Chapter 668: Hornet Widow; Defeated

--

Hornet Widow was indeed figuring out her enemy.

Her instincts as an assassin-type combat specialist already warned her that her enemy was more than what he looked like on the outside. His confident gait and stance, as well as his measured and calm gaze, were all signs of this.

She has never been one to underestimate her enemies; if anything, she even overestimates them most of the time. That’s how she cinches victory most of the time despite all odds.

But, although her instincts warned her about this guy, she couldn’t properly estimate just how truly terrifying he was, which was highly abnormal for her.

Hornet Widow faced many opponents in the past; most were way stronger than her. A few were so strong that she was tempted to surrender right away because her small bag of tricks wouldn’t be enough to bridge the sheer disparity in actual strength.

She knew when to advance and retreat; she also knew when she had a chance and when she was completely outclassed, and all of this was because of her instincts.

But today, right at this very moment, that very same and trusted instinct of hers was failing her, and that has never happened before; therefore, it’s abnormal.

But now is definitely not the time to falter. She’s in the middle of a match. Since her instincts aren’t working properly, then she’d use something else.

’My instincts are drawing blanks.’

’I don’t know if it’s because of him or me, but now is not the time for me to panic. I’ll figure it out later. Right now, I must focus on the match.’

’My poisons don’t work on him.’ She discovered this from her observations so far.

’I can sense heat fluctuations. Fire Laws? Very likely. Chances of it being at the Great Law level? Very likely too. My poison should have an effect; otherwise, only Great Fire Laws can shrug it off.’

’I’ve faced a handful of Sword Masters before too. Enough that I could tell that he’s also one.’

’Conclusion: He’s very strong. Great Law of Sword and Fire, I’m afraid only a few people I know could match him in frontal and direct assault.’

’What are my options? ’

’Assassination is my thing, and I should stick with that. Now is not the time to try out other tricks in hopes they’d work. My opponent is annoying; he’s the calm type, not the reckless kind. He won’t fall for petty tricks and manipulation.’

’I know that he’s luring me in. Anybody who had been in enough battles will easily see through it. He already knows my fighting style. I wasn’t hiding it in the first place, so that’s normal.’

’Tch, I guess I have no other choices. Darkness it is then.’

Hornet Widow’s internal monologue might’ve been lengthy, but in reality, it only took an instant. As soon as she made a choice, she immediately acted upon it. Being indecisive wouldn’t help her right now, after all.

Fwoosh!

Out of nowhere, darkness erupted, swallowing everything in sight, originating from Hornet Widow herself.

This was her trump card, the Great Law of Darkness.

The dark smog erupted and propagated fast. It didn’t take long before it covered the entirety of the battlefield.

Hornet Widow’s presence had completely blended with the darkness. She was the darkness, and the darkness was her. Even those that are proud of their senses wouldn’t be able to locate her in here at all.

Moreover, Hornet Widow could appear anywhere in this domain. Her form could transition between material and immaterial darkness as the speed of her thoughts. Meaning that she could commit to an attack in one second, and if she discovers that it would fail or wouldn’t work, she could also retreat in the darkness in the next second, keeping her safe and secure and giving her many options while this domain was active.

The live spectators, such as Steven, had truly lost Hornet Widow’s presence at all in this dark domain. She was already elusive in their perspective before, and with this now, she’s just plainly untraceable.

The only one who stuck out like a sore thumb in this darkness was Cedric.

Despite being swallowed by the darkness, it couldn’t digest his colors. It’s like he’s the only living being that exists in this space, and he doesn’t even look remotely bothered by this fact at all.

And in truth, he really wasn’t. If anything, he even found this somewhat nostalgic.

’Whoa! It’s like I’m back at the Heart of the Void,’ he muttered inwardly with a chuckle.

Truth is, this domain of darkness doesn’t even come close to the real abyssal feel of the void. It’s very lacking even. And Cedric has walked to the far stretches of what the void can be.

Sure, the Void he knows might be different from the Void here, but the fact still remains that this darkness was just not as scary as the Void back in his homeworld. If anything, it felt nice, cool, and cozy to him. The silence it brought was really nice.

Clang!

Hornet Widow tried to attack while Cedric was immersed in his nostalgia, but just like before, it didn’t work.

Ever since Cedric’s thought chambers have divided into many, ambushes and assassinations have never worked on him. And that’s simply because he always leaves a few thought chambers paying attention to his surroundings. As soon as he senses the attempt, his body will react to it, even though he’s mostly focused on other things.

This makes him the worst enemy of assassins, but they don’t have to know that.

Had he wanted, Cedric could’ve killed her right then and there.

While Hornet Widow could freely switch between material and immaterial forms within this dark domain, that depends on her reaction speed. Anything, or anybody, who could move and react faster than her could exploit the hell out of this flaw. And it’s one that Cedric already found out the moment she attempted to disappear from his senses.

That’s the other thing too...

To others, Hornet Widow might’ve disappeared and was completely untraceable. But to Cedric? She’s like a beacon orbiting around him like a curious firefly.

Cedric’s eyes could stare at the very structure of reality itself without being punished, so how could he possibly miss her with this ability?

As the origin of his dark domain, he could instantly tell where she was, no matter how fast or how elusive she moved within this space, and it wasn’t that hard to do since the darkness quite literally moved according to her lead.

In truth, she’s become easier to locate here compared to how she hid before.

But of course, she had no way of knowing this. She couldn’t have possibly thought that Cedric’s eyes were that special.

And to not make her think otherwise, he must distract her away from that thought. Especially since he could already tell that this lady was far more cunning and intelligent than her appearance and chosen image.

Fwoosh!

Cedric raised a hand, condensing a small fireball on his palms. Licks of heat started emanating from it, but they couldn’t go far before being devoured by the darkness.

It didn’t matter, though.

Cedric raised his hand above his head along with the fireball, which quickly grew in size.

Within seconds, the fireball quintupled in size and was still growing; the heat it was releasing was becoming more and more terrifying.

At some point, it started rising, and Cedric was along with it.

It didn’t take long before the tiny fireball turned into a raging sun, releasing a bright golden brilliance and horrifying heat that washed away and melted the darkness.

The son wasn’t a simple one either. Orbiting it was a belt of golden sword rays, three layers of them. Each one was packed with intense heat and unparalleled sharpness. At any given moment, they’re ready to rain down on the dumbfounded and helpless lady down below.

Gobsmacked and bitter.

That’s what Hornet Widow felt at this very moment. Because who could’ve thought that her opponent this time just happens to have the ability to just casually create a whole freaking sun?

Her trump card, one that she doesn’t use very often unless she’s determined to win, was gotten rid of like it was an inconsequential thing.

No. That’s not right.

It’s not like the sun got rid of her darkness. It just forced it to retreat into her shadows. The appearance of the sun reinforced the natural phenomenon that shadows retreat at the appearance of the light. That’s just it, plain and simple.

Because of this, her trump card was completely neutralized. While that sun hovers above, she wouldn’t be able to move her shadows and release her darkness at all because the golden radiance of the sun and its heat will just melt it in an instant.

A sad yet bitter smile appeared on her face.

Now she understood why her instincts were failing her. It’s because she came across an existence that goes way beyond her conception.

She never stood a chance to begin with.

With a slight move of his wrist, Cedric sent a solar flare directly upon her. Instantly incinerating her from existence. Hornet Widow didn’t fight back. It’s no use. Instead, she just accepted her defeat with open arms.

[Victory!]
