Extra's Revenge: Reincarnated As A Slave-Chapter 54: Night Visitor
"Hmm..."
It was late in the night already, but Rey had not finished contemplating many things.
His back rested on the rough walls of the underground cell, and although he was very much awake, his face faced the ground while his eyes were closed.
Anyone observing him would think he was asleep, and perhaps that was what he wanted.
After all—
’I can’t rule out the possibility of the Desgarron Head or anyone else spying on me with some Artifact or Technique.’
In fact, that was likely the case.
Due to this, Rey pretended to be weak and frail, eventually acting like he had fallen asleep despite being in deep thought.
’Someone as powerful as Lord Dreyfus should have methods to confirm if I am asleep or not, but... am I really sure about that?’ Rey silently pondered on the subject.
There was an unsettling thing he noticed ever since he had fallen under the effects of the Head of Household’s Soul Art.
It had refused to leave his mind even now.
’Back then, he had complete access to my body through the other Soul, yet it doesn’t seem like he noticed my excessive Ether Core or diminished Curse Imprint.’
Even if the Head of Household ignored his absurd growth by assuming his daughter had something to do with it, wouldn’t he be concerned about Rey’s slave status being more flexible due to the imprint on him?
Why hadn’t he said anything?
’No, it doesn’t make sense for him to keep quiet about the Ether Core either. My growth is too unnatural. Even if it is nothing compared to his power, he’ll want to know how I managed to become so strong.’ Rey sighed, feeling a deep realization coming to him. ’My sudden rise in strength will surely make me more suspicious, and so would the diminished Curse Imprint. It is very relevant to this case, and he would have questioned me about it, or at least brought it up to better understand the situation.’
So why didn’t he?
The most logical answer Rey could think of was that Lord Dreyfus simply didn’t know.
’He couldn’t detect what was happening within my body? But if he couldn’t detect my Ether Pool and the Imprints in my body, that would also make him concerned and deeply suspicious. That man is very thorough, which shows in the way he explored my memories. He is also not killing me right away, which likely means he is after some things. His lack of suspicion towards me in that regard must mean that he thought he could detect my Ether Pool and Imprints, and he must have thought they were normal.’
What did all of this mean?
Somehow, Rey had managed to deceive a man who could use a High Sequence Technique?
How?
How was such a thing possible?!
’I don’t know. But it’s likely also why he couldn’t detect or affect my real Soul. All of this is certainly confusing, but I have to uncover these secrets if I wish to find a way out of this problem.’
After Rey thought more deeply about the matter, he had two theories.
’The first and least likely is that this is the mastermind’s arrangement. Maybe he sought to protect me because he knew his influence would be implicated somehow if the truth about my body is revealed. But this makes no sense, because it presupposes that the mastermind already knew about my secrets, which is why he could cover it up. Why would he help me cover it up, though? In fact, I’d be a perfect scapegoat if I were caught like this.’
Rey felt many things were amiss with thinking along this line, but there was a reason he harbored the idea regardless.
It was because this mysterious mastermind clearly had the means and audacity to offend one of the Noble Households of the Nether Realm.
They were not a small force.
Also, wasn’t it possible that this culprit could have future use for Rey?
Rey’s abilities and potential were evident for all to see, and if this culprit had detected Rey’s hidden power and the reduced Curse Imprint, they would be further interested in him.
They might be unwilling to throw him.away so easily.
Instead, they would use a less promising person as a scapegoat and bring Rey to their side.
’But they must also be aware of my personality, so they know I won’t work for them so easily. They also won’t be foolish enough to reveal themselves to someone as trustworthy as me. So, they decided to make me the scapegoat to put me in this precarious situation so they could have an advantage in terms of bargaining.’
Of course, this was only a possibility.
The second theory Rey had was more straightforward and it was the most likely.
’My reincarnation. All of these mysteries about my body and soul could be tied to my reincarnation.’
Rey knew almost nothing about this, though, so he had nothing to analyze.
However, it was precisely because of his lack of information in this front that he assumed this was the likely cause of his unique circumstance.
He knew too much in terms of the first theory, so he could find inconsistencies and arguments against his position.
So, he was split between the two ideas.
’Which is it? If it’s the second one, I have no way to confirm or falsify it. But if it is the first, the first theory, then the culprit should reach out to me within the few days of my captivity. In fact—’
"Aren’t you a sight for sore eyes?"
A voice suddenly echoed within the cell, causing Rey to raise his head to see a shadowy figure standing right outside his cramped room.
The entity had no face, and its body was made entirely of what resembled incorporeal shadows.
Its silhouette danced subtly, distorted, just like its voice.
After Rey raised his head, it spoke.
"Surely, you must have a lot of thoughts and questions. But you are a smart person, so you must have figured some things out on your own. If you haven’t, I’ll be quite disappointed."
Rey narrowed his eyes, parting his lips but not speaking.
"No need to hesitate. You aren’t being watched right now." The silhouette chuckled, quickly realizing his intentions.
"I see..."
Rey smiled upon hearing this.
Just as he expected, this astute person could discern his intentions very easily.
He knew him well, too.
’Whether or not this is the culprit or someone working for the culprit, it doesn’t matter. I have what I need. Now, should I glean more information?’
To do that, though, Rey had to also reveal information from his end.
"I’ve been expecting you. I knew you would come eventually..." 𝕗𝐫𝚎𝗲𝘄𝐞𝕓𝐧𝕠𝘃𝕖𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝚖
"Really? Why?"
"You set me up with that entire testimony. But I know you also wish to use me, and you intentionally put me in this situation to have a better grasp on me since you have reasons not to trust me."
"Haha! Well said! Well, it’s not like I can’t trust you... but I am just a very careful person. Simply consider this as a form of insurance."
After hearing this, Rey’s gaze turned solemn.
He asked;
"What did you do to my body?"
