Chapter 50: Jewel of the Dominion

"You are always stuck with the cooking duty, let me make our dinner tonight." Tess offered while taking the cooking supplies and putting it over the bonfire.

It was true, I have been cooking a lot of our meals in the last couple of days, even in the cage I had been the one to keep the spatial storage containing our food and water.

Slightly nodding towards her, I stood up and walked a couple of feet away so I wouldn’t get in her way.

That night was a peaceful one, perhaps it was the hope for finally being able to go home, but the three of us, after a very long time, sat together laughing, talking to each other, even going back to the topic of me naming my revenants.

More names were suggested, but once again, they were dismissed by both stormraven and Duskwraith this time. In the end, we had our dinner and went to sleep while they still remained nameless. Tomorrow was going to be a big day, and we had to be as prepared as we possibly could.

Morning arrived, once again due to the nature mine being the last shift I was the one who made breakfast.

Once all of us had finished eating, we packed our stuff and set out. Our current goal was to find an entrance to the city, perhaps some kind of gate, or a lower likelihood, a fissure in the wall like the one we had witnessed at Lashira.

It took us only a couple of hours of walking under the scorching hot sun before we found a giant metal gate leading to the inside of the city. The gate, unlike the wall, had fallen a long time ago, half of it lying in the sand, broken and tarnished by the elements and time.

This was it. We quickly set up a temporary camp and began resting up. I gave Tess and Aria some water from the spatial storage to freshen up while I summoned Stormraven and Duskwraith, both of whom silently entered and began exploring the city.

After that we waited with baited breaths, while I sat down near the wall and concentrated with half of my mind focusing on both of them as they went around the city, looking for any signs of life.

Looking at the city in front of me, even I couldn’t help but shake my head in disappointment. Massive stone and marble buildings which once must had been carved with intricrate symbols now stood withered and broken, same with the streets and the roads, both of which remained shattered and fragmented.

Even if I couldn’t see it with my own eyes, I could tell this place must have been quite something in its glory days. A place that couldn’t even be placed in the same berth as those with Lashira.

"Jewel of Elduvar’s Dominion, huh?" I mumbled to myself. Obryth had been right; this city, or what it must have been at one point, truly must have been worthy of its title.

Unfortunately, however beautiful this city might have been, it was also filled with several low-level monsters. The outer district was practically swarmed with these small jackal-like creatures. Just like jackals, these walked on all fours but had abnormally larger ribcages and uneven teeth.

Groups of these creatures roamed around the city, hunting and looking for other groups, I had even had the displeasure of seeing the clash between two groups and finding one chewing through another jackal’s corpse.

The good thing was they didn’t seem much stronger than the duskwraiths.

Besides, I wasn’t interested in the jackals anyway. Instead, my target was the place where the Azure vein, the floating river, descended. It was going to be our ticket home, after all.

From the looks of it, the place or the port was situated inside the middle district. Unfortunately, the range of my connection wasn’t long enough for Duskwraith and Stormraven to investigate.

So, instead, I focused on finding the route towards the middle district, or at least something close to it. Sarhina was a big city after all; my range didn’t even cover half of the inner district.

Once I finished with my findings, I asked the two of them to come back. At the same time, I slowly opened my eyes and stood up from my seat, slowly walking towards Aria and Tess and explaining the situation.

"So we don’t know what’s inside the middle district, or even the complete inner district as well." Aria was the first to speak, while Tess sat beside her with a worried look on her face.

"Yes, if we want to avoid unnecessary trouble with the jackal groups, we would need to be quick on our way to the middle district. Meaning we would be going in blind, with no idea of what kind of monsters are in there." I spoke.

"You said the jackals are only as strong as the duskwraith; whatever kinds of creatures might delve into the middle district, they can’t be much stronger than them; in fact, I would even guess the middle district is also inhabited by similar creatures. The ecosystem of this place wouldn’t work otherwise." Tess suggested from the side.

"If we are going in we need to do it right now, there is still quite some time till the sunset. Plus, Duskwraith found a large number of those jackals sleeping inside the broken buildings. These creatures, they might be nocturnal and waiting any longer would only make things more difficult for us." I spoke from the side.

Both Tess and Aria agreed, and so the plan was made. We quickly gathered whatever stuff we had taken out and began checking our gear.

Our previous armor especially had taken quite a lot of damage in the sandstorm so Aria and Tess had provided me a spare one. One with the crest of Nyrith family on it’s side.

Wearing it, I couldn’t help but laugh in my head.

Great, I am a knight of Nyrith now. Who would’ve thought? If Ashe were here, she’d probably be screaming her head off."
