Ensnaring his Dark Moon-Chapter 312: Identity?
The curtains moved and a shadow leaped in through the window.
’’Es...’’ That very same gentle voice and handsome face yet Esme’s blood turned cold at the sight of the person standing in front of her.
How long had Jeremiah been here?
She was too distracted to notice his presence.
Masking her emotions, she put a soft smile on her face, thanking her ancestors that she had not used her powers to arrange flowers for Aleister yet, ’’Jer..’’ her deliberately shy voice made her inwardly break out in goosebumps but Esme did not let it show.
Jeremiah’s smile turned wider, ’’What are you doing here?"
’’I was here to meet the Prince on the King’s order. Since he was not around, I decided to wait for him. But he has yet to arrive so I decided to leave,’’ she said without a change in her expression.
Jeremiah nodded, not probing further regarding why the King ordered her to meet Aleister and wait for him, especially on his ’bed’.
’’We are getting married tomorrow.’’
Esme lowered her head like a shy bride.
’’Come with me, Es. I have prepared something for you,’’ he extended his hand towards her.
But Esme simply walked to his side, looking like she had not noticed his hand, an excited expression appeared on her face, ’’What is it? Tell me...’’
He did not give her a chance to finish her words before he picked her up in his arms and swiftly jumped out of the window, moving in the direction of the forest behind the Crystal Castle.
Esme’s eyes darkened as her hand moved to his neck, a small dagger materializing at the tip of her finger.
Stab him.
The urge to act on impulse overwhelmed her, his touch disgusting her beyond reason.
’’I want to talk to you about your origin.’’
Her hand paused, inches away from his neck as she masked the murderous intent in her eyes and looked at him curiously, ’’Oh? Did you find something? Quickly, tell me.’’
’’Patience, Es,’’ Jeremiah smiled.
What games was he playing now? Esme narrowed her eyes.
He took her to the middle of the forest before putting her down to her feet.
Esme had nothing to fear as she looked at the desolate surroundings shrouded in darkness. First, she had no idea of how powerful he was and if she could defeat him but she believed that she could escape with her abilities. And secondly, she did not doubt that he would bring her to this isolated place to kill her. There must be something that he wanted from her or else he would not have tried to marry her so desperately and now that there was one day for his much-desired marriage, there was no way he would try to kill and risk his position.
So, she stood there relaxed, pretending to be curious and excited about what he was going to show her.
Jeremiah smiled.
It was so dark they could not see each other.
In the next second, Esme’s ear caught the sound of the dried leaves being crushed under Jeremiah’s foot as took a step closer to her.
’Swish’
A glint reflected on her face as Jeremiah moved in a flash.
Esme dodged his attack without a second thought and pointed her finger at him, a streak of fire shooting towards his forehead.
But as if he had already expected it, Jeremiah dodged it.
The tall trees behind him caught fire as they burned, illuminating the vicious look on his face.
"As expected... As expected...’’ he laughed maniacally and the abnormal-looking black sword disappeared from his hand.
Esme glanced at him indifferently as she knew there was no point in pretending anymore.
When he stopped laughing, he looked at her in amusement, ’’I took you for a kitten, never once realizing that you have been hiding your claws. But it is not bad this way, you are making it all more interesting.’’
Esme did not say anything. At this moment, any shred of pretense that he had held onto before was long gone. His gentle expressions were replaced by sheer viciousness.
Jeremiah looked at her like he was looking at a toy, ’’That day when I saw the fire and was affected by it, I had my suspicions but that King appeared out of nowhere, claiming that those were his powers,’’ he clicked his tongue, ’’Although I believed it in the spur of the moment, but I gave it another thought. That mortal king... how could he affect my black magic? I have cultivated myself for years and if not for the rules of the sea, I would long have shoved that puny King down his throne.’’
Esme narrowed her eyes when he stepped towards her.
’’But then, I have never put that King in my eye, let alone you. If that fire did not belong to him, how could it belong to you, a powerless girl who has no idea how to use her abilities or what abilities you have in the first place? I found it bizarre and I could not stop thinking about it until it dawned on me...’’ Jeremiah smirked, ’’...that you must have long regained your memories.’’
’’So?"
"So, my dear bride, it all made sense to me. Regardless of how mighty Aleister is, I had nothing to fear as long as you did not remember him. You are too stubbornly loyal and as long as I made you believe you were mine, you would believe it, not having a single thought of betraying me no matter what your instincts told you.
But you regained your memories. What’s more... surprisingly, you did not die after that. It is a rare incident when a half mer half human like you does not lose her life immediately upon regaining the lost memories.’’
Esme nodded, ’’So what do you think is the reason I did not die after regaining my memories?"
’’What’s there to think? It is that lover of yours again. He must have a hand in it, just like that fire. Has he imparted some heavenly treasure to you?’’ Jeremiah raised an eyebrow. He knew the special identities of Cardan and Aleister and he was aware that they were not mortals but immortal princes who had descended from heaven so it was not hard to believe that Esme must have gotten her hand on some mystic artifact for her to survive through the ordeal of her memories and having gained a powerful fire.
Mers were intolerant of fire so Jeremiah refused to believe that any mer would have the ability to control such a fierce fire. He believed it had something to do with some artifact.
As Esme nodded, Jeremiah believed that his intuition was right.
Looking at the smug expression on his face, Esme sneered, ’’No matter how I look at you, you look like an idiotic man.’’
What was her father thinking when he made him the heir apparent?
Jeremiah’s face darkened, ’’You...’’
’’Shh, do not bark,’’ Esme frowned, ’’You have yet to tell me a few things I am curious about.’’
Jeremiah’s eyes glinted viciously when he heard her words but he suddenly realized that the game was under his control. There was nothing for him to be offended about, ’’Ask,’’ he said in a rare good mood.
’’Back then, you told me we met when you were young. You manipulated me into believing that we did have a past when in truth, I had experienced all those things with Aleister. Later, you apologized for lying but I want to know the truth behind it.’’
Jeremiah laughed when he heard that but there was no mirth in those eyes that chilled at her words, ’’Isn’t it because of you and Luciana?" he noticed her face was still unchanged as he continued speaking, ’’Do you think I won’t know about those unusual dreams you used to have? You both made everyone believe that you just feel sick for not being able to sleep properly yet you were painted a man’s eyes the next day. Did you take me for a fool?’’
Esme glanced at him coldly.
’’I never thought that you would regain your memories but I was afraid you would have visions. Some of the mers have the ability of vision. They can look way back into the past and some special ones can see glimpses of the future. Since your powers had yet to be awakened, I was worried that you will have that ability.’’
’’So, you tried to manipulate my visions by putting yourself in Aleister’s place?" As he smiled sinisterly, Esme did not need an affirmation of that. Unfortunately for him, she did not have that ability so his trick did not work on her.
’’Surely, I overestimated you. You are pretty useless if not for that face and identity.’’
Identity?
Esme’s brows tugged together. For some reason, she felt that his words were related to the other question she wanted to ask him, ’’Why do you want to marry me?"
Why did he have to go to such an extent just to marry her? She could still figure out the rest of the things but that was the only thing she could not understand. Jeremiah laid such an intricate plan, he waited for such a long time and schemed so much just to get married to her when it was apparent that he despised her. Just what would he stand to gain from this marriage? What identity was he speaking of? 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢
Esme had a feeling that many of her unanswered questions could be answered by Jeremiah but she was afraid that it would not be easy to squeeze answers out of him.
