see a threatening message displayed on the screen.

-"You think I’m fucking around?! Bring me my five million! Or else I’ll revea the truth to everyone!"-

Susan frowned, Cassie was buying someone off? But for what? The message didn’t specifiy what.

Swiftly, Susan tapped on the message which lead to their chat window, surprised that Cassie didn’t have a lock on her phone. She took out her phone, alternating her gaze from the bathroom door back to their phones, as she copied the number into hers.

Just as she typed the last number, her phone suddenly started to ring!

Susan tensed up as the bathroom door was suddenly pushed open, and out of it came Cassie in a rushed frenzy.

Their eyes locked, and the first thing Cassie noticed was her ringing phone in Susan’s hand.

"What are you doing with that?!" She snapped, snatching her phone out of Susan’s grip.

Susan peered at the screen, and noticed it was Serena calling. Recalling her composure she cleared her throat, "I noticed your mother was calling and wanted to confirm her whereabouts."

Cassie sent her a harsh glare, "I don’t need you doing that for me." In a harsher tone she said, "And don’t come into my room without my permission!"

Calmly, Susan responded, "I apologize, I was just worried about you, you had been in the shower for a while and hadn’t come out. With a little one on the day, you’ll need as much help-" she was saying, but Cassie cut her off with a hand wave.

"That’s enough aunt, you can leave now. I have to take this call." She said, shooing her out of the room.

Ssan gladly took the opportunity to slip out of the room, on her way out she quickly saved the number she had collected.

Meanwhile, inside the room Cassie couldn’t dismiss the suspicion she was feeling. But at the moment she was too enraged with her mother’s insistence to put much thought into it.

When Serena called back she answered with a hiss, "Didn’t I tell you not to come pick me up? Do you not listen?!" She scolded, sitting at the edge of the bed.

She had tried to convince her mother the whole night that she wasn’t the least bit interested in going back home. Julian was a foolish old man desperate to believe anything she told him.

Recalling their conversation at breakfast, she grinned at how easily he gave in and promised to compensate her.

Serena replied, "Cassie dear, you have to be patient for just a little while longer, soon you’ll be able to stay with him permanently."

"I just said I don’t want to, if you’re truly my mother you’ll do as I say! Why do I have to wait?!" She snapped, Cassie knew that her position wasn’t solid in stone, yet.

She wanted to stay with Julian and make sure he was convinced she was his...

"Don’t worry, just a bit more and you’ll have everything you want. But, if you don’t believe me, then check the news." Serena told her, sparking Cassie’s interest.

"Why should I-" her question fell to the wind as a notification popped up on her phone...
