Chapter 28 - 28: Capturing the Mysterious Human Girl — A New Zerg Unit!
The Crest-Head Windtail Serpent let out a furious hiss as its massive body coiled tightly, then uncoiled with explosive force.
Using the recoil, it shot forward like a blur, narrowly dodging the Devouring Gold Rat's strike.
SSSHHHRIP!
A harsh screech tore through the air as the rat's spinning blades missed and slammed into the ground, carving a deep rift into the earth!
The Windtail Serpent's pupils narrowed. That strike—terrifying.
Had it landed, the damage would have been catastrophic!
"Ssssss!!"
The serpent hissed menacingly, its tongue flickering as it tried to intimidate the monstrous rat before it.
It had no idea why this Devouring Gold Rat was so enormous or why it looked so different from the species it knew—but that didn't shake its confidence.
Just moments earlier, it had sensed the soul power fluctuations coming from the rat—it was still only at the millennium level.
"BZZZT—!"
The Devouring Gold Rat raised its front limbs, its crimson eyes glowing with cruelty and bloodlust. It charged forward again, showing no hint of fear.
The Windtail Serpent flared with rage.
A mere thousand-year beast dares challenge me?!
The crest on its head trembled violently as it let out a deafening roar and lunged straight toward the rat.
The two soul beasts collided once more, shaking the forest with dust and debris.
The girl, who had been sitting on the ground in shock, was completely frozen. She stared blankly at the brutal fight unfolding in front of her, taking several seconds to process what was happening.
Eventually, she snapped out of it and began quietly sneaking away.
"Phew... I nearly died just now. Thank heavens that rat came to distract the serpent, or I'd be a goner."
Now far from the battling beasts, the girl sighed with relief and patted her chest—causing a visible ripple beneath her clothing.
She turned and looked back—despite the distance, the chaos of the fight was still clearly visible. The two soul beasts were tearing into each other without restraint.
Looks like they didn't notice me at all, she thought, relaxing slightly. Yet doubt flickered in her eyes.
What were those green bugs that dropped from the trees? Why did they explode so violently? I've never seen anything like them...
And that rat... it still gave her chills just thinking about its grotesque, monstrous appearance.
Since when did Devouring Gold Rats look like that?
She shook her head. No use overthinking it. There were countless soul beast species across the continent—it was entirely possible she'd just never encountered this one before.
After resting briefly, she resumed her escape toward the edge of the Star Dou Forest.
Still, the encounter left her uneasy. This forest is way too dangerous... The Sunset Forest probably isn't much better either. Next time, I'll make sure Father sends some top-tier experts with me.
She clenched her fists in frustration. That soul ring had practically been in her grasp—and it had all gone to waste!
Then a purple-haired figure flashed in her mind. Her gaze turned sharp.
"Xiao Qing... I won't let this go. One day, I'll step on you and keep you underfoot forever!"
"ROAR—!"
A sudden roar from ahead yanked her back to the present.
Her eyes widened in horror as she saw a massive Earth King Beetle blocking her path, roaring in her direction.

It looked horrifyingly similar to the mutated rat from earlier—its body armored in dark purple-black plating, its eyes blood-red triangles brimming with killing intent.
Panicked, she spun around to run the other way.
But her soul power had been nearly drained in her previous encounter—she wasn't sure she could outrun this thing.
The moment she turned, her body froze.
A wave of numbness rippled through her nerves like an electric shock.
Right in front of her crouched an enormous Thousand-Jin Ant, its freakishly small, twisted head inches from her own.
Its honeycomb-like array of red-glowing compound eyes stared straight at her—unblinking, unmoving.
"AAAHHH!!"
The sudden face-to-face ambush sent her into a complete panic. She shrieked at the top of her lungs.
In response, the Thousand-Jin Ant opened its grotesque maw, revealing a mass of writhing flesh and razor-sharp teeth, and let out a thunderous screech.
"SSSKRRAAAH—!"
Her vision went dark.
The last thing she saw before blacking out was the ant pinning her down with two of its limbs, piercing her clothes to secure her tightly—then flapping its wings and taking off with her in tow.
BOOM—!
A black figure leapt high into the air and crashed into the ground, splitting the earth and kicking up a massive dust cloud.
Two crimson lights glowed from within the smoke—locking onto the Windtail Serpent, which had tried to flee.
The Devouring Gold Rat roared once more, its muscular legs flexing as it launched forward in another explosive charge.
The Windtail Serpent's eyes flickered with hesitation. It twisted its body and darted aside, once again narrowly avoiding the devastating strike.
The mutated Devouring Gold Rat was fast—almost as fast as the winged Thousand-Jin Ant—but the serpent still held the edge in speed.
It twisted and coiled through the battlefield like a serpent-shaped shadow, effortlessly dodging every strike and toying with its opponent.
It had tried striking back, too—but being a non-venomous soul beast, its primary weapons were its speed and crushing constriction.
Earlier, it had tried coiling around the rat, only to realize—its enemy felt like solid steel.
Cold. Hard. Unyielding.
Despite all its strength, it couldn't even make the slightest dent. Worse, it had been sliced by the rat's spinning limbs during the attempt.
"Ssssss!!"
The Windtail Serpent hissed again, eyes narrowed with wariness.
This rat—though only a millennium beast—had completely shattered its understanding.
It couldn't be injured. It couldn't be restrained. Fighting further was pointless.
Having made its decision, the serpent twisted its body and shot off toward the core region of the Star Dou Forest.
CLANG—!
But a new figure suddenly blocked its path.
A monstrous, alien Zerg—only slightly smaller than the rat—stood before it.
Its back was covered in heavily plated armor, lined with brutal spikes.
Six massive, clawed legs were anchored deep into the ground, resembling indestructible pillars.
Its head was recessed into its torso, ringed with thick shell plating.
At the front of its face, a single black horn shimmered with a deadly glint, and its terrifying mandibles were layered in three concentric jaws.
Three glowing red eyes stared emotionlessly at the Windtail Serpent.
Its presence exuded impenetrable strength, like an implacable fortress come to life.
