Chapter 148: My Beloved Witch

After his torrid fuck with Merlin, Kaiser headed straight to his mansion to take a bath, then went to the academy library.

Inside, the contrast with the bustle of the other rooms was immediate. A silence enveloped the space, broken only by the soft rustle of turning pages and, intermittently, by the muffled murmur or discreet laughter of a few female students gathered in the distance. The air was thick with the characteristic smell of old paper.

Kaiser moved between the tall shelves.

After a brief scan, he selected a book: Demonic Magic. He took it, tucked it under his arm, and continued toward the back of the room. There, the rows of bookshelves formed a more intimate corner, isolated from the main aisles.

He chose a table flanked by two chairs. After settling in, he opened the book. The first pages presented complex diagrams.

A few minutes passed like that, in a calm undisturbed by any footsteps. A woman had approached.

Her slightly pointed ears protruded clearly from her short blonde hair, where a thick fringe fell, almost completely hiding her left eye.

Her skin had the characteristic ebony tone of dark elves. Her right eye, the only one visible, was a deep black streaked with tiny golden flecks. She wore a fitted dark fabric corset accented with delicate netting at the bust. Thin leather straps and silver buckles held it together, emphasizing a figure where a slim waist accentuated generous hips and full breasts. Her face bore that haughty coldness, that innate confidence often attributed to elves.

She paused for a moment in front of Kaiser, then walked around the table to sit on the other chair, back to back with him. Their chairs almost touched. This part of the library was deserted; the few other students visible were relegated several rows away, absorbed in their own reading. The elf placed the book she was holding in front of her, opened it, and lifted it high enough so that only the upper part of her face peeked over the volume.

"It’s quite hard to believe, seeing you in a library. I wonder if you would have set foot in here if I weren’t around," she said, her voice low, tinged with a hint of mockery.

Kaiser didn’t look up immediately. A slow smile lit up his features before he replied.

"Appearances can be deceiving. I could even describe myself as a lover of knowledge, to a certain extent."

"So what information did you actually want? About your assassins?"

"What the fuck do I care about those idiots... It’s been a while. I missed you, you know."

Kaiser then turned his head slightly toward her, without fully breaking their back-to-back position.

"The feeling isn’t mutual," the dark elf tilted her head slightly, a crooked smile stretching her lips.

He then leaned back. His hand found the back of his own chair, then hers. In that movement, he brushed his lips against the smooth, dark cheek of the elf.

"Eleanor... I really missed you a lot," he murmured against her skin.

The contact was brief but clear. She held back an intake of breath, surprised. A subtle blush, barely perceptible, rose to her cheekbones before fading almost immediately.

"You really don’t pay attention to your surroundings," she whispered, her gaze quickly sweeping the empty surroundings.

Kaiser shrugged, a playful air of carelessness on his face.

"Why should I worry? No one’s watching us."

Eleanor let out a small sigh, her smile not fading.

"It’s pointless for anyone to know we know each other. And I categorically refuse for idle rumors to start circulating, claiming I’m having a relationship with one of my students. That would be... inappropriate."

"Really? What would be so bad about that?" he retorted, his voice turning teasing, provocative.

Without giving her time to answer, he leaned in again. This time, his lips pressed more firmly, with clear intent, against the sensitive curve of her neck, just below the lobe of her pointed ear. She held her breath, the hand holding the book tightening imperceptibly on the binding.

Eleanor’s breath cracked slightly as it came out, a small trembling sound escaping her mouth. She leaned in turn, her shoulder brushing Kaiser’s.

"Normally, I’d be delighted to spark your interest, Kaiser. But in the current context, attracting attention is the last thing I want. My position here is... delicate."

"Hmmm... I see," Kaiser acknowledged as he slowly straightened, the leather of the chair creaking under his weight. He watched a group of students pass in the distance between the shelves.

A comfortable silence settled in, filled only by the rustle of pages and the distant murmur of student conversations. Eleanor broke it with a softer voice.

"But tell me, where did you really disappear to all those months?"

"Far from the capital. I unfortunately lost a bit of time in a rift, and so I ended up perfecting some of my techniques." His answer was evasive. He turned slightly toward her. "And you? Your rise to professor status at Sky City Academy deserves an explanation."

"It sounds like you’re really underestimating me," she retorted, adopting a mock-offended air. "Have you forgotten who you’re talking to?"

Kaiser gave a smile and shook his head. "How could I forget? You’re Eleanor, leader of the Spiders, the most extensive intelligence and espionage network in Black Neon and the empire."

"Exactly," she confirmed, her smile softening into something more genuine. "Infiltrating the Academy under an academic cover was a logical move." She leaned in again, and this time her warm breath brushed the skin of Kaiser’s neck. "This is part of my territory, Kaiser."

"I’ll keep that in mind~," he murmured.

Without the slightest warning, he turned his head and captured her lips in a kiss. Eleanor gave a slight start. Then she responded, her fingers tightening on the arm of her chair. An indelible smile formed against Kaiser’s mouth as they surrendered to the moment.

They separated after a few seconds, their breathing slightly accelerated.

"In the meantime, what interesting things have happened behind the scenes?"

Eleanor settled back. "You must know the broad strokes: with the purge of the Kaelen family." She lowered her voice another notch. "But the most worrying development concerns Spectrum. Their activity has increased exponentially in recent months."

"You know the reason, I imagine."

"Absolutely," she nodded, a flash of pride in her eyes. "The fragments we’ve gathered all point to one thing. They believe they’ve located the Key of Solomon, which would allow summoning high-ranking demons. It still needs confirmation."

"I see. If that information is verified, their agitation is more than justified."

Eleanor paused, studying his face. Then a somewhat sinister smile slowly stretched her lips, transforming her features into a mask of conspiracy.

"Our spies hold major positions in almost every major faction. I can provide you with the locations of their rifts, excerpts from their long-term plans. Anything that could be useful to you." She paused. "There’s only one stronghold where my people have never managed to penetrate: the Babylonian faction. Their internal security is... paranoid to an insane degree."

Kaiser let out a short, almost admiring laugh.

"That doesn’t surprise me. Their leader is Nox Walpurgy. That madman probably orders weekly purges. Infiltrating his faction is a suicide mission."

Eleanor laughed in turn, a soft, melodic sound.

"Therefore, if you wish, I can facilitate your rise within any other faction. You could take control in a few months."

"The offer is tempting, but I decline. I prefer to move forward alone; I have my own methods."

"Very well," she agreed without insisting, her smile lingering. She respected his choices, even when she disapproved of them.

Kaiser closed his book, stood up, and leaned toward her again. This time, he took her face between his hands and kissed her one last time. Their lips stayed locked for a good while.

When he finally straightened, his voice was just a hoarse murmur.

"Despite everything... I’m genuinely glad to have seen you again, my beloved witch."

"Why do you say all that bullshit," she whispered back, affection visible on her face.

"Anyway, we can see each other often, right?"

Kaiser nodded, giving her one last crooked smile that almost made one forget the coldness in his eyes. Without another word, he turned away. He crossed the library aisles and disappeared into the dimness of the corridor, leaving Eleanor alone with a complex expression.

"Day by day... I wonder if I should still go ahead with my plans... Kaiser..." She sighed to herself.

"It wasn’t planned... but whatever."
