Chapter 222: ...Then kill me

As Leo continued walking, Esme followed him discreetly.

She did not realize how many turns he took but when he stopped in front of a room, she frowned.

What was he doing?

Before she could stop him, he walked inside the room without hesitation.

Leo was not friendly with people and he never roamed around like this.

Unless he knew the person.. he would not just barge in like that.

’’You are here,’’ Esme heard a familiar voice from inside.

As she glanced at the familiar room, the memories of last night came rushing inside her mind.

Wasn’t this... that Prince’s room? Prince Aleister?

Esme’s jaw dropped.

The maids were so scared of him. What if he was not a decent man? What if he was planning to eat Leo as meat?

But he was talking to him like they were familiar. There was no way he would do anything to Leo.

They were guests here after all.

Esme nodded to herself.

But her self-persuasion turned into dust when she heard the man’s voice, ’’I never had a high-grade beast’s meat for dinner before this. The fire is ready. Are you...?"

His words were yet to finish when Esme stepped inside the room, ’’What do you mean by that?" her voice rose as the anger consumed her.

She circled the dining table arranged in his room and picked Leo up from the table.

Aleister glanced at her quietly.

Esme glared at the man. The audacity of him.

Luciana had told her countless times that Leo might not be some ordinary beast but she did not expect the people in heaven to eye her child.

She hugged him protectively.

Aleister pointed his chin towards the table, ’’A snow deer... for Leo.’’

Esme followed his gaze and glanced at the table. Her expression relaxed but she still held Leo protectively, ’’How do you know he is Leo?... How do you know his name?" she corrected her question.

’’He told me,’’ Aleister pushed himself to his feet.

Esme’s lips twitched. Leo told him? Was he being funny?

But then, she realized that Luciana knew this man so maybe she was the one who told him.

’’Then... Your Highness, forgive us for intruding on your dinner. We are leaving,’’ she turned around to leave.

There was no way she was spending another moment in this man’s presence.

His presence was oddly unnerving for some reason.

’’Stop right there.’’

Esme jolted. She opened her mouth to speak, ’’What happened yesterday was all my fault. I lied to you because I was unsure of who I offended. Since you forgave me, I believe you won’t be petty enough to hold it against me. I will take my leave now, My Lord,’’ she spoke in one breath, still facing her back towards him.

’’But I am just that petty, My Lady.’’

Esme’s footsteps halted again when she heard his words. She was certain that she heard his smile in his words.

’’Then what do you want?’’ Esme turned around,’’...so that you can forgive me?"

Since he had not killed her so far, she was certain that he was interested in toying with her. Or maybe, it was entertaining to him to play around.

He also pretended to be his father yesterday but was she holding a grudge over that?

’’Eat with me,’’ he said.

’Eat with me.’

Three simple words but her heart twisted in a way that made it hard for her to breathe.

’Let’s just sit together and eat in the dark, let’s fight with each other all the time, let’s argue...let’s be mad at each other but don’t leave. Whatever you want, however you want, I will agree to it. Just stay. Don’t leave me...’

Esme stumbled a few steps back as the strange words echoed in her mind.

Leo jumped off her arms and sprinted towards Aleister’s bed before sleeping on it.

Esme clutched her head as it felt like her head was splitting. Her heart ached. Terribly.

’’Are you fine?"

Esme flinched when she felt a warmth on her shoulders.

She tilted her head and glanced at the man who had his palms placed on her shoulders, concern apparent in his eyes.

The pain gradually lessened.

Esme glanced at him in a daze, ’’Do I know you?" her words were spoken barely in a whisper.

Aleister’s grip on her shoulders loosened.

He knew. He expected this. But hearing it from her mouth did not hurt any less.

All their time together was erased from her existence.

The woman who knew him the best in the world was asking him whether she knew him.

And he had to say... ’’No, you don’t,’’ Aleister smiled, stepping back from her, ’’Would you like to know me?"

’’No, I won’t,’’ Esme took a step back from him, just like he did.

She inhaled a deep breath. It was strange. Everything was strange, including this man in front of her.

Back in the night court, Luciana mumbled ’You will kill me if you regain your memories,’ when she asked the woman whether this man was her previous lover or something.

Why was that? Did she know him too?

But why would he say that she did not know him if they were familiar with each other?

Esme shook her head. Despite deciding to not dwell on the past, she was once again going there.

No. She had to put the past behind her if she wanted to live in peace.

The various voices in her head, the bits, and pieces of memories that did not make any sense would make her crazy otherwise.

’’My Lord...’’ Esme tilted her head to look at him, a determined glint flashed in her eyes, ’’I know what I did yesterday was wrong. I should not have lied to you. You want me to eat with you here? I don’t want to do that,’’ she took another step back.

’’Why not?"

’’Because it is unreasonable and unnecessary. A high Lord like you can have any woman sit and eat with him. And I don’t even know what you will get from eating with me. I don’t want to eat with a man whose motives are clearly unclear.’’

The man glanced at her quietly, even patiently.

Esme gulped the ball of resistance in her throat as she tilted her chin, ’’If you can not forgive me for yesterday, then kill me. But if you decide to let me go now, then don’t hold a grudge over it,’’ she whispered before closing her eyes.
