Valen watched, bored, as his body fell to the side, his head rolling in the other direction. Death had become such a constant companion to him that he wasn't even sure anything could make him excited again.

He blinked slowly, waiting for his Gift to kick in as he controlled his body, standing headless.

There was a buzz, and just as his head popped back in place, it was vaporized, along with his upper body.

This time, Valen blinked in surprise. The stories were true. Lady Lilith was very powerful, even if no one knew how powerful.

His consciousness floated in the black and white space, filled with the energy of his Divine Gift. He seized as much energy as he could in preparation of popping back to life and giving her a fight. Maybe this would be interesting.

The buzz grew louder and he popped back to life, immediately ducking as Lilith's energy wreathed hands passed through where his head had been. Just as he'd predicted, she'd tried ripping his head off again.

His fist snapped forward, and Lilith slipped to the side, her legs coming up in a kick at his head, his arm snapped up, protecting his head as she kicked.

He was sent flying, and he reached out and grabbed the earth, digging a long furrow into it as he straightened himself.

"How dare you?!" Lilith snarled as she began walking towards him.

"I do not understand." Valen said calmly. "Isn't this a duel?" Why would she be surprised that he was fighting back?

"How dare you come to us and take Ren's attention from me?" She snarled as she walked over, energy wafting off her like smoke over a flame. "Did you think I forgot? That I forgot the way you stood in the road, wanting to kill Ren?"

"Apologies but there is a slight misunderstanding. I wanted to—"

"Shut up!" Lilith dashed towards him and Valen leaned to the side, avoiding her slash. She spun with the motion, her legs snapping up in a back kick. Valen crossed his hand to block it, digging his feet into the ground to avoid being sent flying.

He grabbed Lilith's retreating foot and as he brought down an elbow to snap it into two, Lilith's second leg came flying out of nowhere as she twisted in the air.

His eyes twitched. She'd kicked from the direction of the hand holding her leg, and he couldn't block it. He only had two options. Release her leg and step back to avoid the kick or go through with the motion and snap her leg. He'll still get hit but with his Divine Gift, it wouldn't be anything permanent.

He went through his options and decided to release the leg, stepping back to avoid the kick. He was much more interested with Lord Ren, and he was sure getting on Lady Lilith's bad side would only antagonize the young man.

"You think I didn't see the way you were staring at Ren?" Lilith grunted as she pressed forward, her fists flashing in a series of punches that were mostly dodged. "Ren might not see it but I know you're planning to kill him. I know it!"

"Lady Lilith, that is not my intention." Valen slowly backpedalled, trying to keep the flurry of fists at bay. "I truly just wanted a figh— Urk!"

Valen spat as Lilith sank a fist into his chest, tearing out the other side. He stared at her in calm as she placed her other hand on his shoulder and yanked her arm out.

"I know it!" She hissed.

Valen stumbled back, keeping the energy in his body. His lungs were gone and he couldn't speak, but that didn't stop him from trying. He choked for a few seconds as Lilith watched coldly.

"You know," she stepped back, her expression morphing into a thoughtful one in the blink of an eye, "this actually is a good thing."

Valen fell to his knees and a second later, there was a buzz, restoring his chest.

"If you hadn't come, I wouldn't have an opportunity to… relax like this."

Valen looked up at her from where he knelt, saying nothing.

"Ren has been on my back for the past few months." She groaned dramatically. "Don't use your gift. Don't fight. Don't yell at the servant. Don't kill. Come on. How can a person live without killing a few times? That's impossible." She turned to Valen, her eyes narrowing. "Don't you think?"

Valen took a second to think about what he should say, but Lilith stopped him.

"Stand." She said coldly. "Stand on your feet to your death. I can already tell what you think. You didn't answer immediately."

Valen blinked, surprised again. Why did she ask him if she wasn't willing to listen to his answer?

He climbed up to his feet, immediately leaping back as Lilith attacked. She leapt forward, meeting him in mid air. He twisted around her reaching hands, losing his left hand up to his elbow.

She tossed the arm to the side, coming straight for him. Valen blocked the first blow, caught the second on his shoulder and used that to land his own hit on the plate of energy covering her shoulder.

His arm popped back into place and he snapped it forward into a punch. Lilith leaned back down and Valen stepped forward, running himself through on the thin rapier made of energy that she had materialized.

He blinked, looking down. He hadn't expected that.

Before he could do anything, she straightened and ripped his head off. His body staggered backward, falling to its knees again. She held his head in her hands, wreathing it with energy.

"I can see the confidence in your eyes." Lilith smiled widely, her eyes shining. "You think you can escape death and you can. But you can't escape me."

Valen's head buzzed, trying to return back to where it belonged, but Lilith's energy coated his head, stopping his Divine Gift from working.

"Would you look at that?" Lilith chuckled, her smile growing unnaturally wider. "I guess I can kill you after all."

A tiny thread of fear ran through Valen. Was this it? Would Lady Lilith really be able to kill him?

He felt a smile warming up its way through him as the first feeling of excitement in what felt like decades thrummed through him.

Lilith tossed his head away, the energy coating it disappearing. There was a buzz and his head popped back on his body.

"Look alive, Valen!" Lilith laughed maniacally as he stood. "Today is the day of your death!"

"With pleasure." Valen's lips twitched, and just as he stepped forward, a gust of wind blew through the clearing.

The air rippled as Ren blurred into being between the two of them, head tilted towards Valen.

"If you smile, I'll kill you."
