Chapter 642: He’s A Medical Genius!

Maria leaned back into her chair, a fond smile playing at her lips as she looked at Diana across the table.

"You know, I really have to say..." Maria began warmly. "...your skills have improved quite a lot."

Diana looked up from her tea, curiosity flickering in her eyes.

"I saw the way your hands moved in that operation theater." Maria continued. "How swift you were, how you never hesitated even for a moment."

"I’ve always been thoroughly impressed by what a good doctor you are—but watching you today?"

She shook her head in admiration.

"I felt that if I ever took a dagger through the heart, I wouldn’t have to worry at all. My best friend would be right by my side and would most definitely save me."

Diana’s expression shifted from curiosity to genuine horror.

"Oh, Maria, please don’t do something like that!"

She exclaimed, her voice urgent.

"I beg of you! Taking a knife out of a heart is something even I’m not confident in!"

Maria blinked at her friend’s genuine distress, then burst out laughing.

"Oh come on, Diana! Do you really think I would actually do something like that?" She waved a hand dismissively. "Why do you look actually scared?"

Diana’s eyes narrowed.

"Because you would do something like that!" She shot back.

"You’re Maria! You’re someone who would put so much trust in your friends that you wouldn’t even mind stabbing yourself just to prove a point!"

"You’re such a selfless person—it’s actually quite scary to think of you doing something like that!"

She paused, her gaze drifting down to Maria’s chest.

Then she blushed.

"And..." She added quickly, looking away. "I should also mention that doing surgery on a heart with someone who has such a...such a big chest as yours would be rather difficult for me."

"I’d rather not attempt it with such a massive obstruction in front of me."

"Diana!" Maria gasped, looking offended. "How could you say something like that?!"

She looked down at her own chest, then back up at Diana.

"It’s not that big! It wouldn’t cause such a massive obstruction during surgery!"

She then glanced pointedly at Diana’s own figure.

"And you of all people shouldn’t be saying that! You have quite a plump rack yourself!"

Diana’s face turned crimson.

"Maria!"

"All that milk that should have gone to Vivi as a baby..." Maria continued mercilessly, a teasing grin spreading across her face. "...maybe it didn’t go to her at all. Maybe you saved it all up inside."

"Y-You! You’re a sister!" Diana sputtered, utterly flustered. "How could you say something like that?!"

Maria simply smiled, her expression teasing and warm.

Diana shook her head, but she couldn’t help smiling too.

It was strange, she thought. Normally, she would never say such teasing remarks to anyone.

She came from a noble household, after all. She was raised to be reserved, elegant, the epitome of peace and quiet grace.

Every word she spoke was measured, every gesture calculated to maintain proper decorum.

But with Maria?

Something else came out.

A mischievousness she didn’t even know she possessed.

A playfulness that had no place in her normal life.

With Maria, she didn’t need to worry about anyone scowling at her or looking at her strangely. She could just...open up. Be herself. Say ridiculous things without fear of judgment.

And Maria felt the same way.

Not about being mischievous—Maria was naturally outgoing and never held back her personality anyway.

But with Diana, she could share her darkest secrets. Her deepest insecurities. The struggles she would never tell Joy about, because she didn’t want her daughter to worry.

And every time she opened up, she felt so much better. So much lighter. Like the weight she carried wasn’t quite so heavy when shared between two people.

Maria felt a surge of gratitude wash over her.

How lucky she was to have a friend like Diana.

How lucky they both were.

Then a thought struck her.

She leaned forward with curiosity, setting her teacup down on the table.

"Say, Diana." She said, her tone shifting to genuine interest. "Can you tell me more about all the new devices I’ve been seeing in the hospital recently?"

Diana also set down her teacup, giving Maria her full attention.

"The last time I was here." Maria continued. "You were all using the same old technology—the same medical devices I trained with. I fully expected to see the same things when I came back this time."

"But to my utter surprise..." She shook her head slowly. "...in every single ward I went through, there were new devices everywhere. New medical apparatus that I’ve never seen before."

"And they weren’t simple creations either—they were all quite complicated. I could tell just by looking at them that they’ve changed the face of healing here. Optimized treatments, faster recovery times..."

She gestured vaguely, searching for words.

"I mean, I’m not a complete doctor myself, but even I was shocked by what I saw. Those devices were truly life-changing. I never expected to see such advances in such a short time since my last visit."

She paused, a slightly embarrassed expression crossing her face.

"Honestly, I was overwhelmed even in the operation theater."

"You were using different devices than I remembered. And when you called out the names of those tools, I had no idea what to do. I could only let those younger nurses help you instead."

She laughed sheepishly.

"It was rather embarrassing for someone who’s supposed to be your trained assistant."

"So where exactly did those come from?"

She leaned forward more intently.

"It’s natural to get a new device or two every year, but this many at once? And so many new techniques I’ve never even heard of?"

She shook her head.

"It’s rather strange. Did the Empress give you some sort of special fund for medical innovation?"

Diana smiled warmly.

"The Empress did actually give us such a fund years ago." She confirmed.

"And it was spent wisely. We created several new techniques specifically for medical use, and also developed one quite significant device for treating lung conditions."

She paused, tapping her fingers against her desk in. Contemplation.

"But even with that budget, only those few things could be accomplished. Medical innovation is expensive, and progress is slow."

Maria tilted her head. "Then where did all these new changes come from?"

Diana’s smile widened.

"Well, that would be because of Cassius, I suppose."

Maria’s brain stuttered.

"Cassius?" She repeated.

The name alone sent an unexpected warmth flooding through her. She felt heat creep up her neck, touching her cheeks, and she had no idea why.

It was just a name. Why would mentioning him make her feel suddenly shy?

She quickly shook herself internally, forcing the warmth down, hoping Diana hadn’t noticed her momentary fluster.

"Cassius?" She said again, trying to sound casual. "What exactly does Cassius have to do with this?"

"Did he give you some sort of special fund for doctors? Did he invest in the hospital or something?"

Diana actually chuckled, a warm, genuine sound that filled the small office.

"No, no, no, Maria." She said, shaking her head. "You’re thinking too small. Cassius didn’t do something as simple as just investing."

Maria keenly listened to what she had to say.

"I mean sure, he invested."

Diana continued, waving her hand casually.

"He’s most definitely the biggest investor this hospital has ever seen. He shoved such a boatload of money at us that I honestly have too much budget right now."

"It’s a wonderful problem to have, but still—it’s almost overwhelming."

She stopped, and her expression shifted.

The amusement faded, replaced by something else—a genuine look of admiration, as if she were speaking about someone she truly looked up to.

"But that’s not even the biggest thing he’s done for this hospital." Diana said softly. "The truth is, Maria..."

"...he created all of these inventions himself."

Maria’s face went blank.

"What?"

Diana nodded fervently, leaning forward with the enthusiasm of someone talking about their greatest idol.

"Not only did he create all of these amazing devices and apparatuses himself—the ones that have literally helped save lives that would have been lost otherwise."

"But he also designed them for every single department. Each one tailored to specific needs, specific procedures, specific challenges that we doctors have been struggling with for decades."

Maria’s mouth opened, but no words came out.

"And that’s not all." Diana continued, her voice filled with wonder. "He gave all the rights and patents to me."

"The devices, the instructions on how to make them—he just handed it all over. Then he made sure they were distributed to every major hospital across the continent."

"And as for the hospitals in distant places, poor places that couldn’t afford to replicate the machines—he actually manufactured the devices himself and sent them. Free of charge."

She shook her head in amazement.

"Right now, there’s a special distribution site and factory dedicated solely to producing medical devices, all funded and operated by him."

"It’s...it’s unprecedented."

Maria stared at her in wonder and disbelief and was utterly speechless.

"Are you—" She had to stop and swallow. "Are you serious? He was the one who did all of this? H-He created all of these things?"

"Yes." Diana simply nodded before innocently asking, "But, why do you seem so surprised, Maria? Is it that surprising?"

"Of course I’m surprised, Diana!" Maria sputtered.

"You just said a moment ago that medical progression takes time! That it takes years for a single device to be developed and tested and approved!"

"Now you’re suddenly telling me that all of these devices were made by Cassius? In what, a few months?"

"Does that not seem strange to you?!"

She gestured wildly at the room around them, at the hospital beyond its walls, at all the innovation she had witnessed.

"You’re acting as if it’s nothing at all, as if it’s such a simple thing, when it’s obviously a massive, world-changing deal!"

"And you’re saying it so casually, like—like—"

Diana chuckled again, waving her hand dismissively.

"Maria, oh Maria—if it were anyone else, even I would be shocked. But the one who created all of this is Cassius. And if it’s him, it’s nothing at all."

Maria blinked. "Nothing at all?"

"Nothing at all." Diana confirmed. "He is someone so skilled that you can’t even comprehend it. His intelligence, his knowledge, his capabilities—they’re on a level that no one can really reach."

"When it comes to him, no matter what he does or what he creates, you shouldn’t be surprised."

"And honestly, I was just like you at first." She smiled gently. "I was shocked every single time. But nowadays? I’ve gotten used to it. It doesn’t even bother me anymore."

"That’s probably why I’m reacting so casually."

But even though she heard this, Maria still couldn’t comprehend it.

Her mind was struggling, grasping at straws, trying to fit this new information into the box where she kept her understanding of Cassius.

But it didn’t fit. It was too big, too massive, too impossible.

She then leaned forward, her voice dropping to almost a whisper, as if she were asking about some great secret.

"So...really? It’s really true? Cassius was the one who created all of this?"

"Yes, my dear." Diana nodded firmly, her expression patient but certain. "No matter how many times you ask me, no matter what way you ask me, I’m going to give you the same answer."

"He’s the one who created all of this."

She leaned back, her expression thoughtful as she added,

"And not just the medical apparatuses, Maria. You should have seen the different techniques that have emerged. The new cures, the new medicines, well..."

"...he created all of that too."

Maria’s eyes widened.

"Do you remember that medical journal that was released around two months ago?" Diana asked.

"The one with all the array new medicines and treatments?"

"Of course. How could I not know about it?"

Maria nodded fervently.

"Normally, that journal features accomplishments from doctors all over the region, but for that month alone, it was all your accomplishments. Everything from your hospital."

She had a look of awe on her face as she said,

"For some reason, in that single month, you had created so many new medicines and cures and techniques that the entire journal was dedicated to you."

She pulled back like she still couldn’t that such a incident occured..

"I was so shocked while reading it that I couldn’t even believe it. I wrote you a bunch of letters about it!"

Diana smiled gently.

"Well, to tell you the truth...it wasn’t me who did all of that."

Maria gasped.

"It was mostly Cassius." Diana finished.

The words hung in the air between them.

"He didn’t want his name spread around." Diana explained. "For some reason, when it comes to him, he doesn’t like to attach his name to good deeds."

"So whenever he does anything positive, he does it through his family. He lets them take the credit, as if they were the ones who did it."

She shook her head, a mixture of admiration and confusion in her expression.

"It’s almost as if he doesn’t want a good reputation at all. He’d rather keep the bad one he already has."

She sighed softly.

"So even though those accomplishments were published under my name, they were most definitely all his creations. His techniques. His innovations."

She held up a hand.

"Oh, I assisted in creating some of the medicines—doing the labor, the testing, the implementation."

"But the ideas? The breakthroughs? Those were all him."

Her eyes shone with genuine admiration.

"He’s simply a genius when it comes to medicine."

She paused, considering her words.

"No, not a genius. I don’t think there’s even a word that exists to describe what he is, or what he’s done for the medical industry."

"But I will say this—he, and he alone, with the ideas he has brought forward, has advanced medical science by at least a few hundred years."
