"Whoa... My stats multiplied by crazy... Most especially the abilities and weapons I used in the battle with the Primordial demon. Seems I gained something after all. Hm? What’s this?"

His eyes caught the item slot in his inventory. "Necessary to activate the secret quest?"

It was tempting, and judging by the rank of the dungeon, it was clear that the rewards would be both plentiful and impressive, making the risks seem worth it.

"It’s a drag." He sighed and retreated to his bedroom. He had already been through so much for today, from the first phase of the Soul-Hunters exams, to the combat rounds, and then facing humanity’s greatest threat. The last thing he needed now was a life-threatening quest.

Besides, now that the Soul-Hunters’ examinations were over, the final selection was next, an evaluation of each Soul-Hunter’s performance during the exams. Those whose results were favourable enough would earn a chance to be assigned to one of the fourteen Soul-Squads.

The Next Day

Soul-Hunter’s Association

Intelligence Unit

A day had passed since the orange gate appeared. The victims, Xander Reymond and Elene Castelle, had been discharged late the previous night, after receiving proper treatment and sharing everything they knew and experienced inside the Soul-King’s domain.

The last victim of the gate, Hiro Kai, was currently at the organization’s intelligence unit, accompanied by the second seat of his squad who had his wooden sword in hand, the intelligence unit’s leader, and the head commander of the fourteen Soul-Squads.

The air was tense, and a heavy silence hung over them, as if they were mourning the death of a loved one.

"It can’t be..." Yui’s voice wavered, her hands and eyes trembling as she spoke, as if every one of her worst nightmares was actually realized.

"Captain... Are you actually telling us... That demons exist?" Zarek asked, his expression calm and nonchalant as always. Soul-Beasts were dangerous enough, but demons were on a completely different level, especially one capable of taking out a captain of the fourteen Soul-Squads in a single strike.

"So that unidentified Soul-Beast that came out of the first orange gate..."

"Yeah... It was probably a Primordial demon, but one at a very low rank given it was defeated by Rai Voltia."

The air grew silent once more as they all struggled to grasp the enormity of the situation. Based on what Mazmuth had said, it was clear that these demons were far beyond anything a human could handle.

"Head commander, what about the Inner Souls?" As Hiro asked, everyone in the room widened their eyes in surprise all at once, shocked and unsure how to react. The only exception was the head commander, who just looked at Hiro calmly, showing no surprise at all.

"The Inner Souls huh?" The head commander finally spoke. "It seems the matter at hand has spiralled out of control. Summon the Soul-King, but till then, we’ll proceed as plan. If it’s what we think it truly is, we’ll need every possible Soul-Hunter available."

"Yes Head commander!"

They all left, returning to their various units and stations. Yui went back to her desk, carefully organizing the results and assignment letters for the candidates of the Soul-Hunter exams, while Hiro and Zarek made their way back to their own unit.

"Livinus... I can’t believe he was working with the Inner Soul of all people." Hiro spoke as they walked back to their unit, his voice a mix of shock and anger, but beneath it all, there was a deep sadness over Livinus’s death. He had served as Livinus’s vice for several years, and during that time, they had formed a bond that was almost like family.

"I never really liked that guy, for a Soul-Hunter who is considered the vice captain of the 11th Soul-Squad, he was rather soft. Well I guess it doesn’t matter now."

"That’s right, what matters now is appointing a new vice captain. And you know you have to fill that position."

"But captain." Zarek sighed deeply, resting his arms on the wooden sword he had slung across his shoulders. "You know I have absolutely no interest in becoming a vice captain. Unless..."

Zarek let out a soft chuckle as he gently kicked open the door to the 11th unit, stepping inside with ease. "Fine then, I’ll do it."

"Hm?" Hiro was slightly taken aback, especially considering that Zarek had refused the same position countless times since joining the 11th Soul-Squad, which had eventually led him to appoint Livinus as vice captain. "What made you change your mind?"

"Because, if I take up the position, the only person left to fill is the second seat, is that reawakened kid, Rai Voltia, now that you have selected him to join the 11th Soul-Squad."

Hiro gulped, and didn’t reply, leaving Zarek’s words hanging in the air.

"You did manage to select him captain?"

He received no response, and when he turned around, Hiro was nowhere to be seen in the room. "Hey hey hey, captain." He chuckled nervously, almost like Hiro played a sick joke he wish he’d stop.

Almost immediately, Zarek rushed out of the room and saw Hiro sprinting down the association’s hallways, his strides long, powerful, and full of determination.

Then he chased after him. "Captain! You selected him didn’t you!? Captain!"
