Chapter 246: What the Hell Is This Shit!?

The morning rose slowly over the desert. The first rays of sunlight pierced the cold veil of the night, gradually warming the golden sand.

The wind blew lightly, carrying a rather refreshing sensation. After the massacre, the four had well deserved a moment of peace.

The atmosphere was peaceful; one might almost have said they weren’t in Tenebris.

As the sun’s rays stretched across the horizon, the four prepared to break camp. Being warriors, their perception of rest was different. Even while enjoying nature, they remained aware of their surroundings.

"We keep going in the same direction?" Kaiser finally asked, breaking the silence while he continued meticulously cleaning his swords, one after the other.

’Why the fuck won’t this damn stain come off, shit,’ he thought, applying much more pressure to a blackened spot on the blade caused by the mutts’ blood.

"Yeah..." Julian simply replied, stretching slowly. He wiped his face with the back of his hand before getting back to work.

"We still have to find Rosalinda’s pussy!"

Kaiser sighed: "Why be so vulgar?"

"Me vulgar?! Your mom’s pussy!!"

Jasper pulled an arrow from his quiver: "I’m gonna fuck..."

"MAGNIFICENT! A FIGHT! A FIGHT!" Nox clapped his hands like a kid.

"Calm down, guys... The road is a bit long... Don’t piss me off," Kaiser tried to reason with them.

Without wasting time, they quietly resumed their march, crossing the vast desert expanse. This time the journey was calm, way too calm in fact.

This was Tenebris, damn it! There should have been deformed monsters, creatures so hideous they could haunt someone’s nights for a month. But apart from the dogs, there was nothing at all, just sand and more sand as far as the eye could see.

"This is really weird..." Julian muttered while taking a step. "Why is it so peaceful?"

"The only possibility I can think of is..." Jasper began, kneeling down and observing the footprints of a creature. They looked a lot like those of a lizard.

"Go on, spit it out quick," Julian snapped back, unable to wait.

"... It just means we might be in the territory of a super predator!" Kaiser replied for him.

Jasper looked at both of them before nodding. He had reached the same conclusion. It was almost impossible for this part of the desert to be empty, especially since there were different water points.

"At least we won’t get bored..." Nox sighed while continuing his nonchalant walk.

The team members had already adapted to the environment. The long hours of walking no longer affected them. But something was off. They had been walking for more than three hours, so why hadn’t they encountered a structure, or a base... anything?

For the beasts, they had reached a conclusion, but now they should have left its territory.

"Fuck!" Julian spat. He was the one who couldn’t stay still for two seconds.

"It would be cool to meet some local specialties... I wonder if they resist pain well?" Nox said, still with his good mood that contrasted with the others. And yet the guy was supposed to have lost his sister.

"Dude, stop jinxing us!" Julian spat without even bothering to look at him. His eyes remained fixed on the horizon.

"... I’m not jinxing anything, I’m bored..." Nox replied calmly, as if he hadn’t really heard Julian’s remark.

There wasn’t much to see. Nothing but sand. The wind, like a soft and regular breath, made the dunes ripple, but no life was visible on the horizon. It looked more like a picnic than a raid in hostile territory.

"You sure that guy... Zak, gave the right info?" Kaiser finally asked, feeling like he was starting to go in circles. They had been walking for hours now without encountering anything but this damn desert. They had faced the dogs the day before, but nothing else. Nothing of what they were supposed to find.

He had personally made sure to follow the directions Julian had given.

’Taking the wrong path wasn’t an option, because he had checked several times.’

But the other logical option remained that Zak’s information might not have been correct.

Julian, at the front of the formation, stayed silent for a moment. He didn’t like it either.

’After all this time wandering this damn desert, we should already have reached a place to rest! Fuck!’ he thought while scanning the horizon, searching for any sign: any clue that could indicate they were on the right path.

"The information was correct..." Nox simply said, as if to cut short the doubts beginning to hang in the air. He wasn’t as desperate as the others. He knew Zak hadn’t lied. The chances were slim that Zak, in his state, could have been capable of formulating a lie. His torture had completely broken him.

Julian slightly turned his head toward Nox. He opened his mouth as if to reply, but no sound came out. Finally, after a few seconds of hesitation, he chose to trust. After all, he had witnessed the treatment Zak had endured. He himself wasn’t sure he could have resisted that kind of pressure.

For his part, Kaiser silently observed the two men, wondering what kind of fate Nox and Julian had inflicted on an important member of the Spina clan for them to be so convinced of the truth of his words.

Then, finally, Kaiser turned toward Nox. The latter seemed just as confident, but he knew what he was doing. Kaiser knew Nox and his tendencies. If he said the information was good, it was probably true.

Jasper, for his part, hadn’t said a word for a while. He seemed focused, scrutinizing the environment with sharpened attention. This lack of comment was perhaps the best decision.

"I found something..." Jasper said, suddenly slowing down.

"More of those damn animals?" Julian asked, already annoyed at the idea of having to face the desert dogs again.

"No... It’s a structure. It’s about 500 meters ahead."

At those words, a flash of relief passed over their faces.

"Let’s go," Kaiser said, picking up the pace. His gaze hardened. He didn’t want to waste time.

In about fifteen minutes, they finally arrived in front of the structure.

It was a tower made of black stone. The walls were massive, with carefully worked stones, but time had worn it down, giving the structure an aura of unsettling decay. The tower stood majestically in the vastness of the desert, with signs of erosion on its surfaces, but it remained imposing, menacing.

"Alright, that’s all well and good, but how do we infiltrate it?" Kaiser asked, looking at the closed entrance. The puzzle was simple: the place seemed abandoned, but they had to get in.

"Infiltrate what?" Julian replied in a somewhat mocking tone before making a brusque hand gesture. Then, with a single sword slash, an ice slash destroyed the massive door, which collapsed with a dull thud.

"Fuck!" Kaiser swore, drawing his twin swords. He was the idiot who wanted to do an infiltration with these lunatics. Now with this noise, unless they were deaf, the enemy definitely knew they were coming.

"We go in without wasting time!" Kaiser finally said, resigning himself to fighting whatever came.

They entered the tower. The interior was dark, bathed in weak light coming from a few broken windows.

The air was heavy, impregnated with a smell of mold and iron. On either side of the hall, cells stood, crammed close together.

"What the hell is this shit!?" Julian exclaimed, having just tilted his head to examine what was in one of the cells.

Lying on the ground was a body in a huge viscous black puddle. The most disturbing part was that the creation seemed to have been remade. It had two wings mechanically attached to its back, claws, and two horns protruding, and it was humanoid.

"Chimeras," Nox said after glancing at it. "But this one is dead... It’s a pretty shoddy experiment, I can do better~"

"What kind of place is this again?" Julian asked, realizing what was going on in this place.

But as he was still admiring the carnage, a dull noise rose from the back of the dark corridor.

*Aghhhhhhhh*

A high-pitched cry, like that of an animal in agony.

"What the—!"
