Chapter 980: Lightning strikes twice Part 1
Many things happened on the battlefield at the same time, too many even for the Lightseeker himself to keep track of. Sam’s ability allowed him to see almost everything and while his brain had evolved to process a large amount visual information, it was not enough to cope with the overwhelming amount of events that went on at the same time which is why he decided to keep his attention on the biggest threats only.
Not that it was easy for him to focus when most of the field was filled with debris, dust and scattered particles of what used to be Uriel. Said particles attempted to reform themselves into a functioning body at a speed Sam never experienced back when he was possessed by Water warlock, though now instead of envious he was relieved because he also never experienced such limitless power being unleashed on him like it kept happening to Uriel.
Lightning struck the exact location where Uriel’s body was forming before he reached the size of a peanut which made it impossible for the hunter to do absolutely anything. Luckily, the same was true for Zeus who could not deviate his attention for a tenth of a second without risking Uriel regenerating completely and running away.
"What is taking you so long!? Kill them all!" Zeus channeled so much flux energy his grunt became an absolute order even to the gods that didn’t want to take part in the fight like Aphrodite and she rushed in for the kill of her seemingly distracted opponent.
Her slender legs and toned body moved so gracefully it seemed as though the wind whistled a catcall and she launched a fist deserving of the most revered goddess of the current times, yet for all her power she was left speechless when Sam blocked her attack without so much as turning his head to look at her.
"What is this power!?" She flinched, then attempted an attack from a different perspective at twice her speed finding the exact same result.
"Stay back or face the consequences." Sam said after finding her annoying enough to distract himself from Zeus for just enough time to speak.
"You’re just a holy rank hunter, how can you be this powerful?" A shocked Aphrodite asked yet the answer came to her not in words but when she saw how the battle proceeded.
Aphrodite expected the fight between Medusa and Athena to be as short as the first time they fought, but for some reason Medusa was still standing with nothing but a thin streak of blood coming off her mouth.
Bacchus who didn’t want to fight Luna and only pretended, was now forced to start getting serious due to Zeus absolute authority, but despite landing a few clean hits Luna was completely unscathed and the one dripping blood was actually the god inhabiting Lamar’s body. It happened while he struck Luna’s maw and it may as well have happened by accidentally cutting his knuckle on her fang, but the question of how could she remain standing after such a hit could not be answered by anyone present except for Luna herself.
"I am... a hybrid." She bellowed in her wolfish voice as though it explained everything, then proceeded to jump on top of Lamar to unleash a chain of claw attacks that made Aphrodite be thankful that Luna was not her direct opponent.
And then there was Nika, who stood above the god of war in single combat despite his centuries of combat training and experience, though contrary to the other cases her advantage in battle was not a mystery.
If the speed of light was the fastest speed a particle could achieve, then the same was true for shadows and Nika had now learned how to properly use her trait. She moved her physical body in such flexible ways to the point where Ares started thinking she was actually formless. But her dodging capability was just one of the factors that got Nika to have an advantage, the other being the power of the Red thread of fate that made her stronger with every cut she landed.
For a god as powerful as Ares the amount of flux energy Nika stole was inconsequential, but even that slight amount of energy was a game changer for Nika that allowed her trait to reach the levels of imagination.
A shadow armor sturdy enough to block the javelins Ares managed to land, shadow weapons that would form in her hand whenever she wanted with the shape she wanted and not to mention the ability to move through the shadows like as if she was a shadow herself.
Seeing the shift in the tides made Aphrodite flinch back a couple steps, but she was then met with a tall man wearing a silvery coat.
"Sorry to bother you, but could you please leave this place?" Soulfire asked nicely as ever.
"Are you dumb or..." Aphrodite scoffed a refusal that was met with a merciless kick on the ribs by the man Uriel usually described as ’stupid handsome’ or ’handsome stupid’ depending on his mood.
But although the hit was fast and powerful, it was nowhere near enough to even cause a scratch on Aphrodite’s perfect skin and only managed to send her away. She stopped herself by dragging a hand on the ground so seamlessly somehow not a speck of dust soiled her clothes and just when she was about to get back into the fight a hunter landed on the back of her head with his knee causing the goddess face to sink in the ground.
"Hope I’m not late for the party." Michael Hathaway casually said before jumping to help Nika who was having trouble finding an opening in the god of war’s posture.
"You only call this a party because you’ve never seen what a bar on the slum looks like." Nika laughed as they overpowered the god of war on two flanks. The first strikes did nothing as the bronze armor kept Ares safe from any physical strike, or that was supposed to be the case because while Nika lacked the strength to do any damage the same was not true for Hathaway whose strikes felt heavy as though he used a hammer instead of his bare hands.
The cause of Michael’s power was up for debate, but it could be summarized with just one word: Money.
Anything that could possibly help in a fight and that could be bought with money Hathaway bought. From small charms to large artifacts, anything that looked old enough to be an artifact and that was supposed to empower the owner was dutifully tested by the Hathaway company and then selected for him. Particularly the ones that could work at a distance as it was impossible for Mike to wear so many trinkets in a battlefield, though he did bring along a legendary sword whose existence was only theorized but never proven.
It was one of a set of two swords, one fairly large and the other was uncomfortably large. The one Hathaway chose was the latter and as he shifted from using his hands to wielding the sword Nika took a glimpse of the weapon and pondered out loud.
"I think I’ve seen that espada before." She shook her head, then casually dodged a flurry of melee strikes delivered by Ares who thought he had a chance to finally kill Nika.
Rather than getting angry, Nika punished the disrespect by using the same technique she had seen Uriel use in combat against armored enemies and she skillfully slashed the joints of Ares’ armor causing several grazes that caused nothing but a small discomfort. What happened when Hathaway finally brandished his weapon was an entirely different story.
When the large blade clashed against the bronze, the armor did precisely what it was supposed to do and kept Ares safe. However, due to the immense pressure applied by the blunt blade the armor was battered and the same thing happened whenever Hathaway struck.
Little by little the armor was growing more uncomfortable for Ares as it was compressed under the merciless weight of the sword and right before it got tot the point where Ares’ movement was hindered by his own battered armor and could not move anymore.
"One down, three more to go." Nika turned around and counted the remaining enemies they needed to incapacitate without killing, but Hathaway did not follow and stayed back addressing a look of disdain and hatred towards the helpless god of war.
"So high and mighty, look at you now. You’re but a worm waiting to be stepped on." Those were Hathaway’s words before swinging the ancient blade through Ares or rather Tate’s neck.
"What have you done, Michael..." Nika gasped the only words she could spell as her mind was blank with horror.
"Only what I came here to do," Said Michael eyes brimming with power at the same time three pairs of wings emerged from his head, torso and feet respectively. "to kill them all and become the strongest being in the universe."
