Demon Hunter and His Cabin-Chapter 28 - 0 Dispute
Chapter 28: Chapter 028 Dispute
Seeing the haggard look on the red-haired girl’s face, Roger felt somewhat guilty. Last night, he had been so caught up in the excitement of moving to the Hunter’s Cabin that he had completely neglected the fact that someone had been searching for him in the woods all along.
“Sorry…”
Roger had wanted to say more, but Amanda didn’t give him a chance to speak, hugging him tightly with surprising strength.
At this moment, hearing the two of them, several police officers nearby also came over. Roger saw the burly Greg and the relieved-looking Adeline.
“Where on earth did you go? Then, some wild animals appeared in the woods, and in my panic, I lost my way and ended up going further and further away…”
He was better off not having brought it up. Upon hearing Roger’s words, Amanda suddenly burst into tears.
...
The red-haired girl’s unusual behavior left Roger somewhat embarrassed, unsure of what to say to comfort her.
“Roger…”
Amanda choked out.
“Simpson is dead!”
“Betty and I could only watch helplessly as he died right beside us, and there was nothing we could do.”
“What?”
Roger was taken aback.
At the time of the attack, there was no time to look closely, but by all accounts, Simpson’s injuries shouldn’t have been fatal, as long as they made it back to the edge of the woods…
“What happened?”
Roger asked in a deep voice.
“It was Bob!”
Amanda dried her tears.
“Betty and I were supporting Simpson from behind. His injuries were severe, and he relied entirely on us. We didn’t dare to make too much noise in the dark, but by the time we emerged from the woods and returned to the roadside…”
“Bob’s car had already disappeared!”
“Later, we learned that he and Lucy had reached the edge of the woods ahead of us. Those two didn’t care about whether we lived or died; they just got in the car and drove off!”
Amanda clenched her fists tightly, her eyes filled with flames of anger.
At that moment, Adeline stepped forward. She pulled Amanda away and handed Roger a thin blanket, “How are you, did you get injured?”
Amanda also turned her attention to this question, anxiously asking.
“I was fairly lucky; I just took a few tumbles in the mountains.”
Greg gave a thumbs up.
“Like a real man, I’ve got to start looking at you in a new light!”
“It takes a tremendous amount of courage to choose to stay behind in that kind of situation.”
“Alright, no more talking, let’s hurry up and get them back. Roger hasn’t rested all night; he must be exhausted.”
Adeline waved her hand, signaling to Roger. Their task was temporarily completed, but the death of Simpson cast a shadow over everyone’s hearts.
“Weren’t there supposed to be no wild animals on the outskirts of the woods?”
Roger got into Adeline’s car.
“The incident is still under investigation.”
Adeline clearly did not want to talk more about it, “Rest up, the rest is up to us.”
“And you!”
Adeline, suppressing her anger, gave Amanda a glance through the rearview mirror.
“From today, you are grounded!”
Amanda remained silent. After such an incident, she was probably the most affected among them all. Seeing the exhaustion on her daughter’s face, Adeline’s heart softened for a moment.
“Don’t think too much, the matter with Simpson isn’t your fault.”
“You and Betty are both good girls, and Mom is proud of you.”
Amanda still didn’t speak, merely covering her face with both hands and burying her head deeply.
Roger could imagine that scene.
In the pitch-black thicket, two frail girls were dragging Simpson, with the distant sound of wolf howls and Simpson’s painful moans constantly piercing their eardrums.
When they arrived at their departure point full of hope, all they saw was the emptiness after hope had been shattered.
Simpson’s injuries were getting more severe, his breathing weaker and weaker, but there was nothing they could do but watch as he stepped closer to death.
The mere thought of that despair sent shivers down one’s spine.
Adeline gave Roger a look, and he nodded in understanding, “Let’s give her some time first.”
“I am so sorry, Roger.”
“I only wanted to let you… but I didn’t expect this to happen. If something had happened to you, I’d probably never forgive myself for the rest of my life,” Adeline lamented.
On the way back, the three of them were lost in thought, and the atmosphere in the car was so oppressive it felt almost liquid.
After dropping Roger and others off at home, Adeline hurried to the police station, as there was still much to be done.
Once inside the house, Amanda locked herself in her room alone, and Roger also felt weary. He returned to the room Adeline had prepared for him, tidied up simply, then fell straight to sleep.
Meanwhile, in the town, the news of Simpson’s death spread like wildfire, instantly igniting public opinion.
In the following two days, Roger didn’t leave the house. He didn’t even see Amanda again. During this time, a police officer came to take his statement, asking about what had happened that day.
Roger didn’t have anything to hide, and moreover, the rumors about several people gathering in the wilderness for a mysterious ritual spread swiftly.
The police even specifically asked why he had run into the ritual at the last moment to disrupt it.
To this, Roger simply brushed it off as a prank.
In fact, his presence in the whole affair had been greatly minimized. As a stranger, the townspeople didn’t know him well, and the general public was also unaware of the details of the incident.
But it was different for the others.

Aside from Betty, the other four were all born and bred in Baytown residents. Now one was dead, and more importantly, public attention had shifted to another matter.
That was whether Bob and Lucy had actually tried to escape.
According to Bob and Lucy, they indeed had run out of the woods early in panic; however, they didn’t drive away immediately but waited in place for a long time.
During this period, they endured tremendous panic until they hadn’t seen the others for a long while, then they drove back to the town.
Afterward, it was indeed the two of them who called the police.
From this angle, their actions seemed justified. After all, even adults couldn’t remain calm under such circumstances.
However, Amanda couldn’t accept this explanation.
She and Betty, dragging Simpson, indeed weren’t fast, but if Bob and Lucy had waited in place, they couldn’t have missed them.
Lucy even suggested that it was Amanda and Betty who had remembered the meeting place wrongly and didn’t manage to get to the car in time, leading to Simpson’s death.
She and Bob had tried calling Amanda and Betty before departure but couldn’t get through because of the signal.
The two sides stuck to their stories, arguing incessantly, and based on the available evidence, both sides seemed to have a point, making it difficult to come to a conclusion for the time being.
On the third day after the incident, Adeline suddenly sought out Roger, accompanied by a strange woman.
