Chapter 588: Rest A While

In another part of the city, Ray sat atop the remains of a massive building he had personally destroyed. π™§π™šπ™šπ”€π’†π“«π“·π™€π“Ώπ’†π™‘.𝒄𝙀𝓢

The structure was no longer recognizable as a building. Its upper floors had collapsed inward, concrete crushed into jagged layers, and the steel beams twisted like broken bones.

Smoke still drifted upward from the wreckage.

Ray himself was far from unscathed right now.

His armor was cracked and torn. Deep cuts ran across his torso, some of the wounds were still bleeding. His breathing was uneven. His left arm hung at an unnatural angle because it had broken badly enough that the bone had nearly pierced through flesh.

But Ray was smiling.

In his right hand, he held his Demon sword. Its surface was slick with dark, half-dried blood, the blade pulsing as if alive.

The killing had already ended minutes ago.

Bodies of humans lay scattered across the ruined buildings below who had been unlucky enough to be nearby when Ray needed blood after the battle.

Without hesitation, Ray drove the sword down and let its tip drink from the pooled blood beneath him.

The blade reacted immediately.

The blood crawled upward along the metal, sinking into the sword as if being inhaled. A low wet hum echoed through the air. Warmth surged back through Ray’s arm and into his body.

His broken left arm twitched. The bone shifted, the flesh pulled itself together with sickening sounds.

Tendons reattached, skin sealed over fractures, and within seconds, the arm straightened. Fully healed.

Ray flexed his fingers and laughed softly.

"Heheh. That works fast."

But when he looked down at the rest of his body, his smile faded slightly.

The deeper wounds on his chest and sides had only partially closed. The bleeding slowed, but the damage remained.

It was still not enough.

Ray stood up and scanned the area.

There was no blood left on the building itself. No more victims nearby. The city’s madness had already claimed most of the people who had been here. They were crushed, swallowed, or erased by the moving structures.

Humans were becoming scarce.

Ray clicked his tongue in irritation.

"So annoying."

He jumped off the ruined building and crashed into the street below. The ground cracked under his landing, but he barely felt it.

He started walking.

Whenever he spotted a pool of blood along the way, he stopped and pressed the Demon sword into it. The blade absorbed what little remained, slowly knitting more of his wounds together.

Still not enough.

Ray kept moving.

The city around him was quieter now. Buildings had stopped moving after the scenario ended, leaving behind a graveyard of destruction.

Corpses were scattered everywhere, but most had already gone dry.

Ray frowned.

"Where should we go next?" he asked casually, glancing down at the sword.

"I have sensed an incredible target to the east." The Demon sword replied, its voice echoing directly inside his mind.

Ray’s eyes lit up.

"Incredible target?" he asked, grinning savagely. "What do you mean by that?"

The sword answered without hesitation.

"It is a player. A strong one. The player also possesses a Demon sword."

Ray laughed, the sound sharp and delighted.

"Ohoho. Is that so?" He lifted the blade and admired its surface. "Then I definitely want to meet them."

His grin widened.

"Maybe we can be friends. Heheheh."

With that, Ray turned east and began moving again.

Buildings that were still alive remnants of the scenarios blocked his path were torn apart without mercy. Walls shattered. Entire structures collapsed under his blows. Every kill and every destruction pushed his level higher.

By the time he vanished into the distance, his status had climbed.

He was now Level 60.

Back near the former safe zone, Clyde finally stood up.

The moment he did, his stomach growled loudly.

He scowled.

"Damn it," he muttered. "I hate that we still need food in this situation."

Mina sighed beside him and nodded in full agreement. She pressed a hand against her stomach.

"Yeah. I hate it too," she said. "I’m starving."

She looked around at the ruined streets.

"Where the hell do we even find food under all this rubble?"

Clyde followed her gaze.

The city had stopped moving now that the scenario had ended. Buildings lay broken and twisted, storefronts smashed open or buried under debris.

"There," Clyde said after a moment. "Let’s find it in that store. Maybe something survived."

Mina grimaced but nodded.

"Yeah. Okay. Not like we have a better option."

They moved together, exiting the safe zone and heading deeper into the ruined district.

After a while, they found what used to be a convenience store.

The front was caved in. Shelves were toppled. Glass crunched under their boots as they stepped inside.

Food was scattered everywhere.

Most of it was smashed. They saw crushed packages, broken cans, and ruined containers. But some items were still intact, buried under debris or wedged between fallen shelves.

Mina crouched down and picked up a half-crushed package, inspecting it.

"...We’re really doing this, huh."

Clyde nodded.

"We don’t get to be picky."

They gathered what they could. Intact food first, then whatever smashed supplies were still usable.

It wasn’t much. But it was enough to survive for now.

Clyde and Mina were still eating.

The Fourth Scenario did not begin immediately. No countdown appeared or announcements echoed through the sky. It was as if the World Master had decided to grant them a moment of rest.

That alone felt wrong.

The city around them was too quiet now. Even the wind felt muted, as if the air itself was holding its breath. The silence pressed in from all sides, thick and unnatural.

Clyde sat with his back against a cracked wall, chewing slowly. Mina sat across from him, her knees drawn up slightly as she ate from a battered package of rations.

Neither of them spoke.

They had learned not to relax completely. Even while eating, their eyes kept moving, scanning around. Their bodies remained tense, ready to move at the first sign of danger.

Minutes passed. The silence did not break.

After a while, Mina frowned and lowered her food.

"This is weird," she said quietly.

Clyde swallowed and nodded.

"Yeah."

An hour passed. Still nothing.

The longer it lasted, the worse it felt.

A sense of unease crept in slowly, crawling under their skin. Not fear exactly, but something heavier. Ominous.
