Chapter 955: Humanity’s grudge Part 2

After making their entrance to the city, the Dungeon Raiders kept walking across the east district with their sights placed on the Celes building, where Uriel had informed them beforehand the gods would be. It was just an educated guess, but that was the only building that checked all the boxes. A needlessly large entrance, impressively high and luxurious to the point of being tacky. To say it was tempting for the gods to claim it as their own would be an understatement. It would be much more accurate to say it was impossible for them to resist.

The walk was long, but a necessary part of the plan as they wanted to give the population of the city enough time to be aware of their presence and to know what they were about to do.

"My name is Uriel Sage and I demand you come outside and answer for your crimes." Uriel spoke the words that had been carefully planned to convey their intentions and revealing the true identity of the legendary figure called Rider by the inhabitants of the city.

The result was immediate as it caused an uproar in all the social media, but more importantly, reporters from every media started to investigate whatever they could find about Uriel causing him to snicker as he could see it happen in real time in the many TVs that were mostly used for marketing products in the streets.

However, the information about Uriel online was not just limited but almost non existent and despite their best efforts there was little they could find about it. A particularly competent reporter found out a match with an archaeology student and even though the picture looked nothing like the masculine figure riding a jaguar he still spread the news.

"Top of his class, Uriel Sage graduated last year as an archaeologist." One of the news anchors said and the other continued.

"Wow! So Raider was an archaeologist and not a full time hunter?" This caused many reactions in the viewers, but soon people started calling to the show claiming to have information about him. Of course, those who called were either lying or had only met him but never talked to him. There were even a few that had participated in bullying him, but they were reluctant to share that information. This, however, did not apply for June who still resented Uriel for getting in her way during the destruction of Cibola.

That time, Mark asked her to save him from Uriel and she teleported him to safety along with Mason the master of the Society. She spun the situation to make it look as if Uriel had been attempting to kill people without a reason and she also portrayed Mark as a hero, which ultimately worked against them both.

For June it meant that she inadvertently missed an opportunity to unveil Raider’s identity which had been the largest mystery for a long time. After all, a hunter that stood up to protect humanity while not asking for anything in return, not even fame, was an oddity as it could have easily garnered him the title of champion of humanity which came with many perks, but Raider refused to even show his face.

"Don’t be mistaken, that man you see there is a criminal," June spoke to the camera, her face portrayed in so few TVs that no one could even hear her voice through the myriad of voices that filled the city. "he’s opposing the gods because he wants to take away the many blessings they’re bestowing upon us! He’s a traitor!" She declared over and over as a firm believer of Aphrodite who had blessed her with beauty beyond what she believed possible June didn’t need any other reason to oppose Uriel.

The Dungeon Raiders stood in silence as they watched the seventh power in action, changing the minds of the people that surrounded them from chanting Uriel’s name to spitting in the ground and cursing at him as more TVs showed June’s face.

"But fear not, because the true protectors of this city are ready for the challenge!" June announced as Hazel and the Defenders walked outside the Celes tower. They all wore full orichalcum gear and had advanced weapons that could tear through hordes of monster level cryptids and turn an entity level cryptid to shreds.

Hazel stood tall with a round shield decorated with olive branches carved around it and a long bronze spear that was clearly a powerful artifact, only it wasn’t hazel. It was actually Athena possessing her body which was precisely why she decided to come face them from the beginning as they knew she was on friendly terms with Uriel and he would think twice before killing her.

The rest of the defenders were also possessed by gods, albeit not the most powerful or renowned they were still powerful enough to be considered beyond the holy rank level which only made it more impressive when the Dungeon Raiders lunged to attack first.

As usual, Medusa was the one who attacked first and she did so with her opening move. A flying kick that served both to clear the distance and to cause the most damage due to the momentum. Her target was decided from the moment she saw Marina, a huntress whom she did not like due to Uriel seeing her bare chested once. It could be said it was a silly reason to pick an opponent, but with Athena remaining on the back she didn’t really care much who did she face.

The next to reach an opponent was Sam, whose Celerity skill amounted to his wings allowed him to move at a speed only the high resolution cameras were able to catch. He also did not care much who his opponent was and he just chose the one who seemed to be the strongest among them, a tall bulky man who wielded Hazel’s signature weapon, the earth hammer.

The combat was already raging by the time Luna reached her opponent, not because she was slow but because she chose to walk towards him rather than mindlessly leaping into battle. It made the goddess hidden within the huntress to heave a sigh of relief as her opponent was obviously the weakest and the least aggressive one.

"May I ask you a question?" Luna said through the barbarian looking armor ill fitted to convey such innocence.

"Why should I answer? We are enemies." The goddess scoffed through her human vessel.

"Because you are the goddess of truth." Luna declared in a monotone making the goddess within shiver in fear.

Veritas, the goddess of truth, had no qualms on killing humans. Especially those who opposed her, but her specialty was not violence. Her weapon of choice was the truth, which she would wield against her enemies rendering incapable of fighting, some even wished to kill themselves after having just a conversation. Yet this was the first time the truth had been used against her and many questions nagged at the back of her head as she wondered how could she know her identity in such a short period of time and what kind of hidden power would allow it.

This caused the goddess of truth to spiral down into more doubts, eventually reaching at the conclusion that the only way for her was to actually fight as the huntress seemed physically weak. She was also considered weak among the gods which is why she usually chose speaking over fighting, but she was still a divine being and likely stronger than any mortal. More importantly, her real self was safe in the Olimpieion and whatever happened to her body didn’t matter.

Veritas launched herself forward, her fist listed ready for the next move after the huntress attempted to dodge, but that didn’t happen. Instead, Luna took the full brunt of the attack with her wolf shaped helm. Being made of orichalcum it was sturdy enough to withstand an attack of such caliber and the goddess sudden confusion allowed Luna to rapidly shift into a werewolf and bite off the goddess hand before she could take it off.

Being the last to start fighting, Luna was the first to finish her opponent off as the goddess of truth suddenly vanished leaving the real huntress unconscious. The next to finish the fight was Sam, as he had unwittingly chosen the weakest god amidst those who possessed the defenders. Then Medusa gave the finishing blow to the minor goddess of foam who had possessed Marina. ƒгeeweɓn૦vel.com

"Damn it! They know what they’re doing!" Aphrodite clicked her tongue as she watched the fight unfold on the TV. Uriel had remained back along with Nika, which put them outside their reach and they had also taken measures to prevent the gods from overwhelming them with numbers.

After all, the gods needed the public opinion more than they needed their vessels. If they were killed, all they had to do was to possess more humans. This played against the gods who needed to keep the appearance of being the righteous ones and couldn’t use any underhanded methods or even use numeric advantage.

The Dungeon Raiders showing up in the city with fanfares and openly declaring themselves as enemies was not unexpected, but the fact that they could exorcise the gods without killing the vessels was an unforeseen factor that she had failed to account for.

"I’ll go next." Ares said, casually grabbing a spiked mace from his arsenal and walking downstairs.
