Devourer's Legacy: I Regressed With The Primordial Crest-Chapter 21: Askeladd (1)
Chapter 21 - Askeladd (1)
'This must be a joke!'
Zain stood at the edge of the arena, his sword raised in a proper stance as he faced Kasim. His heart pounded against his chest, making him question his own sanity.
Everyone in Draemir knew Kasim as the Lord Agusthus' Shadow. A warrior who stood at the doorstep of transcendence. And here was Zain, expected to face him in combat. It was like pitting a wolf cub against a seasoned predator.
When the overseer signaled the start, Zain's muscles tensed. His eyes darted across the arena, trying to track his opponent. But Kasim had already vanished from his spot.
'Fuck!'
Zain raised his guard, his knuckles white around the sword's grip. Unlike others blessed with special abilities, he had nothing but his sword and instincts to rely on. And right now, both were screaming at him to survive.
A whistle cut through the air behind his head. Zain spun, his sword meeting Kasim's dagger with a sharp clash of metal. A small smile crossed his lips as he searched for his opponent, but Kasim had melted into the shadows once again.
Trusting his instincts, Zain whirled around. But this time, he was too slow. The dagger came from behind, and though he tried to dodge, he could only watch helplessly as it grazed his hair.
A chill ran down his spine as realization struck - Kasim had pulled back at the last moment. The message was clear.
"You're at my mercy."
Most would surrender, accepting the gap in their skills. But Zain wasn't most people. While he usually preferred staying in the background, once committed, he never backed down.
Taking a deep breath, Zain closed his eyes. If he couldn't see Kasim anyway, why not trust his other senses?
The next attack came head-on. This time, Zain sensed the cold iron approaching. Though he detected it, Kasim's speed was overwhelming. The dagger pierced his armor but stopped short of his skin.
'Shit!'
But this time, fear had transformed into excitement. His body tingled with a new awareness. He could sense it - the deadly dance of Kasim's dagger through the air. Perhaps he wasn't as helpless as he thought.
Zain kept his eyes closed. The world around him sharpened - the whisper of footsteps, the subtle shift in the air, the cold presence of steel.
Another attack came. This time from his left.
Zain pivoted, raising his sword just in time to deflect the dagger. The clash of metal rang sweeter than any music he'd heard. He might be outmatched, but he wasn't helpless anymore.
'I can do this!'
His excitement was short-lived. Kasim's attacks suddenly doubled in speed. Daggers seemed to come from everywhere at once - left, right, above, behind. Though Zain could sense them now, his body simply couldn't keep up.
A sharp pain exploded in his right shoulder as a dagger slipped past his guard. Before he could recover, another strike knocked his sword away. The final blow came to his chest, sending him sprawling onto the arena floor.
"Match concluded!&" the overseer's voice boomed.
"Winner: Kasim!"
Zain lay there, staring at the sky with a grin plastered across his face. His body ached, but his heart was soaring. He'd lost - badly at that - but he'd discovered something far more valuable than victory.
"You've got good instincts,"
Kasim's deep voice came from beside him. "With proper training, you might actually become dangerous."
Zain sat up, wincing at his injuries but unable to contain his smile.
He'd been thoroughly defeated, yet he felt like he'd won something precious. For the first time, he'd glimpsed the realm of true warriors - and though the gap was vast, at least now he could see the path forward.
'Just you wait,' he thought, watching Kasim's retreating back. 'Next time, I'll do more than just sense your attacks.'
His body might have lost the battle, but his spirit had never felt more alive.

Renard couldn't contain his smile as he watched the match conclude. Though Zain had been thoroughly defeated by Kasim, his young master's eyes sparkled with excitement.
"...You are strange,&" Aria muttered, glancing sideways at her brother. She couldn't understand why he seemed so delighted at his guard's defeat.
"Defeat teaches more than victories, my sunshine!" Lord Agusthus commented, having overheard his granddaughter's words. His eyes held a knowing glint as he observed Renard's reaction.
The aged lord understood exactly what had captured Renard's attention. In those final moments, Zain had achieved something remarkable - he'd managed to predict Kasim's movements. To most observers, this might seem trivial, but Lord Agusthus knew better.
The gap between Kasim, who stood at the threshold of transcendence, and Zain, who had barely reached the peak of the essence realm, was like the distance between heaven and earth. Yet somehow, that young knight had managed to perceive Kasim's movements, if only for a brief moment.

But what truly caught Lord Agusthus' attention was his grandson. Throughout the match, he'd been secretly observing Renard, and what he saw left him stunned. The boy's insights into the battle far exceeded what any child his age should possess.
Most children would see only the surface - the clash of weapons, the dramatic movements, the eventual victory or defeat. But Renard had perceived deeper. He understood that Zain's defeat held more value than a hollow victory would have, showing a level of wisdom that seemed almost unnatural for his age.
The more Lord Agusthus watched his grandson, the more questions arose in his mind. There was something different about the boy, something he couldn't quite put his finger on. It both intrigued and unsettled him, leaving him uncertain how to proceed.
His contemplation was interrupted by the announcement of the next match. The arena herald's voice boomed across the grounds, declaring the upcoming battle between the wandering warrior Jin and Askeladd, the Warrior of Valor.
Lord Agusthus cast one final glance at his grandson, whose eyes were already fixed on the arena with keen interest.
'What has caused this change,' he wondered silently, before turning his attention to the new combatants taking their positions.
