Chapter 50: Imperial City

Boguto urged the horses forward, and the carriage set off. "If you want to ask me anything, just say the word," he said.

The journey continued, and Flain and Itai didn’t talk much, as there were many topics they couldn’t discuss in Boguto’s presence.

Eventually, night fell, so Boguto lit a fire and took out something resembling sleeping bags. Then he prepared food over the fire, but Flain excused himself, claiming he was undergoing a body purification ritual and couldn’t eat. Boguto looked at him as if he were crazy.

The night passed without incident, though Flain had to pretend to sleep, which was rather boring. However, once Boguto fell asleep, he could do as he pleased. The next day was spent in the carriage, and once again, night came.

Flain slowly got up, certain that Boguto was asleep. After a while, he noticed something deep in the dense forest—a glimmer of many red eyes. Flain moved closer to sense their ME, and upon realizing they were weaker than him, he charged into the forest.

They were wolves, ten of them—large black bodies, long claws, and glowing red eyes piercing through the night. A single thick horn stood atop their heads, like a weapon ready to pierce anything in their path. Flain moved slowly between the trees. The wolves hadn’t noticed him yet.

The first wolf suddenly turned, spotted him, and let out a howl. The entire pack rushed toward him.

Flain grinned and sprinted straight at them.

The first wolf leaped at him, jaws wide open, but Flain gracefully ducked, slashed his sword under its belly, and split it in half. The remaining nine immediately spread out, beginning to encircle him.

Flain halted, observing their movements, waiting.

Two wolves lunged at him simultaneously from the left and right. Flain jumped into the air, soared over them, and, mid-leap, sliced off part of one’s head. He landed, turned, and saw another wolf jumping straight at him.

This time, he chose not to dodge. He waited until the wolf was inches away and, at the last moment, drove his sword upward. The blade pierced through its jaw and into its skull. The wolf collapsed, dead.

The remaining six took him more seriously now. They tightened their formation around him. Flain realized they were relying on their numbers.

One wolf managed to get behind him and slashed his back with its claws.

[-110 HP]

Flain didn’t hesitate, turned, and with a single slash, severed its head from its body.

Two more wolves attacked from the front at the same time. Flain smirked and lunged at them.

He struck the first wolf with an aggressive slash across its entire muzzle, then swiftly turned to the second and sliced through its chest just as precisely.

Suddenly, the eyes of two remaining wolves turned an even deeper red. One pounced onto his shoulder and sank its teeth into his neck.

[-100 HP]

The other slashed his stomach with its claws.

[-85 HP]

Flain quickly turned and swung at the wolf, but it dodged. He immediately retreated a few steps.

One of them lunged forward aggressively. Flain met him head-on, swept his legs out from under him, and ran his sword through his neck.

Another tried to attack from the side, but Flain spun sharply, slicing its head clean off.

The last two wolves stood still, staring at him with intense focus. This was Flain’s opportunity.

"Swift Slash," he whispered.

His sword began to shimmer. Flain lunged at them, unleashing a flurry of attacks. The wolves didn’t last long and collapsed to the ground, dead.

[+30000 EXP]

[+4 Evolution Shards]

Flain looked at their lifeless bodies. Surprisingly, the wolves had managed to injure him. They definitely weren’t all Stage 1, because if they were, he would have handled them without issue. Most were likely Early Stage 2, with some at Peak Stage 1, as there were weaker ones among them. Then he ordered Aran to absorb their souls. He also packed their corpses into two bags—they would be useful for Itai’s army.

Flain waited at the camp until morning before they set off again. By the afternoon, they finally reached the imperial city. Flain was glad they had bought passage by carriage; otherwise, the journey would have taken a week on foot.

When Itai saw the imperial city, his eyes widened in astonishment. The city was at least twenty times larger than the one they had previously been in, and the palace at its center was roughly the same size as that entire city.

What was strange, however, was that there were no walls surrounding the city, meaning anyone could enter without being inspected.

Boguto dropped them off closer to the city. "I hope you enjoyed the journey. Farewell," he said, urged the horses forward, and disappeared.

"We’re finally here," Itai sighed, gazing at the city.

"What’s the plan?" Itai asked.

"First, we should buy a house to live in," Flain said.

"That makes sense. I just hope we have enough money for it," Itai muttered.

They wandered through the city. No one paid them any attention—everyone was busy with their own affairs. Along the streets, there were many stalls, mostly selling food and other everyday items, nothing particularly interesting or useful for warriors.

"Fresh bread! Fresh bread!"

"High-quality shirts! High-quality shirts!"

"Materials of all kinds! Materials of all kinds!" The vendors called out their offers.

Flain also noticed some weapons and armor for sale, but he’d rather buy from a proper shop than from a street stall.

"It’s strange that only humans are here," Itai muttered.

"Explain," Flain said.

"Well, in the kingdom where I lived, there were many intelligent races—half-dragons, elves, dwarves, orcs... But here, I only see humans," Itai said.

’Probably a racist empire,’ Flain thought to himself.

Shortly after, Itai asked a passing traveler where they could buy affordable houses. The passerby said he had a friend in the business and pointed them in the right direction.

They followed the directions and soon arrived at a building with a sign that read: "House Sales."
