Chapter 82: Hotel Drama (1)

The hotel Jack and Miranda were staying at had both regular and valet parking. He assumed that anyone that could afford a Maybach would normally use valet parking, but Jack only had the one key fob. And he was not willing to hand over his one and only key to his brand new baby.

So, he parked it in the regular underground parking garage.

When he checked in, they asked for his license plate number so that his car would not get towed if he used regular parking. So, after he got out, he made a note of the plate number of his new Maybach, then headed to the registration desk to add the car to his account.

There were two people standing behind the registration desk. A young woman and man, both in hotel uniforms.

As he approached, the man whose name tag read "Derik" asked, "How can I help you?"

"I just acquired a new car and I want to add it to my account so it doesn’t get towed."

"Certainly sir, may I see your ID so I can look up your account?"

Jack fished out his ID card and handed it to the man.

While Derik typed away on the keyboard of his terminal, Jack grabbed a piece of paper from a convenient notepad and wrote down the Maybach’s plate number.

"Ah, Mr. Waldron, I see you are staying in one of our suits. What plate number would you like to add?"

Jack handed him the piece of paper with the Maybach’s plate number on it.

Derik took the paper and started typing, then stopped, scowling.

"There’s seems to be a problem with this terminal. One moment, please." Then Derik turned and walked through a door behind the counter.

While he waited, Jack started typing out an e-mail to Henry, letting him know about winning the Maybach and to expect to be contacted by Greg’s lawyers. He was almost finished typing when he felt a looming presence approach.

He turned and noticed three security guards standing behind him, and behind them was Derik, smirking.

One of the security guards said, "Remain where you are until the police can come get you."

Say what?

This was one of the nicest hotels in the area, so it was possible Greg was staying there as well. And if he was, then the plate number Jack gave Derik would show as already registered to another account.

All the little shit had to do was ask, and Jack could have shown him the note from Greg. But no, the little weasel had to call the cops and act like Jack was a common thief.

He was paying for a suite, for fuck’s sake, and those were not cheap. There was no reason for the receptionist to treat him like this.

Jack felt his jaw clench as he tried to remain calm.

"What’s this all about?" Jack asked, trying to suppress his growing anger.

"Just remain where you are," growled one of the guards.

Jack called Henry while the guards watched. He was going to need a lawyer for this bullshit.

When Henry answered, he said, "Jack? Is everything all right?"

"No, everything is not alright," growled Jack. "As you know, I’m staying at the Grand Wallingford, and right now I’m looking at three security guards who insist I wait for the police. Can you come down here?"

"Sure, I can be there in about thirty minutes. Do you have any idea why they called the police?"

"Just a second." He switched back to his e-mail app and finished typing the last few words before sending it.

"I just sent you an e-mail. This all started when I tried to add the Maybach’s plate number to my account."

"Maybach?" Henry said, surprised.

"Read the e-mail."

"Okay, okay, just a moment."

Jack waited, and the guards looked at him sternly, while Derik sneered.

I wonder if I can get him fired?

"Jack," said Henry. "I think I understand. The note Greg gave you should be sufficient proof of ownership. Don’t say anything to the police. I’ll be there shortly."

Jack hung up and pocketed his phone. He was tempted to see if he could buy the hotel just so he could get Derik fired. However, he’d probably have to offer well over market value, and that just felt like a waste of a few million credits. He’d get his revenge, just not yet.

By the time the police had arrived, a small group of guests had gathered to watch. Two uniformed police approached and stopped to talk to Derik. One of them was younger looking, the other older.

After a brief conversation, the two police approached Jack and the younger one said, "Sir, we’ll have to ask you to come with us."

"Am I under arrest?" asked Jack.

The two police looked at each other, then the younger one said again, "Sir, we’ll have to ask you to come with us."

"Am. I. Under. Arrest?" repeated Jack.

The older officer placed his hand on the handle of a weapon. Jack couldn’t tell if it was a Taser or a pistol.

The younger officer said, "Sir, we’ll have to ask you to come with us."

Is that all this guy knows how to say?

"I think I’ll wait here until my lawyer arrives. Then we can all speak peacefully. He should be here in a few minutes."

The older officer asked, "What’s your lawyer’s name?"

"Henry Tanner," replied Jack. No hesitation.

"Sir, the hotel says you’ve stollen a guest’s vehicle," said the younger officer.

This was just ridiculous! It was a two hundred and fifty thousand credit ultra luxury car!

If he’d actually stolen it, the last thing he’d do was announce it by trying to register the plate number with the hotel. And registering the number of someone else’s car on his account wouldn’t grant him access to the vehicle.

This Derik must have mush for brains.

"We’ll discuss it when my lawyer gets here." He would not talk about this without Henry being present.
