Roar, roar, roar.

Felix was the first to start the commotion as the empty church began to liven up.

Annie’s smile also fully bloomed.

“But the reason is not just that.”

“It’s not just because he was as handsome as a ‘Seventeen’ magazine model…”

Amid the laughter, Felix protested, “GQ!” “GQ!”

“Nor because he should have lived longer, but only made it to nineteen…”

Felix kept shaking his head, “Annie, you’re so disappointing. Seventeen, I was seventeen.”

Annie’s shoulders slumped, and she looked at Felix with a lifeless expression, “Please, can’t you tell? I wanted you to live longer, you meddlesome jerk, interrupting my eulogy. You should be dead now.”

Felix burst out laughing.

Annie continued.

“But, in the future, when I turn eighteen and Li Wei comes to my house to invite me to the graduation ball, and the whole world looks at me with envy, I will tell Li Wei, much to my regret, that I can’t go with him to the graduation ball because…”

She took a deep breath.

“Because a jerk had promised to take me to the graduation ball but broke that promise in his nineteenth year. God, I hate men who don’t keep their promises. If it weren’t for him, my graduation ball would have been different.”

Annie’s eighteen, Felix’s nineteen, those were a distant dream, forever unknown whether that day would ever come.

Annie was a bit flustered, hurriedly rubbing her eyes, and took another deep breath, forcing a smile back on her face.

“However, after making my point, I would still hold Li Wei’s right hand. Please, it’s Li Wei. Who wouldn’t want to go to the graduation ball with Li Wei? I would be the brightest girl in the whole school.”

As she smiled, tears still rolled down, and Annie turned sideways, quickly wiping her face with both hands.

“Sorry, I, don’t know, this is too hard, I… I hope Felix, that jerk, can laugh about this in heaven.”

Hurriedly, Annie turned away from the podium only to find Li Wei coming towards her with a smile, gentlemanly extending his right hand.

Annie was stunned.

Li Wei politely bowed slightly, “Annie Gallas, may I have the honor of inviting you to the graduation ball?”

Annie’s face was full of surprise, her mouth slightly open, and her eyes moistening again, but she quickly smiled, taking Li Wei’s right hand, “Of course.”

“But, tonight’s star is Felix, we need to keep it low-key, otherwise, he would be sad.”

It should have been a whisper, but Annie blurted it out, causing Mahomes and Kelsey to almost burst into laughter.

Felix protested, “Annie, you weren’t supposed to let me hear that. A little quieter, a little quieter.”

Li Wei looked at Annie, and the two exchanged a knowing look, then Li Wei and Annie sat down in the front row, Li Wei turning to look at Felix.

Felix was laughing, but the sadness and bitterness behind the smile never faded.

Li Wei, “Twenty-five cents for your thoughts now.”

Felix’s eyes dodged briefly, he instinctively wanted to deny it and escape, but he eventually forced himself to face Li Wei.

“Forget,” Felix said.

Taking a deep breath, “I know this might sound childish, but I always thought I could be a hero, even if not a superhero like Iron Man. I believed my life would be incredibly grand.”

“You know, making it to the front page of the New York Times, changing the world on my own, or discovering groundbreaking inventions that alter the course of human civilization.”

“Just like you, Li Wei, emerging as a rookie and astonishing the entire League, bringing hope to Kansas City and claiming the Super Bowl victory.”

“I, I should be special.”

Felix’s voice was somewhat choked, revealing a hint of unwillingness and helplessness, as the eternally sunny and positive young man finally showed his vulnerability.

Li Wei looked at Felix, “You are special, Felix.”

Felix muttered softly, “Yes, yes, I know. My mom has told me countless times, but… but, you know what I mean.”

Li Wei, “I know what you mean, but I don’t agree.”

Felix had not anticipated such a response.

Li Wei didn’t avoid his gaze, “Felix, you don’t need to care about whether people remember you or not.”

Kelsey caught the inadvertent anger in Li Wei’s words, “Li Wei, don’t be angry.”

Li Wei looked directly at Kelsey, “I am angry.”

Kelsey choked.

Li Wei, “I’m angry because Felix never realizes how special he is. Not just to his mother, to Annie, to me, to Patrick, to Travis, to those kids in the chemotherapy room, to the guys in the Kansas City Chiefs locker room.”

“Isn’t that enough?”

“You think the only way to make a life meaningful and valuable is to be remembered by people, but do you realize who these people really are?”

“Is it Jack cuddling his phone in his bedroom in an Alaskan glacier, giving you a like? Or Jose from a slum in Monterrey who forgets you two seconds after tearing up from your story? Or perhaps Kevin, who deals with billions of US dollars and briefly glances at a newspaper headline?”

“People?”

“Who are these people? On social media, how many of those likes and shares are from bots? How much of that mountain of data is just fluff?”

“You obsess over those numbers, yet fail to see your own life, those real, lively, warm souls. If we aren’t important to you, if our firm memories of you still aren’t enough, I can only say, I’m very sorry.”

Felix sat there, tears streaming down his face, his shoulders quivering slightly, “Li Wei…”

Li Wei’s eyes also reddened slightly, “Felix, we will remember you. You aren’t just a number or a symbol. You are Felix Gray, the humorous, sunny, handsome Felix, the one who drives the entire Arrowhead Stadium to cheer from the stands, the one who fiercely fights death and tells it to get lost.”

“Felix, it’s not over yet. Understand?”

Felix just sat there, silently sobbing—

But he was scared.

For the first time, he seemed to truly hear death’s footsteps. He could feel death’s scythe sharp on his neck and suddenly realized he wasn’t as brave as he thought, nor was he ready to face death calmly.

This thought crushed him.

Li Wei also felt uncomfortable, shifted his gaze, and took a deep breath. He thought he was mature and wise enough to face these moments in life, after all, he was a man who had been through a lot; but soon he realized it wasn’t that simple.

They thought they were brave and strong because they had never truly faced life and death themselves.

Only when it happens do you truly know your reaction.

All of this was much harder than imagined.
