Chapter 458: Circle of Dread

Gritting his teeth with hatred, Officer Pax ordered the 20 peak 3rd-phase seekers behind him to follow, ready for battle. It didn’t matter what the thing that attacked this place was; it would not be getting out of here alive, whether it be a monster, a human, or even the ghost race bastards.

Since Officer Pax had the master level control of all formations and the killer rune mechanism hidden on this island, he would make sure to give the abomination a hell that it would never forget. To play with the lives of innocent humans like a psychopath.

It would learn its lesson the hard way.

But the officer had to rein in his rage and walk cautiously into the ginormous facility building that housed all the criminals. He stepped into the main dark corridor, alongside the 20 seekers behind him. They walked like a trained unit, marching towards an unknown enemy, their footsteps silent.

Their senses were alert, ready to attack and fight like a ruthless killing machine at a moment’s notice. Suddenly, one person said from behind, his voice shaky, "Of... Officer Pax."

Everyone halted in their tracks. The Officer asked in an annoyed tone, "What is it?"

And the seeker pointed downwards, in the darkness they could not see, and they had not realized that every inch of the damned corridor was flowing with blood. Officer Pax’s eyes trembled, not because of the blood but rather because of how he had not noticed it.

No, it was literally impossible for him not to notice it, or smell this overflowing stench of blood. Even now, he could not sense it.

"Arghh, NOOOOOOOOOOO...."

Pax’s head snapped back at the hearing of the scream. All the third-phase Seekers trembled simultaneously. And they attacked whatever it was that had grabbed one of their companion. But the darkness within that place was too encroaching.

Just like that, one of their companions had vanished right in front of their eyes like it was nothing. A peak third-phase Seeker was gone. Only the shadow of his screaming echo could be heard, reverberating endlessly through the facility.

Even Pax, who was at mid-4th phase. With his mighty senses, he could not peer through the darkness. The officer realized something very disturbing. Why? Why wasn’t he able to see through the darkness? Nor could he smell the overflowing blood beneath his feet.

No, with his caution, he would never step inside this place. If his senses were blocked, why did he not even realize this sooner? He growled to his companions, "Something is messing with our minds. Walk fast; we need to get to the center of it."

Yet, this time, he could not help but step back in terror; half of his companions were gone.

Hehehehe... heeheehee... HAAaaahhh... hhhheehehehe... Aaaahahhh...

Hundreds upon hundreds of inhumane ghostly voices laughed at once. Creating a chorus of haunting symphony that struck at the very soul of every single human Seeker present. As such, the fear that was within them started to bloom if they were to check their insides at this moment.

They would see that a black, beautiful, demonic flower, a small wisp of gray smoke at its center, had bloomed inside their soul sanctum. Thus, the fear turned into despair. A very small flicker of it. But it existed nonetheless, and that was all that was needed.

Officer Pax roared, "ATTACK EVERYTHING AROUND YOU."

And so the remaining ones did. The attack of ten peak third-phase seekers and someone as powerful as himself should have caused catastrophic destruction on a scale inconceivable to a mundane human. But....

No sound was heard in his ears,

No battle cry of his companions,

Only their dying screams, and the noise of their flesh being torn apart, "MonsteritsamonsterughcoughnooooooospearemesparepleaseIbegyouIhavechildrenbackhomepleasletmelivePLEASEEEEEdon’tlookatmelikethatdon’tcomecoserpleasepleasepleaseIdidn’tmeanitIdidn’tmeananythingIdon’twanttodieIdon’twanttodielikeTHISnooooooo—"

The pupils of Pax widened to the max,

Badump....

badump...

badump....

His heart was beating so loudly that it felt like it would jump out of his chest. For the first time in his life, he felt a fear so profound that his own body moved out of his command, and he ran, and ran and ran like a mad dog escaping from a pack of hyenas.

He ran for so long that it felt like an eternity had passed. He stopped for a moment to catch his breath; he was out of strength. Cold wind whistled in his ears, as if something had brushed past him just now, at great speed.

Directing his weapon, he stabbed in that direction, shooting a powerful attack, but nothing happened. Then a dark voice whispered into his ears, "Look down, human." 𝒻𝑟𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝑛𝘰𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝘤𝘰𝘮

The hairs on his whole body stood on end, and the black flower within his soul sanctum had now grown much larger. More dreadful. Moving his head like a rusted machine. Pax saw one of his companions’ heads ripped off, lying between his two feet. Made into a forceful, horrifying smile.

His teeth all red, his eyes weeping tears.

As Pax stumbled to the ground, he saw that he was in a circle, a circle made of the ripped heads of all his companions, all wearing wicked smiles; the weeping, bloody tears filled the circle in a matter of seconds. Their mouths all opened, and they again laughed that mind-numbing laughter.

"staybackstaybackIdon’tevenknowwhatyouarepleasedon’ttakemeIcan’tgothereIcan’tfollowyuintothedarkI’llconfessI’llrepentI’llburneverythingjustdon’tdragmeintothatvoidpleasepleasejustletmefadehereplease..." he screamed.

The despair within him had spiked so abruptly that the black flower in his soul sanctum had grown to the size of a large house. The insidious roots of the black flower had dug to the deepest depths of Pax’s soul sanctum.

A rough and large demonic hand grabbed the head of Pax from behind. He spoke, almost apologetic, "Uh, please forgive me, officer. I just wanted to test out something new. Please don’t hold it against me."

Yet, Pax could hear the words; he could only feel the immense evil and corruption that inhumane demonic voice contained, and Pax had already lost his mind.

Before the officer could give any reaction, with a flesh-tearing snap, his head was also ripped in the same manner. The demonic figure sighed as he looked around.

Holding his clawed hands forward, flickers of small starlights of various colors slowly came out from the dead bodies; these were the ethereal nexus cores of all the Seekers that the demon had killed. When they all gathered in his hand, the demon compressed it all into one flickering bright light that shimmered in an otherworldly hue.

The face of the demonic figure lit up in that light. Two red horns and a skull-like mask were on his face. And his red demonic eyes were filled with brutality as he watched the ball of light.

And he swallowed it whole.....

Prime Whispered, [Your ’despair’ grows stronger.]

After that, the darkness that had covered the entire facility vanished, revealing the facility’s true state. The demon walked, stepping over the dead human bodies with no regard whatsoever.

A minute later, he stood on a clear, see-through glass floor. There beneath his feet lay exactly one hundred humans, each sleeping in a healing pod. And these were all the captured students of the minor kingdoms. The ones who were on the dark ship of Zabiur Ulpranak when the academy attack had occurred.

The demon’s eyes went to a particular pod, where the prince of Ravenspire lay. He was no longer the elegant-looking champion of the minor kingdoms. But a stitched and tortured human doll. A chimera that barely looked like a human anymore.

And the dreadful demon named Osiris stated with no change of expression, "It’s time you become my pawn as well. Conner Ravenspire."
