Chapter 89: Chapter

I looked at the girl again, this time more carefully.

She did not look like someone who had just arrived.

There was a certain ease in the way she stood, the way she spoke, and even how she handled that meat seller without hesitation.

"You said you are from Unit 50?" I asked.

She nodded quickly, her smile still bright.

"Yes," she said. "I have been there for a while now."

Her eyes moved between me and Fu Sheng.

"You two are new, right? I could tell immediately."

Fu Sheng spoke calmly.

"We arrived today."

An Li’s eyes lit up slightly.

"I knew it," she said. "No wonder that woman tried to cheat you. She always targets new people."

She folded her arms and shook her head.

"If I had come a little later, she would have taken your money without blinking."

I let out a small breath.

"Then we were lucky you came when you did."

She grinned.

"Of course you were."

There was no modesty in her tone, but it did not feel annoying.

Just... straightforward.

I liked that.

She then leaned slightly closer, lowering her voice just a little.

"If you are staying in Unit 50, you need to be careful," she said.

"This place may look normal, but not everyone is honest."

Her gaze shifted briefly toward the stalls around us.

"Prices are always higher for newcomers. Some people will even work together to cheat you."

Fu Sheng nodded slightly.

"We understand."

But An Li shook her head.

"No, you do not," she said simply. "Not yet."

She straightened again and smiled.

"But it is fine. You met me now."

She placed a hand on her chest proudly.

"I know this place well."

I raised a brow slightly.

"Oh?"

She nodded.

"If you need anything, you can ask me," she said. "I know where to buy things at the right price."

She then pointed toward another section of the market.

"For example, if you want vegetables, do not buy from the first row. Go deeper inside. It is cheaper there."

Her words were quick and natural, as if she had said them many times before.

I glanced at Fu Sheng.

He did not say anything, but I could tell—

He was listening carefully.

I looked back at her.

"That is helpful."

She smiled wider.

"I know."

Then she suddenly asked,

"Which house are you staying in?"

I paused for a moment.

Then I answered calmly,

"The larger one near the front."

Her eyes widened slightly.

"That one?"

She looked surprised.

"That is the best house in Unit 50."

Her gaze shifted again, this time with a bit more curiosity.

"You must have paid a lot."

I smiled faintly.

"Something like that."

She stared at me for a second longer, then laughed softly.

"Then I really need to stay on your good side."

Her tone was playful.

But her eyes were sharp.

She was not as simple as she looked.

I did not mind.

"Then start by helping us pick what we need," I said.

Her face brightened immediately.

"Of course."

She turned and started walking ahead of us.

"Come, I will show you the good places."

Fu Sheng pulled the wagon as we followed behind her.

As we walked, she continued talking.

"You said you need cooking things, right? There is a man two rows ahead. His things are old, but strong. He does not overcharge."

She pointed again.

"And for bedding, do not buy new ones unless you really have money. There is a place that sells used ones that are still clean."

I listened quietly.

At the same time—

My mind was working.

This was perfect.

With her talking and leading the way...

Fu Sheng’s attention was no longer fully on me.

Good.

As we passed through a slightly crowded section, I slowed down just a little.

"Wait," I said.

"You two go ahead. I will catch up."

Fu Sheng stopped immediately.

"I will stay—"

"It is fine," I said quickly. "I just want to check something here."

He hesitated.

An Li turned back.

"It is okay," she said. "I am here. I will not let him get cheated."

She sounded confiden.

Fu Sheng looked between us for a moment.

Then he nodded.

"I will wait ahead."

Good.

The moment they walked a few steps forward—

My expression changed slightly and I dragged the wagon from Fu Sheng.

"I want to get some things you guys go ahead."

"Huh? I’ll follow you." Fu Sheng was confused as he insisted on following me.

"Don’t worry I’ll be right back.. I really need to get something... just go lay her show you those things she’s yapping about."

Before Fu Sheng could still refuse.. i has already dragged the wagon and picked race leaving him stunned.

Quickly, I moved my hand into the wagon and dragged it towards an empty alley far from where eyes could see.

Taking a deep breathe, I focused on the wagon.

From my space, I began taking out items.

Dried grains.

Salt.

Oil.

A few preserved foods.

One after another, they appeared quietly inside the wagon, hidden beneath the blankets.

Within a few seconds, I was done... but I waited for about 10 minutes so I wouldn’t see suspicious.

I stepped back.

Perfect.

I walked forward and looked for them... soon i caught up with them... in no time ans saw them as I struggled to drag the items.

An Li was still talking.

"...and if you ever need water, there is a shared well behind the third row of houses. But you need to go early or it will be crowded."

I nodded.

"I understand."

Fu Sheng glanced at the wagon briefly.

Then back at me.

But he said nothing.

An Li slowed down and looked at the wagon.

Her eyes stayed on it for a moment before she spoke.

"...Did you not just start buying things?" she asked. "How did you already get so much?"

Fu Sheng also looked at the wagon.

I answered without hesitation.

"I bought some things earlier," I said calmly. "Before we met you."

I waved my hand slightly.

"I just did not carry everything at once."

My tone was steady and natural.

An Li looked at me for a moment, then nodded.

"Alright," she said. "That makes sense."

She did not ask again.

I moved on immediately.

"We still need a few more things," I said. "Firewood, fruits, and some small items."

I paused, then added,

"And something for the children."

An Li smiled.

"I know where to get those," she said.

She led the way again.

We walked through another part of the market. The stalls there were quieter, and the prices were more reasonable.

We bought firewood from an older man who did not try to overcharge.

Then we bought fruits.

They were not perfect, but they were fresh.

As we walked, I stopped at a small stall.

There were sweets arranged on a tray.

I picked a few.

"These are for the children," I said.

Fu Sheng looked at me, then at the sweets.

He did not say anything, but his expression softened.

We continued walking.

After a while, Fu Sheng stopped at another stall.

"I will get some tools," he said.

I looked at what he was pointing at.

There were simple tools laid out.

"For the beds," he added. "I will fix them."

I nodded.

"That is good."

He chose what he needed and paid.

An Li stood beside us, watching.

"You two are prepared," she said.

I smiled slightly.

"We have to be."

After we finished buying everything, we turned back toward Unit 50.

The wagon was now full.

As we walked back, I noticed something.

People were looking at us.

Not just passing glances.

They were staring.

Some were whispering.

I slowed down a little.

"Why are they looking at us like that?" I asked.

An Li did not look surprised.

"So it has already spread," she said.

I looked at her.

"What do you mean?"

She glanced at me.

"You really do not know?" she asked.

I shook my head.

She spoke calmly.

"The moment you brought out that gold bar earlier, everyone heard about it."

I blinked.

"That fast?"

She nodded.

"This place is small. News spreads quickly."

She continued,

"You were also given the best house."

Her tone became more serious.

"That alone is enough to make people talk."

I stayed quiet.

She looked ahead as she spoke.

"To them, you are no longer just new people."

"You are people with money."

She paused slightly.

"In a place like this, that can be good... or bad."

Fu Sheng’s grip on the wagon tightened a little.

I noticed it, but I did not say anything.

An Li continued,

"Some people will want to get close to you."

"Some will be jealous."

She did not continue further.

She did not need to.

I understood.

I let out a small breath.

"So that is why."

She nodded.

"Yes."

Then she added,

"You should be careful."

I gave a small smile.

"I will."

We entered Unit 50 again.
