Exploring Technology in a Wizard World-Chapter 644 - 642 Hold the Line!
Chapter 644: Chapter 642 Hold the Line!
Hoske Kingdom border, Maine City.
The heavy snow had intermittently fallen for three days and nights, causing countless houses in the city to collapse and the cries of the afflicted poor to be ceaseless, stirring annoyance in anyone who heard them.
However, as the Commander maintaining the safety of Maine City—General Murphy had no mood to be bothered by the disaster victims, since a more troubling matter was unfolding before his eyes.
On the city walls, Murphy, clad in full armor, wore a grave expression as he watched the soldiers lined up outside the walls, recognizing them as people from the Dorance Kingdom. At the same time, he also recognized his sworn enemy among the troops of Dorance—General McIntosh.
"McIntosh, what do you mean by this!" Murphy shouted angrily, his hand on the longsword at his waist, looking exceptionally furious, "Our two kingdoms have just signed an agreement. Are you planning to defy the will of our great Kings?"
Outside the city wall, a person in silver armor stepped forward, his triangular eyes appearing sinister, and he looked at Murphy and chuckled, "General Murphy, don’t be nervous. I have no intentions of breaking the agreement. I’m just here for a visit and to give you a little gift."
"A gift? What gift?" Murphy asked, furrowing his brows.
"Just this." As his opponent spoke, he slowly raised his hand as if to display something.
In the next moment, Murphy saw a dark glimmer shoot from the man’s arm towards him, followed by a sharp whooshing sound.
A Hand Crossbow!
Murphy was startled and quickly ducked. He heard the "swoosh" sound as the fired arrow grazed his helmet and flew up into the sky, disappearing without a trace.
Damn!
Having successfully dodged the sneak attack, both relief and rage surged in Murphy’s heart. He adjusted his helmet, slowly stood up in a ready-to-dodge posture, and glared at McIntosh, "McIntosh, you fool, have you gone mad?! How dare you launch a sneak attack on me, this is a declaration of war—do you understand that!"
Unexpectedly, seeing the sneak attack fail, a slightly disappointed McIntosh discarded the hidden hand crossbow and didn’t bother with him. He turned around and began commanding his army. At his command, numerous archers and crossbowmen started firing towards the city top.
"Whoosh, whoosh, whoosh!"
"Ah, ah, ah!"
There was hardly any time to react; instantly about a dozen defending soldiers on the city walls fell!
"Bastards!" Murphy’s eyes nearly burst with rage, completely baffled by McIntosh’s actions, but he did not wish to ponder any further. Since the enemy dared to attack and they were wrong first, he would strike back, letting them know that they were not to be trifled with!
"Everyone ready! Fire! Fire! Aim carefully at those Dorance people below, hit them hard, let them know we are not to be messed with!"
Murphy shouted, commanding the soldiers on the city walls to fire back at the soldiers from Dorance.
After a few minutes, both sides had casualties.
In theory, occupying the high ground should be advantageous for the city defenders, the soldiers of Maine City. The Dorance soldiers below the wall were at a disadvantage.
Indeed, that was the case.
However, due to the suddenness of the attack, Maine City was unprepared, and many soldiers were scattered around the city. The number of soldiers on the city walls was far fewer than those from Dorance. Given this situation, each injured soldier caused Murphy to bleed inwardly.
Minutes passed, and as Murphy saw his soldiers dwindling, he bit his teeth in frustration. He turned to look back at the city and saw no one coming to help, cursing bitterly, "All useless! The enemy is at our doorstep, and still, no one notices!"
In the next moment, unable to contain himself, Murphy grabbed a soldier and commanded loudly, "You, go into the city and inform Lord Barth about the situation here, tell him to send reinforcements. Additionally, it would be better if he could come personally."
"Yes!" The soldier dared not dawdle, and having heard Murphy’s words, he quickly ran down from the city wall to relay the orders.
Murphy watched as the messenger Soldier left and inwardly he felt a bit relieved. He glanced at the Dorance Soldiers outside preparing to set up their long ladders for the siege and scoffed to himself, "Just wait! Right now, you have the upper hand, but once the reinforcements arrive, I’ll make sure all of you are wiped out! And with Lord Barth coming, you’ll face an even worse fate!"
The reason Murphy held such confidence was that Lord Barth was no ordinary man, he was both the ruler of the city and a Level One Wizard. If he were to take action, dealing with a bunch of Soldiers who weren’t even fully equipped with armor would be a slaughter.
Murphy grabbed a Mechanical Crossbow and shot towards the Soldiers outside the city wall while trying to inflict damage and waiting patiently.
Time passed slowly, and Murphy started to grow impatient as there was no sign of the reinforcements.
After fiercely repelling another attempt by the enemy to scale the walls, Murphy grabbed another Soldier, yelled into his ear, "Go find Lord Barth again and tell him to send support immediately! We can hardly hold on here. If this continues, the enemy will definitely break through!"
"Yes, yes," the Soldier, nearly dumbfounded by Murphy’s shouting, nodded frantically like a pecking chicken, and hurried down the city wall towards the city.
Murphy continued to wait, gritting his teeth.
Before long, another half an hour had passed.
The city walls were littered with blood and corpses, having repelled countless attempts by Dorance Soldiers to scale them. The surviving Soldiers were all wounded.
Even Murphy himself had numerous cuts on his Armor.
He turned to look into the city and, seeing still no one coming to their aid, became infuriated, almost cursing loudly.
Could all the messengers sent have run off out of fear?
Or perhaps, had Lord Barth failed to grasp the severity of the situation?
No, that wasn’t right!
Murphy’s eyes sharpened, and his mind raced.
No, that wasn’t right at all!
If the Soldiers really were scared, where could they have run to? Moreover, it was unlikely that both Soldiers had run off out of fear, right?
While Lord Barth did indulge in pleasures, he could distinguish what was critical and what was not. He wouldn’t be muddle-headed.
Considering this, the fact that neither messenger had returned meant only one thing—something had gone wrong inside the city!
Yes, something had gone wrong inside the city!
Because something had happened inside, there had been no support until now, forcing him and the Soldiers on the city walls to fight desperately.
Realizing this, Murphy felt a chill run from his feet to the top of his head.
If that was indeed the case, Maine City was in danger!
This couldn’t continue; he had to go into the city and find out what was happening! At the very least, he had to find out what had happened to Lord Barth.
With this in mind, Murphy glared and shouted at the Soldiers on the walls, "Hold your ground! I’m going to call for reinforcements personally! Hold your ground; I’ll be back soon, and any of you who are still alive will be rewarded with ten silver coins each! Ten silver coins!"
With those words, Murphy, carrying his Longsword, quickly descended from the city wall and strode toward the city.
