Evolving Infinitely From An E-Class Hero-Chapter 99: Hold The Line
Crack!
It started with the sickening cracking of bones. Then came the scanty fur. Black, spaced across the skin in patches and steaming like it had just been boiled.
Then came the pale, blue skin.
Fifteen men collapsed to the grassy floor, convulsing as their body twisted and wraped unnaturally.
Their arms lengthening, jaws distorting, claws tearing through skin like paper. Then —
Shrreeeeeeeeeekkkkkkkkkkkkk!
The whole area erupted into shrieks as the newly formed Calamity Creatures lunged at the direction Bakuzan pointed at.
They raced like a your everyday pack of wolves, but were stronger, faster and several times more vicious than any regular wolf.
In a matter of seconds, they had already arrived at were the civilians took refuge against the trees of the forest.
One tore through a woman’s throat in a single bite. Blood sprayed in flying arcs. Another dragged a screaming man across the grassy, dirt-covered floor by the leg, his fingernails ripping off as he clawed and clawed against the Calamity Creatures will.
A mother and her child tried to run, but one of the creatures burst through the bunch of shrubs behind them, tackling her to the ground and gnawing at her face.
The child screamed as the monster feasted on her mother. And not before long, the little child met the same faith.
Chaos!
Then—
Bzzt!
Crack!
Thunderlash appeared in a flash of blue spark.
"You’re in the way!" He barked at the nearest civilians, whipping a whip of electricity through three of the Calamity Creature.
Their bodies convulsed, steaming and sizzling violently but they didn’t die or disintegrate.
They shook it off and rose again with their snarling jaws.
"Dammit... I’m nearly out of power after using my Supreme Skill!".
Then, a streak of cold air followed. Ice Blast skated into the chaos, flinging a hail of jagged ice shards that embedded themselves into the creature’s legs and side.
One Calamity Creature lunged for her face. Swish! She twisted, raised a frozen wall and then—
Slam!
It crashed against the creature.
"These type don’t go down easy!" She yelled.
"They keep getting stronger and stronger!" Thunderlash growled, dodging a swipe and countering with a brutal electrified kick to a creature skull. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝔀𝓮𝒃𝙣𝓸𝒗𝒆𝒍.𝙘𝒐𝒎
Bash!
It’s head caved in.
"We need to slow them down!"
Ice Blast raised both arms, inhaled sharply, and unleashed a wave of sub zero frost that blankets the floor, freezing three Calamity Creatures legs in place.
Thunderlash followed up instantly, hurling a lightning whip that pinned one to a tree and then transferred a surge of current through the length of his whip causing the creature to burst in a shower of sparks and brain matter.
Still, more of them came with even more viciousness.
One of the Calamity Creatures lunged at a young couple cowering behind a dead log.
Ice Blast noticed and shot forward on a frozen rail, spun midair, and skewered it through the spine with a frozen spike.
Thunderlash moved like lightning, grabbing two Calamity Creatures by the throat and frying them until their twitching bodies smoked in death.
They fought in sync, like titans. But the Calamity Creatures kept coming with rabid, feral and fast instinct.
Both of their breathing grew heavier by the second, especially Thunderlash after being involved in two gruesome battles prior he was only operating on instinct and pure will.
"I don’t think we can hold them off forever...!" Ice Blast yelled as she shot a blast of ice shards towards the creatures, to which they swiftly evaded with ease.
"We don’t need forever," Thunderlash muttered. "We just need to keep them busy until back up arrives or we can just stick it out a s kill every last one of them, even if it’s the last thing we do."
Another creature lunged.
Thunderlash caught it in mid air with a lightning whip, yanked it down and crushed its throat with his boot.
His boot cracked down on the twitching creature’s neck— but it didn’t stay down.
It’s broken spine spasmed and twisted, them with a sickening pop, realigned itself. The creature’s jaw snapped open, its molten eyes glaring up at him with killing intent.
"What the hell?!" He cursed, leaping backward as the wolf sprang again.
"Devon! behind you!" Ice Blast cried out.
But it was too late.
Crunch!
Another creature crept up from his blind spot and bit deep into his arm, sinking its teeth through the protective layer of his suit.
"Argghhh!", Thunderlash grunted in pain as he lost control of his whip and lightning sparks flew each and every way in wild arcs, eventually frying the beast off him.
But the damage was done, blood trickled down his fingers and unto the grassy floor.
Ice Blast lunched a volley of ice javelins, impaling two of the creatures before skidding across the frozen floor to support him.
"This things don’t go down easy..." She panted. "Are you okay?" She asked while helping him climb to his feet.
The whole area was a massacre.
Civilians lay scattered — ripped, torn beyond recognition. A dozen train officers were either dead or hiding with their useless weapons. The Calamity Creatures had overrun the full length of the train and more poured from the other side of the forest.
"Damn it all!" Thunderlash screamed out of frustration, while clutching his injured arm.
Ice Blast formed a thick wall of ice between them and the beasts.
The creatures followed up instantly, hitting and banging against the wall.
"I can’t hold it!"
It cracked. One beast hurled itself through, shattering the barrier into freezing mist. She immediately threw up her arms, catching the creature’s claws against a braced shield of frost. Her knees buckled as she skidd on the ice beneath her.
Thunderlash roared and tackled the creature off her despite the unimaginable pain he was going through. Both of them crashed into a bush nearby.
"Devon! We’re not gonna win this if we keep holding back" Ice Blast said, her voice trembling not from fear, but exhaustion.
"I know," he said, electricity sparking widely across his bloodied body. "We need to fall back, lead them away from the civilians somehow!"
Suddenly, two creatures leapt from opposite ends.
Thunderlash ducked—barely—but one swiped his back, leaving a deep, sizzling gash. He dropped to one knee.
"Thunder!"
Before Ice Blast could react, a third one pounced—biting down on her shoulder. She screamed, blasting a desperate ice spike into its skull, but even that didn’t kill it. It thrashed, tore her icy skin, and only let go when Thunderlash electrified it into momentary paralysis.
They were surrounded now.
Ten, maybe twelve wolf-like Calamity Creatures circled them, snarling.
Bloody. Grinning. Hungry.
Thunderlash stood over Ice Blast, panting. Blood dripped from his body.
"So this is how it ends?" he said with a dark grin. "Chewed up by mutts?"
Ice Blast laughed weakly. "Not yet... Look up there, backup has arrived..."
