Chapter 408: The Naivety [2]

Finally, after the Duchess had left his line of sight, Jordan appeared in front of him, looking at him strangely. Axel had healed, but he was out of energy. The Branch head of Greaves Commerce used his own mana to destroy all the lingering blood and dirt on his body.

He smiled, extending his hand towards Axel, "Why don’t we leave this wretched place?"

Axel glanced one more time towards the Count, who had been turned unconscious in the middle of all this, probably done by Jordan himself, and the man reassured him again, "Don’t worry. I will make sure he gets to the right hell."

The man smiled, whispering close to his ear, "What a scary little monster you are. To think your plan worked this flawlessly. I did not expect it to turn out so well. I was especially doubtful if the Duchess would come or not."

Axel finally eased his expression, glancing at the 4th phase powerhouse, he stated, "You go on ahead. I presume this much should be enough to lift all restrictions upon my family?"

Jordan grinned, "More than enough. I will make sure your family cannot be restricted any further."

But the next moment, his expression turned solemn, as he added, "But which is also the reason the Duchess will get desperate to use more underhanded methods. Especially with how tumultuous the situation of the whole of humanity is."

Jordan then gazed towards Daniel Nomrad, who seemed to be wearing a complicated look on his face. He understood that the boy’s father was going through a complex storm of emotions because Daniel Nomrad was wholly unaware of his son’s brutal plans.

With everything that proceeded to happen in this short span of time, it was not hard for the Nomrad patriarch to piece together the fact that Jordan and Axel had planned this whole endeavor together to push back further the influence of the Duchess.

Both son and father needed to talk, and he did not want to meddle. "Alright then, I will leave for now."

Axel sighed as he looked at his old man, who seemed to be wearing an unreadable expression; even so, Daniel stepped forth and patted his shoulder, "I’m just glad that... you’re okay, Son."

Axel nodded, smiling, "Let’s go home."

On the path to home, Daniel, Vargas, and Axel were in one carriage, while Lex and Williams went in another direction for another job.

Daniel finally spoke, unable to contain his questions, "So, this was all your plan, Axel?"

Axel answered truthfully, "Yes, it was."

Daniel turned towards his butler, "Vargas, did you know all of this as well?"

The butler’s expression turned solemn, "I’m sorry, master, but... You are too soft-hearted. Even after all of this, you remain too kind for your own good."

Daniel was stunned by that response; he did not expect his loyal butler and friend ever to say such a thing. Turning to his son, asking again, "Do you think the same, Son?"

Axel nodded expressionlessly.

Daniel was again stunted to disbelief, letting out a wistful laughter, "So, you planned to kill Morin Drake from the start?"

Axel affirmed, "Of course."

Daniel noticed how his son was utterly nonchalant after taking the life of another human, as if he didn’t even care.

"You took away the life of another human; do you not care about it in the slightest? You took away the son of another father?" asked Daniel in apprehension.

Axel furrowed his eyebrows. He almost stated in revulsion, "What are you talking about? It’s only natural that I kill my enemies."

Axel asked his father, "Let me ask you something in exchange. Would you spare the life of my mother’s killer, if you had the chance to kill that person?"

Words came out of Daniel’s mouth automatically, a hint of his killing intent escaping in his words, "Of course, I would."

Axel smiled as he described the same thing, but in another scenario, "Then would you still kill that person even if she had a son, and a family waiting for her?"

Daniel could not speak; the words stuck in his throat. In the end, it was Axel who answered in disappointment, "See, this is the difference between you and me. I would never hesitate, even if it means killing her right in front of her children, if it is necessary."

The carriage slowly came to a halt as they reached in front of the Nomrad mansion, and Axel walked out. Meanwhile, Daniel wore a look of horror, unable to believe the cruel statement his son had just made.

If only he knew the true extent of cruelty that Axel Nomrad was capable of. He would then question if this was truly his son or something else entirely.

Vargas also commented while walking out, "This goodness of yours is the very reason why you have lost everything, my friend, and your son knows what kind of dog-eat-dog world this is, far more than you."

Vargas scowled at Daniel, "What use is there in being righteous and kind, if the cost of it is losing everything you love and care for?"

Daniel gritted his teeth, speaking in protest, "Then what makes us any different from those who started this very cycle of hatred?"

Vargas stated in a ridicule, almost in the form of a furious outburst, "THAT’S THE FUCKING POINT, DANIEL. YOU HAVE TO BE THE SAME AS THEM TO PROTECT YOURSELF, NOT THE BETTER ONE."

"BECAUSE THERE IS NO PLACE FOR THE BETTER ONES. AT LEAST, NOT WITHIN THIS WORLD," he proclaimed darkly, the absolute truth of this world coming out of his mouth.

Then the old assassin simply left, shaking his head, for such a long... long time he had wanted to say those words to Daniel. But did not find the right situation or moment to make him understand. But that moment finally came today, for he did not merely speak the words.

But the actions of his very son had shown him that this is not a world where the good guy wins. This is a world where the good guy must become the worst.

You either become an oppressor here or the oppressed.

Or maybe there was a better sentence to convey this reality. He remembered the world. Young master stated to him when he revealed that plan, "You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become a villain."
