Chapter 42: Divine Trait

It almost felt right to think in that manner because this Divine Fragment was a shattered, broken thing. Why was it lying around in an Elder-rank monster? Or was it because the Palebranch Kage had deep ties to the woods?

Lucien remembered the delicate design of its bone and how tough it was—the entire trees of Ossyn Woods themselves made him question what the hell the region itself was.

Was this the region where the Verdant Apostate died, or was this the place he was buried? Perhaps this was where he battled the Hollow God.

’The Hollow God...’

That was another topic entirely—a sinister premonition that reminded Lucien of what he saw in the Ashen Hollow.

He covered his face with both palms and exhaled. He was grinning wildly, utterly ecstatic.

Not just the rewards, but the promise of the future. Nothing was going to be boring! The thought thrilled him. He was thinking about the countless adventures that awaited him.

He wasn’t going to go as far as battling gods, but he sure as hell was going to explore every damn thing that existed in this game world. He would conquer it...

He paused his thought process.

’Nah, I don’t think I’d want to finish anything.’

Lucien nodded.

’It’s better to be trapped in a loop of this—one that keeps getting better, though.’

And that was Evolution Online. It just kept getting better!

Lucien exhaled and studied the bone again.

On the forum, it was said that Divine Fragments were integrated by swallowing them. It was said that the change was a gradual process—as time passed, you continued to be revealed to all the abilities it listed out.

So most likely, all those abilities it listed out were not going to be a one-time thing; it was going to be a gradual process. The blog post also mentioned that there was immense pain when consuming them, that it was advisable for players who wanted to integrate with a Divine Fragment to reduce their pain sensitivity.

However, Lucien had a wild idea in his head—a bold notion that he could skip all that gradual process of his body registering the abilities.

He didn’t know how long it would take to reach the full accumulation of all these abilities he saw. Besides, he didn’t even know how the process worked for players. But fusing with it was bound to bring a different result.

Lucien narrowed his eyes and focused on the bone.

"Fuse..."

[Do you want to Fuse with Divine material for 1,000 Fusion points?]

’One thousand?’

He had honestly expected an enormous amount like a hundred thousand! Why the hell was it just one thousand?

’I hope it’s not that I’ll be fusing with an ordinary bone and losing all the incredible abilities of the Divine Fragment.’

A thread of fear crept into Lucien’s mind, and it was understandable because the price was just too cheap.

However, he sighed.

’I have two more. Let’s take a leap of faith.’

Light poured out of Lucien’s palm and consumed the bone. Lucien closed his eyes, waiting for whatever was going to happen—the pain that was going to hit him—but nothing happened. All he heard was the system’s resonant voice.

[You have fused with a Divine material]

[You have acquired Trait: White Surface (Unique - Passive): The surface of your skin has gained an alabaster hue, earning it a surface that is almost as tough as the palebranch trees that grew out of the Verdant Apostate’s fossilized body.]

Lucien paused. The new trait was incredible, but what did it say at the end?

’The trees grew from his body?’

Before Lucien could pursue his thought further, a vicious storm of pain assaulted his entire body. He froze, trembling—his insides felt scorching hot, and the scenery blurred, spinning wildly.

[Fusion is transforming every bone structure in your body.]

The pain intensified, driving him to his knees. He stifled a groan that threatened to escape his mouth, terrified of alerting anything that could destroy him in this moment of vulnerability.

He pressed his palms against the hot rocky ground, trying to endure the agony as something writhed through his body.

He could hear and feel subtle cracks, as though his bones were being twisted from within. He tried to endure, tried to stay conscious. But the pain only intensified and grew worse.

So excruciating that he collapsed to the ground, drool spilling from his mouth, his eyes barely struggling to stay open.

But the pain was too intense and finally overwhelmed him. His eyes slowly dimmed, and his consciousness faded away.

[Congratulations, you have successfully fused with a Divine Fragment]

[You are a step closer to the Origin]

[YOU HAVE GAINED A DIVINE TRAIT: HOLLOWBONE]

Lucien’s eyes suddenly snapped open. He bolted upright, sweating and breathing hard, his chest heaving, shoulders rising and falling.

It took a moment for him to realize that he was in an enclosure. Immediately, a frown creased his face.

The place was dim but not dark enough. He could still see—the room had a familiar air. He had been sleeping in something very similar before the Godzilla suddenly appeared and ruined his peaceful time.

The walls were constructed with thick bamboo wood, and every piece of furniture in the place seemed to be of the same material. Despite that, they were all finely crafted with no rough edges—it was as though sci-fi had decided to manifest with an ancient theme.

Lucien looked toward the bedside where he had just propped himself up.

The first thing he saw was cascading, lustrous silver hair that glittered radiantly with the little light that seeped in through the small window of the enclosure.

His brows furrowed suspiciously as he observed her. Her face was covered, and she was wearing a flowing brown, slightly transparent dress. The one thing that caught Lucien’s attention, though, were her ears.

They were quite long.
