Chapter 123: Luke’s Devastation

Four days of agony had passed with no news of Ravenna or Zander. After safely sending little Riven back to Vetheris, Alaric had decided to return and find his wife. But something happened—or rather, Nyx happened.

A day after arriving in Vetheris, Nyx vanished along with Finn’s corpse, creating even greater chaos than there already was. Alaric could already guess what she was up to. On their way back, she had incoherently kept mumbling that she could bring Finn back to life, but no one paid her any attention, thinking she was just devastated by Finn’s death. Thinking about it now, Alaric wasn’t sure if such a thing was even possible. And if it was, then something significant would surely have to be sacrificed.

"The three of you will remain here," Alaric said, addressing Luke, Zeke, and Seth. "Take care of Riven. I’ll go get my wife."

"I’m coming with you," Luke said firmly, leaving no room for argument.

But Alaric’s mind was made up, and not even Luke could convince him otherwise.

"No. I need you here. I don’t trust anyone else with my child except you three."

Luke opened his mouth to insist, but Zeke placed a hand on his shoulder. "He’ll bring our sister back. Trust him. And... our nephew needs us."

Alaric glanced at little Riven, who was sleeping peacefully in Seth’s arms.

"It’s not that I don’t trust him, I—"

Alaric interrupted Luke. "Please. Zander is out there, and he’s enough help, alright?"

Luke silently looked at Alaric for a long moment before speaking in a low voice. "You’re afraid we might end up like Finn, aren’t you?"

And he was right. Though Alaric tried hard to mask his feelings, whatever Luke said cut deep. He looked away, gritting his teeth, as centuries-old memories flooded in unannounced. Every battle they had fought and won together, every argument, every smile and joke—they were all gone now, lost with Finn.

Tears welled in his eyes, and he raked his fingers through his hair aggressively, as though the pain might somehow be released through the motion, as though he could claw out the hollow left in his heart.

"I’ll leave now," he announced finally, and left the room with long, determined strides.

Luke started to follow him, but Zeke held him back by gripping his forearm.

"He’s grieving, so don’t push it."

Luke pulled away sharply with a glare. "And so are we. That’s all the more reason I have to go with him. Ravenna... that bastard has her, and if he manages to capture Alaric too, then—"

"Calm down first, Luke," Zeke said, reaching for his shoulder again.

"Don’t tell me to calm down, damn it! What if he makes Alaric kill her? Then what? Should I just sit my ass here and wait? If you don’t give a fuck, then don’t stop me!" Luke’s voice cracked as rage surged through him. He seemed to completely lose control whenever he thought about Liam having their sister. He had once experienced the pain of losing her, and the thought of it happening again felt like being thrown into hell itself. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝔀𝓮𝒃𝙣𝓸𝒗𝒆𝒍.𝙘𝒐𝒎

Zeke felt a surge of irritation at Luke’s words, but he understood him. He was worried too. Yet he knew deep down that Liam’s intentions were not to harm Ravenna. That, at least, kept him sane—and so did the knowledge that Lycan King Darius was no longer a threat to them.

"Will you calm down, man?" Zeke pleaded.

Luke paced back and forth, breathing heavily. To people who barely knew him, he might appear to be the most calm and reasonable brother among the three. But to Zeke and Seth, they knew the truth: he was the worst when he was mad—and right now, he was beyond mad.

"I’ll kill him. I’ll kill that bastard." Luke chanted the words over and over like a madman. He truly seemed to have snapped, and only bloodshed would soothe his fury.

Seth, who had been silent until now, gently laid Riven in his crib before walking toward his brothers. With a sigh, he stood in front of Luke and placed both hands on his shoulders.

"We understand how you feel. But you need to calm down and think rationally. Liam wouldn’t have kidnapped our sister if he meant to kill her. We all know what he wants," Seth said, his tone reasonable and steady.

Sense seemed to snap back into Luke, and he nodded slowly. "Yes... you’re right. He won’t harm her. She’ll be fine. She’ll be okay, right?" With every word, his eyes grew wet with unshed tears.

"Yes, she’ll be okay," Seth whispered, pulling him into a hug.

Luke nodded against his shoulder. "But he still killed... Finn. That’s even more reason to kill him. If I come face-to-face with that bastard—"

"I know. We’ll kill him together." Seth hugged him tighter as silent tears filled his eyes at the thought of Finn. "He’ll die for sure."

Zeke, who stood beside them, wiped away escaping tears before stepping forward and wrapping his arms around both of them. "Don’t you dare leave me out."

The trio clung together, weeping soundlessly in remembrance of Finn, until Riven’s sudden, loud cry startled them.

"He also doesn’t want to be left out," Luke said, attempting a joke, though his voice cracked. The three of them chuckled softly at Luke’s unfunny attempt before walking over to little Riven.

"Let me out!" Ravenna screamed, pounding on the metallic door.

She had tried to break it down before, but she had been injected with wolfsbane. Though it wasn’t fatal, it had sapped her strength until even a simple act like banging on the door exhausted her. The helplessness frustrated her deeply.

Sliding down to sit against the door, she found herself staring yet again at the same nightmare she’d been trapped with for what felt like an eternity. All around her were countless photos of herself plastered on the walls. The screens in the room played video after video of her, recordings from nearly three years ago, dating back to when she had been ousted from the Silver Pack.

Drawing her knees up to her chest, she buried her face against them, tears flowing silently. She had no one to blame but herself. Everything that had happened was her fault. She had endangered everyone’s lives—especially her own child’s. She only prayed that everyone else was safe.

Unbeknownst to her, her favorite person, Finn, was gone. And the man who had killed him was the same man she had fought with her husband to save.
