Chapter 499: She’s Sucking Them Dry!

Julie was the first to move.

"We need to cut off that blood!" She shouted, already leaping into the air.

Her sword flashed in a blur of silver light as she swung it down with all her strength toward the stream of blood connecting Carmela to the crimson mass still hovering in the sky.

The blade cleaved through the air.

Slice!

But the moment it touched the flowing blood, it was like slicing smoke.

The liquid shimmered, rippling around her blade without resistance, reforming a second later as if nothing had happened.

"What the—?" Julie gasped, already swinging again.

Slice! Slice! Slice!

Again and again, her sword tore through the scarlet stream, but it didn’t even flinch. It was as if her attacks were illusions passing through mist.

"Let me try!" Skadi yelled, jumping towards the sky.

Her claws gleamed with mana, slicing across the flow from the opposite side. Sparks of energy crackled where her strikes landed.

But the blood just hissed and mended itself, pulsing faster, as if mocking her efforts.

Aisha, also tried to cast a disruption spell, slamming her palm against the ground.

A surge of bright light spread beneath Carmela.

But the blood only shimmered brighter in response, almost feeding on the magic.

And through that frustrating moment, Xerath’s broken, twisted laughter echoed across the clearing.

"Hah...Hahahaha!" His voice was hoarse, ragged, but triumphant. "It’s happening! After so long...it’s finally happening!"

He stumbled forward, his single remaining arm raised toward the sky, his blood-slick teeth flashing in a grotesque grin.

"You thought you could stop the ritual! But you’ve only made it better! The blood of the last vampire—the final heir of the ancient progenitor—has awakened!"

Julie’s gaze sharpened. "What are you talking about, you lunatic?"

"The progenitor of the vampire race." Xerath croaked, his voice filled with a sick devotion. "The one who ruled the night long before your pathetic kind ever crawled out of the mud!"

"Her power—the origin of all vampiric bloodlines—flows within that woman’s veins. She was never just a vessel. She was the key! The moment her blood fully awakens, the progenitor’s will shall walk this world once again!"

"He’s saying..." Aisha looked over her shoulder, her expression tight with horror. "...Carmela isn’t the sacrifice like geh rest of the children and people were."

"..she is the ritual."

Skadi’s face paled.

"You mean he’s unlocking the power inside her?"

"Exactly!" Xerath cackled, blood bubbling at the corner of his mouth. "Do you know how many lives this took? How many souls I offered to awaken her blood? Hundreds—hundreds!"

"But it’s all worth it! The ancestor of darkness will rise again! Her power will remake this rotten world!"

"Enough." Aisha took a step forward, her expression cold. "You’re not resurrecting anyone."

But before she could make a move, Carmela suddenly let out a strangled cry.

"SCREEEEEEEECH!!!"

Her body convulsed, every muscle moving at once, as if electricity were coursing through her veins.

The last streams of blood also twisted violently, pouring into her mouth until they were completely gone.

Then, silence.

The swirling crimson energy around her collapsed inward, sucked into her body in an instant and she slowly descended from the air, her feet touching the ground.

For a heartbeat, no one moved.

Then Carmela lifted her head.

Her once brown face was now pale in color, almost glowing under the moonlight.

Her eyes were no longer just crimson as well—they were pure, burning red, so bright they looked almost molten and her hair, once neat, floated gently in the air as if caught in an invisible breeze.

The aura around her was also suffocating like a ancient beast was awakening and the sheer pressure of it made Skadi’s knees buckle slightly as she took an involuntary step back.

"M-Master..." Skadi muttered, her tail lowering instinctively, her instincts screaming danger. "She doesn’t look like she did before...does she?"

Julie raised her sword again. "No." She said quietly, eyes narrowing. "Something’s changed. That isn’t the same Carmela from before."

Cassius on the other hand just squinted at her with a completely unserious expression.

"Really? I don’t really see that much of a difference."

He rubbed his chin thoughtfully, as though inspecting a piece of fine art instead of a feral, possibly world-ending vampire.

"She looks the same to me—crimson eyes, scary face, an aura that makes my skin crawl. That’s just normal Carmela."

"Cassius...are you blind?" Julie slowly turned to him, her voice flat.

"Technically, not anymore." He said with a cheeky grin. "And I think she’s just a little...fired up. Isn’t that right, Carmela?"

He took a bold step forward, smiling as if he could charm her the same way he always did when talking to angry women or demonic creatures.

But the instant his boot touched the ground before her, Carmela snapped her head toward him. Her eyes blazed brighter than molten rubies, and she let out an ear-splitting screech—

"SCREEEEEEEECH!!!"

—an inhuman shriek that shattered the air like glass, which made Cassius freeze mid-step.

"Uh..." He blinked. "...Never mind."

He said before slowly started stepping backward, raising his hands in surrender.

"Yup, she’s definitely got rabies or something. Someone grab a silver muzzle, quickly."

"This is not the time for jokes..." Julie facepalmed, muttering.

But before Cassius could even brace himself as she looked like she was about to attack him—Carmela’s body tensed and her gaze flicked toward movement in the distance where she heard some noise.

From beyond the treeline, the remaining bandits—who’d been too stupid to flee during the ritual—were still lingering, gawking at the chaos.

One of them, a scruffy man with a crooked nose and half-rotted teeth, blinked as he pointed toward Carmela.

"The hell—what’s wrong with that lady?!" He yelled. "She’s screamin’ like a banshee!"

Another bandit swore loudly, panic creeping into his tone.

"I told you we shouldn’t have come here! This ain’t no treasure hunt—this is cursed shit!"

But before they could retreat, Carmela’s head snapped toward them, her neck turning at an unnatural, bone-cracking angle.

Her glowing red eyes locked onto them.

Cassius frowned, immediately realizing what was about to happen. "Oh no."

"Oh yes." Julie muttered grimly.

Then Carmela moved.

One moment she was standing there, still and silent.

The next—she was gone.

A blur of red light streaked across the battlefield, faster than anyone could track and a gust of wind followed her motion, carrying the faint stench of blood.

The first bandit didn’t even have time to scream.

There was only a wet crunch as Carmela appeared in front of him, her hand plunging straight through his chest.

Squelch!

She tore his heart out in one move—and before his body could hit the ground, she sank her fangs into his neck, drinking deeply.

"WHAT THE FUCK—!" Another bandit screamed, turning to run.

But she was already there.

Carmela’s movements were almost spectral, fluid, graceful, horrifyingly efficient. She grabbed the man by the throat, lifted him effortlessly off the ground, and bit deep into the side of his neck.

Quelch!

The sound of flesh tearing echoed through the clearing. His body convulsed for a few seconds before going completely limp, and she dropped him like garbage.

Blood smeared her lips, her pale face glowing faintly red in the moonlight.

"Holy shit, she’s actually drinking them!" One of the remaining bandits cried. "She’s—she’s sucking the blood outta them like—like—"

Like a vampire.

But none of them got to finish their thoughts.

Carmela’s head tilted, her blood-soaked mouth curling into something between a snarl and a grin and seeing this, the remaining men bolted in every direction, screaming in terror, tripping over each other in their panic.

"RUN! RUN, GODS DAMN IT!"

"SHE’S A MONSTER! A DEMON!"

"FORGET THE WOMEN, FORGET WHATEVER WE CAME HERE FOR—SAVE YOURSELVES!"

But it was far, far too late.

Carmela descended on them like a crimson storm.

She darted between trees and shadows with impossible speed, her movements almost beautiful in their brutality.

One by one, she caught each fleeing bandit—tearing open throats, crushing ribcages, and ripping arteries with her claws and teeth.

Each time she bit, a horrible slurping sound echoed, and the bodies shriveled like dried husks—completely drained of blood.

Not a drop was wasted.

Meanwhile, Julie, Aisha, Skadi, and Cassius could only watch, their expressions frozen between awe and horror.

Julie kept her guard up as her eyes darted helplessly, barely able to follow Carmela’s movements.

"Gods...she’s slaughtering them."

"I-I can’t even see her, Captain." Skadi took an uneasy step back, her earlier eagerness gone. "It’s like she’s everywhere at once!"

"She’s draining them dry." Aisha whispered. "Every single one of them..."

But no matter what they thought, Carmela didn’t stop.

She was drenched in red now, her skin gleaming with the blood of her victims. Her eyes glowed like miniature suns, burning with an ancient hunger that wasn’t entirely her own.

And when the last bandit fell, she stood still amid the carnage—surrounded by a field of broken, bloodless corpses.

Her chest rose and fell slowly, her mouth stained crimson.

And then...

She turned her head and her gaze locked back onto Cassius.

And before Cassius could so much as say a word—she moved.

She lunged.

It wasn’t just fast—it was instantaneous.

One moment she was standing several meters away, blood dripping from her fingertips. The next, she was a crimson blur, rushing straight toward him with her claws extended and her fangs glinting under the moonlight.

But Cassius didn’t move.

He didn’t even flinch.

It wasn’t because he was frozen in fear—no, Cassius had faced far worse things.

It was because before he could even react, they did.

Julie, Aisha, and Skadi—all three of them—moved at once.

Julie was the first, her instincts sharper than thought itself. Her sword came up in a flash, intercepting Carmela mid-lunge.

Bang!

Steel met flesh with a sound that sent shockwaves through the air, and for a heartbeat, the two were locked.

But the moment was brief—too brief.

Boom!

A shockwave exploded outward, the sheer force of the impact tearing through the ground. Julie was flung back like a ragdoll, her feet digging furrows into the dirt as she slid dozens of meters away before finally managing to stop.

Her arm trembled, her wrist screaming in pain.

"She’s...strong." She hissed, her voice tight. "Too strong!"

"Captain!" Aisha called, already rushing in to cover her, slamming her palms into the ground. "Terra Spira!"

Boom! Boom! Boom!

The earth beneath Carmela exploded upward into a twisting spiral of rock, closing around her like the jaws of a serpent.

But before the spell could fully take shape, Carmela’s eyes glowed brighter.

And then—crack!

The rock shattered into dust as she simply slapped them away.

And the next instant, she was behind Aisha.

Aisha barely had time to react before Carmela’s claws slashed across her defensive barrier, sending debris of earth flying.

Boom!

The impact was so violent it threw her several steps back, the wind completely knocked out of her lungs.

"Dammit!" Aisha coughed, summoning another layer of stone between them. "She’s tearing through my magic!"

"You picked the wrong fight, bloodsucker!" Skadi roared, her tail bristling, eyes blazing.

In a blur of motion, she leapt forward, her claws igniting with shimmering blue aura as she met Carmela head-on.

Boom!

The two collided with an ear-splitting boom that sent shockwaves across the field, before Skadi started punching at full power.

Boom! Boom! Boom!

Each of her punches was fast and precise, strong enough to crush steel, but Carmela deflected every blow with one hand, barely looking like she was even trying.

Skadi thensnarled, ducking under a claw strike and delivering a fierce kick to Carmela’s ribs.

Kick!

The blow connected. But instead of sending her flying, Carmela merely turned her head toward her attacker.

Her lips curled back, exposing her glistening fangs.

Then she smiled.

"—Oh, crap." Skadi muttered as she watched Carmela’s hand shoot out, trying to seize her throat.

"Skadi! Down!" Aisha moved then, her voice sharp as a whip.

Skadi barely ducked as a boulder was sent from Aisha searing through the air and smashed into Carmela.

Boom!

The explosion sent dirt and stone flying, carving a massive crater into the earth.

Julie also came back into the fray, her sword slashing down in a brilliant arc to top it off knowing that attack won’t be enough.

"Carmela! Snap out of it!"

But her blade met Carmela’s claws again who was completed alright even after a massive rock was flung at her, and sparks flew as steel and supernatural flesh collided.

But it was no use. She simply grabbed onto her sword and threw Julie back.

Every time they struck, it was like hitting a mountain.

Carmela wasn’t blocking or evading with technique—she didn’t need to.

Her raw strength alone made every attack meaningless.

She swatted Julie’s sword aside with one hand, kicked Skadi back into a tree, and shattered Aisha’s defensive walls as if they were made of paper.

She was unstoppable even with some of the strongest warriors on the continent, showing just how powerful progenitor vampires of the past were and how much of a different world it would be if they still existed.
