Chapter 416: Devil’s Pawn

Zena hurriedly closed her eyes and looked within her, witnessing the changed structure of her soul sanctum. It had indeed changed; a dark, demonic luster covered it. But most importantly, she could feel it instinctively.

The malevolent dark power, a trace of something supreme, was planted inside of her. The wall that had been blocking her for so many years had indeed broken down. She tried so many things, but it was the end of her talent. And there was rarely anything in this entire continent that could grow one’s innate potential as a seeker.

This potential differed from the aspect potential, which marked the outer limit of one’s reach. But most Seekers in truth could not even approach that final boundary. They would crumble much earlier.

As she opened her eyes, her gaze could not hide the excitement that she felt.

Seeing her expression, Axel chuckled. He continued, "And this is merely the surface level of the true potential I gave you. The demon bloodline within you now is like an external parasite. You have to make it your own."

"Accept the darkness."

"Devour the darkness."

"Become the darkness."

"If you can become a complete demon. You will have such power that even your father, whom you so greatly fear, will seem like an insignificant ant," he declared boldly, "But that road will be just as brutal."

Axel gestured towards the fire, "For example, do you know the amount of force the one who was trying to kill me sent to deal with me? While not knowing that I am a demon?"

Zena nudged him to continue, and he revealed with a chilling smile, "100 assassins, all of mid 2nd phase or greater prowess. Then came all the Six-Armed Apekins of the forest. When all of my power was exhausted, came the most deadly enemy, an assassin with peak 3rd phase combat prowess. All while I was merely in my weaker runecaster aspect."

Zena felt an overwhelming, hidden passion for power burst forth, a desire that had been buried for too long. Unmatched and uncontested power, the feeling she felt when she had first become a Seeker. After so many years, she was feeling that sensation again. Her heart grew restless.

But she calmed herself forcefully; there was a catch, there must be a high price for it all. She did not know what the demon in front of her wanted her to do. What he was plotting or who he was. Too many mysteries shrouded him like a veil.

She finally mustered the courage to ask, "Why? Why me??"

Axel nodded, "Truthfully, I need someone inside the minor kingdoms. Someone who can grow a strong influence in a relatively short amount of time. As for the fact that you have such a deep heritage inside Ravenspire, that is a fortunate coincidence."

He added nonchalantly, "And your strength isn’t bad for your level. A character worth nurturing, unyielding but flexible, with a proper purpose in mind."

Axel further clarified, "And you don’t have to worry about me controlling you. You only need to grow strong enough to take revenge and take control over your family as fast as possible. As you will act as my hidden hand inside Ravenspire."

"If you prove yourself to be trustworthy and capable enough. You might one day reach my level. I will help you become a complete demon at the very least. As for the rest, you will learn of it when the time is right," he reassured the women.

She had a complicated look on her face, but Axel did not interrupt and let her think it through. She asked, "My brother, does he also have the potential to become a demon?"

Axel answered uncaringly, "Depends." he didn’t care much about the woman’s brother. She was the primary focus here. If her brother turned out to be something good, it would be a bonus; if not, he couldn’t be bothered to give a damn about that Extra.

Axel blinked, ’What the fork?’

Wasn’t he supposed to be the Extra one in the story, but was now playing the role of the gradual final endgame boss? What an irony it was, truly.

Axel shook his head and dispelled that strange thought. His expression suddenly turned grim. As he released a sliver of his killing intent towards Zena, and uttered in a frosty, cold tone, "Oh, and from next time, don’t act like a fucking hoe, wearing barely any clothes. It’s disgusting. Now go and take your brother away. No need to tell him any of these, for now."

"Do you understand?" he asked, his blue eyes blazing with murderous intent.

Zena was kneeling on the ground, as if a mountain was pressed on her, and boundless fear gripped her heart. As a Demonkin, the fury of her master directed at her felt nothing less than a soul-shuddering pain, if only for a few moments.

Blood came out of all of her nostrils. But the worst was the dreading sensation, brushing off against her soul. She kowtowed, with utmost obedience, letting every ounce of her self-esteem go in that moment,

"I understand. My lord."

Axel’s killing intent subsided only after hearing those words. Then he stood up and spoke one last command: "Leave."

Even without cleaning the blood from her face, with trembling feet, she got up, picking up her unconscious brother. She ran, she ran, as if her life depended on it. Of course, it was nothing but an expression of her inner feelings. A way to express the fear that still gripped her heart, as she was too overwhelmed by all the things that just happened.

It was only after crossing the entire forest that her beating heart calmed down a bit. Gasping for breath, she eventually bit her lip so hard that it started bleeding fresh blood. She had the urge to run away to some other place, but it brought an ominous feeling to her soul again.

If she did that, she knew in her bones it would not end well for her or her brother. Even if it was for her younger brother’s sake, she had to do as the demon said and grow stronger. Maybe, just maybe, there would be some salvation at the end of her road.

And what the demon said was indeed true. Not only had the wall blocking her progression crumbled, but she had also calmed down a bit, and her senses had changed. She felt her foundation to be stronger, ever so slightly.

A deep power coursed through her entire being, and she had to make it her own. She could only imagine how long it might take for her to reach that level, to be able to compete with her father and the forces of her family, even with this demonic power.

Even so, there was no other choice. Instead of prematurely dying like a worthless dog, maybe it was better to play the pawn of the devil. And become a being worth something...
