Entangled in the Night: Unable to Escape Him-Chapter 123: Chloe Nash Is Leaving Him
Silas lit a cigarette and took several deep drags in a row, but the heavy nicotine couldn’t suppress the anger smoldering inside him.
Just now, he almost lost all reason, pulling Chloe into his arms and punishing her the way he’d punished Sienna.
But in the end, his rationality reined in his impulses.
Because he was afraid—afraid Chloe would leave him like Sienna had, never to return.
He didn’t want to lose the sliver of a lead he’d only just found.
Silas had no idea how many cigarettes he smoked before his emotions finally calmed down.
He took out his phone and called his assistant, Owen Paxton.
"I just told you to cause Albie Kane a little trouble—who told you to bankrupt him?"
Upon hearing this, Owen broke out in a cold sweat.
"President Prescott, I wouldn’t dare go against your orders, even if it killed me! I only had people leak a little water into his warehouse and delay a batch of goods. Afterwards, to make up for it, I even got that supplier to increase their order. I definitely didn’t bankrupt him!"
Hearing this, Silas finally sensed something was off.
Owen had been with him for ten years; he’d never done anything behind his back.
So, someone must have used them to deliberately give Albie trouble.
But what was the purpose?
And who was pulling the strings?
In Silas’s dark eyes flashed a chill: "Find out who’s behind this mess."
"Yes, I’ll look into it right away."
After hanging up, Silas picked up the wine glass Chloe had just used, staring at the red lipstick mark on the rim.
He muttered in a low voice: "Chloe, you wronged me—shouldn’t you apologize to me?"
Just imagining Chloe standing before him, meekly apologizing, was enough to sweep away all his pent-up anger.
He gently stroked the lipstick mark with his fingertip, chuckling, "Chloe, just how should I punish you then?"
He poured a bit more wine into the glass.
Swirled it around a few times, then pressed his lips to the print, tipping back the glass to drink it dry.
He even sampled every single dish Chloe had ordered for him.
She’d finally treated him to a meal—he couldn’t let it go to waste.
When he got home, Old Master Prescott and Julian were playing Go.
The little one’s skills had soared—after placing the final black stone, he clapped his small hands. "Great-grandpa, I won!"
Old Master Prescott grinned, patting his head. "This child has quite a gift. He’s only been learning with me for a little while and can already beat me. As smart as Sienna."
Silas sat beside them, eyeing the board. "So what, does that mean I’m the dummy?"
Old Master Prescott snorted, "If you weren’t a dummy, you would’ve been married by now! Old Man Sawyer’s grandson earned three degrees and already has two great-grandsons and a great-granddaughter. I only have Julian as my sole great-grandchild, and I haven’t even glimpsed a granddaughter-in-law. I want a sweet, cute great-granddaughter too!"
"Don’t you have another grandson? Have him give you one then."
"Don’t think you can dump the responsibility. As Prescott Group’s heir, you’re still not married. The shareholders are bound to question you! Aren’t you worried they’ll use this as ammunition to help Damien steal your position?"
Silas gave a nonchalant smile. "If they can, let them try—I’m not afraid."
"Don’t say I didn’t warn you. Damien’s back from abroad, your father arranged for him to enter the company. I can’t block it. You should know exactly what they’re up to."
"Don’t worry. I know what I’m doing."
While they chatted, Julian’s smart watch suddenly rang.
He’d been quiet before, but when he saw the caller ID, his eyes lit up.
He immediately hit the answer button, calling out affectionately, "Mom!"
On the other end, Chloe’s voice came through: "Julian, mommy has a lot of surgeries these days and can’t take care of you right now. When I’m finished, I’ll take you to Zendara, okay?"
Julian’s little mouth broke into a grin. "Okay, okay! Love you, mommy! Don’t overwork, Julian worries about you."
"My darling, with you saying that, mommy’s not tired at all. Have you been good today, and recited your poems nicely?"
"Yep! I even recorded it and sent it to mommy to hear."
"Julian, you’re awesome! After summer break, you can go to kindergarten just like Fries, play with friends—aren’t you excited?"
Julian nodded his little head like a bobblehead. "Mm-hmm! Go to kindergarten, have a girlfriend, just like Fries."
The two chatted affectionately, ignoring everyone else.
Silas suddenly found himself a bit annoyed.
Chloe called Julian but didn’t care about him at all.
Didn’t she realize she’d wronged an innocent man?
Never mind. He’d wait a few more days. Once Albie got through this crisis, he doubted Chloe wouldn’t come to apologize.
Old Master Prescott noticed Silas eavesdropping and rapped him on the head.
"Even your son’s better than you! He’s already got a girlfriend, and you? Can’t find Sienna, can’t win Chloe—useless!"
The old man kicked him in disgust and stormed into the bedroom.
Silas gave a meaningful little laugh. "Almost found her."
He feigned faintness, sprawled on the sofa, and turned to Julian: "Julian, daddy thinks he has a fever—go get me a doctor."
Julian had been chatting away with Chloe, but when he heard this, his big dark eyes flashed.
He put his hand on Silas’s forehead for a moment.
"Not hot at all. You just want to trick mommy into coming to see you."
Having his own son expose him left Silas feeling more than a little embarrassed.
He smacked Julian’s little bottom in mock anger. "You little traitor! If I can’t win your mommy, what will you do then?"
Julian replied with indifference, "No need for you to win—mommy’s mine."
He got up, toddled upstairs on his short legs, and went to send Chloe his poetry recitation video.
Watching his son treat him like this, Silas let out a quiet laugh.
"When I find your mommy, I’ll make sure you don’t see her for a whole day."
Chloe heard Silas’s voice and immediately hung up on Julian.
She didn’t want to speak to that madman.
After setting down her phone, she wandered into the living room, where Mrs. Nash stood in front of a mirror, turning this way and that.
"Chloe, come here and see—does this outfit look nice on me? Aren’t these bright colors perfect for a photo?"
Seeing her mother so happy gave Chloe a touch of relief.
Her arrival had brightened their moods considerably.
She walked over, sized her mother up, and smiled, "You look wonderful. Honestly ten years younger. When I go out with you, people will think we’re sisters."
Mrs. Nash beamed, then looked at Mr. North, "Haha, I look so young—if I travel with your dad, will people think we’re father and daughter?"
Mr. North chuckled, "Whatever you say is right, okay?"
Seeing Mrs. Nash finally let go of the past and not wash her face with tears every day, Mr. North felt relieved as well.
Chloe wrapped her arms around her parents’ shoulders and earnestly reminded them, "Mom, Dad, I can’t go traveling with you this time, so please be careful. Don’t go anywhere dangerous."
"Don’t worry! We’re with colleagues and neighbors—the seniors group. No way will we go anywhere risky, so just relax."
"Okay, I’ll drop you off at the airport tomorrow morning."
Early the next morning.
Silas stood downstairs from Chloe’s apartment building, waiting for her. He had to set things straight and tell her the Albie incident wasn’t his doing.
He waited a long time before finally seeing Chloe appear.
Just as Silas was about to walk over, he saw Chloe dragging two large suitcases behind her.
The sight immediately transported him back five years.
That day, Sienna had run away with her luggage.
Every nerve in Silas’s body instantly went taut, his gaze turning dangerous.
Was Chloe—because of Albie—planning to leave him and Julian behind?
