Dominate the Super Bowl-Chapter 292 - 291 Bonnie and Clyde
Back at the University of Alabama, Burns had convinced Li Wei to give football a try, telling him the technical barriers weren’t as high as one might think.
Looking back, it seems Burns did everything in his power to downplay the difficulties to avoid scaring Li Wei away.
Wide Receiver. Quarterback. Running back.
Three positions, three types, each fundamentally requiring a different approach to the game.
For Wide Receivers, the routes are intricate: knowing when and where to cut inside or outside, whether to run towards the sideline or the middle of the field, aim for deep regions or short passes— not only must they remember their own routes but also their teammates’, and make adjustments according to the opponent’s tactics—
Many rookie Wide Receivers can’t get on the field immediately simply because they can’t memorize these routes, and if they can’t, all the team’s offensive planning might be in vain.
For a Quarterback, it’s even more complicated. They need to read defenses, survey the entire field, and improvise accordingly. If they don’t have a mental image of the entire field, their passing vision might fail to open up—
When people play the game Connect Four, some instantly see different ways to connect the pieces, while others, even with eyes wide open, can’t see any connections at all. That’s one difference between an average and an outstanding Quarterback.
This is why, besides daily basic training, different positions require specific professional training to enhance the players’ abilities.
To many, the load of daily practice is already hard to bear, leaving no room for additional training— biting off more than they can chew.
But to Li Wei, it was more than just a brand-new world—
Do you remember what Burns said?
Football is somewhat like a battlefield, where offense and defense require strategy, and "The Art of War" by Sun Tzu can be wholly applied to football games.
For Li Wei, understanding Wide Receivers and Quarterbacks helped him to switch perspectives to observe the game, to understand the strategy and interactions in a more comprehensive and profound way. This was extremely fascinating.
So, starting from last week, besides attending Running Back meetings, Li Wei also joined the Tight Ends and Wide Receivers meetings, learning about routes with the help of Kelsey—
Reed welcomed him with open arms and legs, given that Hunter was already there.
Maybe Hunter was the only one feeling the pressure of competition, as it suddenly became intense.
After training, Li Wei would study Quarterback strategies with Mahomes, not only learning new game strategies but also reviewing past game footage to help Mahomes understand Smith’s tactics and, on top of that, try to find better options.
Life was exceptionally fulfilling, packed from morning till night.
Creak.
After an early morning run and being the first to arrive at the Kansas City Chiefs’ training facility, Li Wei smoothly pushed open the doors to the indoor training room, only to be surprised by a figure leaning against the medical room’s desk.
It was Lilith.
It was early, and she had just arrived at the training facility, her golden hair not yet tied into its usual ponytail, instead hanging lazily over her shoulders, wearing a light gray sweater with jeans— the strict and professional demeanor gone, leaving her appearance much softer.
Leaning against the desk with her long legs crossed, she was engrossed in a book, with a substantial stack of tomes placed beside her, the sparse, bright morning sunlight gently falling on her shoulders like a playful sprite.
Hearing the noise, Lilith suddenly looked up, clearly flustered, not expecting someone at such an early hour.
Seeing that it was Li Wei who had arrived, Lilith became a bit more composed. It wasn’t surprising that it was him; his figure, arriving early for team training every day, had become a beautiful part of the landscape at the training facility. Even the security guard at the gate had become fast friends with Li Wei despite the age difference.
Lilith slightly turned her body and took the hairband off her wrist, biting it in her mouth as she swiftly tied her hair into a ponytail on her shoulder. Then, turning to face Li Wei, she noticed that his gaze had been quietly fixed on her all along, making her feel a bit shy and causing her eyes to flicker.
"So, where’s your Bonnie?"
Teasingly, he threw that comment over—
"Bonnie and Clyde," a classic crime film based on a true story, had the main characters Clyde and Bonnie respectively.
Clearly, Lilith knew that Li Wei and Mahomes were neighbors as well as training partners, often coming and going together. Since Li Wei had already arrived at the training facility, Mahomes was surely already in the locker room.
Li Wei got the joke right away and looked at Lilith with a hint of a smile, "Hello, I’m Clyde. Bonnie is parking the car. Hands up, it’s a robbery, hand over all your kinesiology tape."
His dead-serious manner made Lilith break into a smile, "Who needs it? You or Bonnie?"
"Me." Li Wei stated candidly, "Today, I’m planning on doing some drills that require sudden stops and turns, so I need to protect my knees and ankles."
As the season progressed, they indeed had to pay more and more attention to injuries—not to wait until they happen to treat them, but to take preventive measures and protection before they occur.
Lilith was very familiar with Li Wei’s physical condition. She was initially concerned that there might be an injury, but now she was relieved to hear him say this.
Without saying much more, she opened a drawer, rummaged through it, and found two rolls of kinesiology tape. As she was about to toss them to him, she saw Li Wei walking towards the medical room’s entrance, where her recently read books were lying on the desk.
"Li Wei!" Lilith called out nervously.

Li Wei, "I thought I was Clyde."
Lilith had no mind to entertain Li Wei’s joke and quickly closed the book.
Li Wei was surprised, "Is this a secret?"
Lilith caught her breath, opening her mouth as if to deny with "It’s none of your business" on the tip of her tongue. Yet, she hesitated for a moment, bathed in Li Wei’s sincere and candid gaze, and finally, she shook her head, "No, it’s not a secret. I’m just doubting myself."

Those books, although Li Wei hadn’t delved into them, were likely professional references closely related to the mental health of professional athletes.
Currently, Lilith’s role within the Kansas City Chiefs medical team was as a data analyst, essentially an assistant without much say in the team.
Now it appeared that Lilith was pursuing professional learning, aiming to elevate herself and alter her position within the team.
But Lilith lacked confidence.
"You don’t know how hard it is for a woman to take each step forward in a man’s sport." Lilith’s seemingly casual words hid countless difficulties and complexities—
What came easily to others required her to deliver double, triple, or even tenfold the results just to be recognized. The path forward was littered with visible and invisible thresholds, and while others might say, "Just try a little harder," only she who had truly been through the struggle knew that many things couldn’t be achieved by effort alone.
But in the end, she didn’t continue:
This was the path she had chosen, and no matter what happened, she would persist. No matter how difficult or thorny the road was, she refused to give up or surrender.
