Chapter 43: Power of Shadows

Logan and Mr. Joe soon left the creepy building that was the center for body enchantments.

Walking back out of the forest, Logan noticed the slight signals he was receiving from all around him.

Turning about, he couldn’t find what was sending him signals.

At least until he realized. ’We are in the forest where shadows are cast most of the time. Could that be why?’ He pondered as he remembered the beast he had killed.

The black panther seemed to have great perception and agility but that wasn’t all.

If he remembered correctly then not only did it burst into darkness when I’m danger but it also used shadows to teleport.

Drifting further into the memory, Logan recollected the battle and the shadows that pulsed.

’It wasn’t a beast of the darkness element, it was one of the light element.’ Logan realized his initial error.

Most people think that darkness and shadows were the same thing while that couldn’t be farther from the truth.

Darkness was the vectorial opposite of light. They existed on the same plane but at opposite ends. They were two sides of the same coin.

While shadows were a phenomenon caused by the obstruction of light.

Thinking back, Logan cursed himself. He had been a bit impatient and killed the first beast he came across thinking it was of the type he had been searching for.

But in retrospect, the thing had attacked him first so he wasn’t exactly to blame.

After walking for about ten minutes, they left the forest and went to the training hall.

Entering one of the rooms, Logan stood opposite Mr. Joe.

"World cores work just like their mana counterpart. Just release some of the world’s energy to your legs." Mr. Joe told Logan what he needed to do.

Closing his eyes, Logan extracted multicolored energy from the vortex in his legs.

Upon contact with the muscles, the energy vanished into them.

Wisps made of shadows left Logan’s feet as his perception increased.

"Interesting." Mr. Joe commented with his forehead crinkled.

Stopping the extraction, the shadows vanished and the vortex started absorbing energy once more.

’It refills itself just like a mana core?!’ Logan’s eyes widened in shock.

"It seems like your enchantment is slightly different- no, vastly different from others." Mr. Joe spoke as he approached Logan.

Looking and examining the latter’s legs, he made slight commentaries.

"Did something happen to my legs when I activated the enchantment?" Logan furrowed his eyebrows with worry in his voice.

He couldn’t let anything go wrong with his body enchantment. It was his only chance at revenge.

Peeling his eyes away from the legs, Mr. Joe shook his head.

"No, nothing happened and that’s precisely what happened." He spoke confusing Logan.

Letting out a sigh, Mr. Joe raised his hand and it turned into a tentacle.

Looking Logan in the eye he decided to explain.

"When you activate the enchantment, your body sends the world energy across your body." He paused to ensure his only student was following.

"Now, your mana core rejects it and pushes it back to its source- the enchanted limb. This causes a surplus in world energy that causes the bestial mutations." He explained the reason behind his reaction.

’So this is because I don’t have a mana core?’ Logan’s mind raced, ’So no mana core means no mutations?’ He reasoned.

’Let me examine the pros and cons of this. The pros first. I can pass off my enchantment as a spell and people expecting me to cast would be caught off guard.’ Logan smiled mentally.

’But there are also the cons. If my mana core prevents dispersion of the energy and I don’t have one, that means that I will lose my ability to fight far too quickly.’ He gritted his teeth.

’Not to mention that if I’m asked to cast a spell using normal casting I can’t. It’ll make me easy prey to someone who knows the kind of beast my enchantment came from.’ He concluded in his mind.

"I can see it’s affecting you but don’t worry, it really doesn’t mean anything. It can even help you avoid the stigma given to people of our discipline." Mr. Joe smiled.

"Not to mention the anonymity." He let out a brief chuckle.

"Now back to the testing. I hope it’s good otherwise we are undoing it." Mr. Joe waved at Logan to continue his display of power.

Extracting energy from the world cores in his legs, shadows flared out like wild tentacles from his legs.

An instinctive use and application of the power he had just gotten filled his mind.

Following them, he leaned forward and vanished with a massive pulse spreading within all shadows present.

The shadows to Mr. Joe’s left rippled and Logan appeared with a fist to his face.

Leaning backwards slightly, Mr. Joe easily avoided the attack then kicked Logan’s shins.

The latter groaned and rubbed them.

"A spatial movement ability. Rare and useful. Impressive." Mr. Joe remarked.

"Is that all that the beast you killed what capable of? Anything you saw it do, you can do even if to a weaker extent." Mr. Joe smiled lightly.

A long-lost excitement filled Logan bringing renewed vigor with it.

Taking a deep breath, shadows poured out of his body forming a small dome.

The dome collapsed sending shadows everywhere.

As the shadows that were released settled, Mr. Joe could see Logan with spheres made of shadows.

The ping pong-sized balls shot off with a bang.

With each passing moment, Logan managed to utilize the shadows in a new way.

Logan stopped playing about and decided to try something.

Closing his eyes, he took a step and turned into a mass of shadows that swarmed in the air.

The mass suddenly turned back into Logan, and he appeared very pale and weak.

"I wouldn’t advise you to use that excessively. Whatever you just did there clearly drained you so only use it as a last resort." Mr. Joe instructed before patting his shoulder.

"You are proficient enough, just practice some more when you get back from the break." He smiled before leaving the room.

"Now, it’s time to meet Orion." Logan sighed as he walked out with weak steps.
