Chapter 128: Blue Light

Riven’s POV

I had no idea what I would’ve done if it weren’t for both my uncles holding me back.

"Let me go," I said in a strained voice.

Never before had I been consumed by anger like this—to the point where I couldn’t think straight. All I wanted was to tear that man apart for daring to touch what was mine. I didn’t know where this sudden sense of possessiveness came from, but I knew it had to be the mate bond.

But I had one pressing question: why was I the only one feeling it?

The woman hadn’t even turned around, not once, even with me standing so close to her.

As if reading my thoughts, Uncle Zeke said, "She’s human."

That didn’t make me feel any better. In fact, all the excitement from earlier vanished in an instant. I turned slowly toward Uncle Zeke with a confused expression, and he simply nodded, then shifted his gaze back to the woman still wrapped in another man’s arms.

How had I missed it? She was indeed human. Her heartbeat said it all.

"How is that possible? A human mate?" I had never heard of such a thing. I only knew that shifters were mated to other shifters, or hybrids at most. My father, a hybrid, was mated to my mother, and so am I. But this? Never, not even in my wildest imagination, had I considered the possibility of a human mate.

"It’s rare for a shifter to be fated to a human," Uncle Seth explained as we all looked at the woman, "but it’s not impossible."

"I can’t accept her. She’s... too weak to handle me," I whispered the last part.

I knew my condition all too well and that’s why I said that. On full moon nights, I had to stay locked indoors. If even the faintest sliver of moonlight touched me, I would lose control, go on a rampage, destroying everything in sight. Worst-case scenario? I could kill anyone who tried to stop me. Aunt Nyx had said no one really understood why it happened. The only thing they knew was that I had to find my mate before I turned twenty-five, or else marry a strong she-wolf. Supposedly, nature would take its course from there. She’d also mentioned that my condition would worsen as my twenty-fifth birthday approached and could manifest anywhere, at any time.

So naturally, I thought my mate would be someone strong. But now, to discover she was human?

"We’ll have to talk to everyone about this," Uncle Zeke muttered.

"No." The word flew out before I could stop it. "I mean, not now. Do you want to see me shoved onto an altar with a human bride? If not, no one says a word to Aunt Nyx."

I hoped they’d understand. I knew my aunt too well. If she found out I had met my mate, she wouldn’t hesitate to force me into a marriage—even if it meant kidnapping the girl.

"We wouldn’t mind if it meant you’d be cured," Uncle Seth said with annoying nonchalance.

"But she’s human. She’s not supposed to know about our world. And besides," I added darkly, glaring at the man still holding her, "she already has... someone."

"It seems you’re missing the point. It’s either your mate—or Alexis," Uncle Zeke reminded me.

That struck a nerve. It was her or Alexis. And heaven knows I’d rather stab to death than myself than marry that self-righteous, annoying bitch.

"Let’s get out of here before I kill someone."

I didn’t wait for their response. I strode out of the club, confusion trailing me like a shadow.

How the hell was I supposed to get myself out of this? From the looks of it, my so-called mate and that man had a deep relationship. I couldn’t just snatch her away from her partner... right?

Or maybe... I could.

Ugh!

I turned back into the club and joined Uncle Zeke and Uncle Seth, who had already made themselves comfortable at a table upstairs. From where we sat, I could see the soft outline of the woman’s curves. My mood soured further. That man was still holding her

Tessa’s POV

"Tess, don’t you think we should leave?" My idiotic friend’s voice rang above my head.

"Not yet!" I snapped, glaring at him. "Charlie is still watching."

Charlie. That name had been the cause of all miseries and happiness in my life. Despite knowing the person whom he wanted was none other than Ember, my dad’s other daughter with his mistress, I still couldn’t bring myself to let go.

Since high school, Charlie had been the only guy I was ever interested in and I had been chasing him relentlessly. We used to be close, quite close that I thought he shared the same feelings as me, only to discover he only did so in order to get to Ember through me.

That hurt my pride but my ego was too high to just let Ember win like that. And so, I have been after Charlie for now five years. The man knew about it and had already drawn boundaries and said he would never have those kind of feelings for me, but me being Tessa, I had told him:

"Never say never. I’ll make you, Charlie West, fall in love with me no matter how long it takes."

That was three years ago when I uttered those words and still, I had not made any progress.

At the moment, Jay, my idiotic friend, and I were in Blue Light club, Charlie’s favourite club. I had dragged Jay here because as of the time, I was on a quest to test if Charlie had even the slightest feelings for me.

"Tess, my legs are already numb from standing." Jay leaned his chin on my shoulder.

"Why are you complaining when I’m the one wearing heels?" I said, followed by scowl, when he almost dumped his entire weight on my fragile sexy body. "Alright, let’s take a five minute break."

Jay and I walked to our table.

"I don’t want to be your buddy anymore. This is pure torture."

The only thing this man knew was how to complain. I scoffed quickly downing a glass of liquor.

"Do you think Charlie is jealous? I swear I could see him sneaking glances at us when we were dancing." I was not lying. The man would look at use once in a while and then fast look away as if he was afraid of being caught.

"Or maybe it’s your imagination running wild again. Until when will you chase..."

"Excuse me?" A deep voice interrupted our conversation.

I raised my head to check who it was. "Yes?" The neon lights traced the man’s figure, his fine features well outlined.

"May I have a dance with you?" The smile tagging on his lips was deadly intoxicating.

Unfortunately, my heart was not willing to open up to any other man even the little bit. So, my answer was an absolute no.

I was just about to refuse when Jay kicked me under the table.

"What the..."

Jay didn’t have to say much, only a simple gesture pointing towards Charlie made me understand what he meant. This was a great opportunity to see if Charlie would react when he saw me with another man.
