Extra's Strategy: Cultivate Protagonists, Become Invincible-Chapter 107: Brewing Storm
Chapter 107: Brewing Storm
Qian Yun felt his mind filling up with some strange thoughts under the emotionless attention of the automaton.
The silver giant was incredibly majestic, to the point where he almost wanted to bow down in front of it in fear and awe. Even though it wore a metal helmet that covered its whole face, Qian Yun felt that a silent anger was brewing behind the metal casing.
What had he done wrong? He had done his best to come up with a law fragment that would resemble the principles behind the contracts he wielded so frequently.
Granted, the letters he had had to work with were rather strange and the law he had come up with failed to reach the standard he wanted, but it should definitely be as good a result one can achieve in his shoes, right?
"That’s an interesting piece of law fragment you’ve come up with, little one," the giant automaton spoke slowly.
Qian Yun felt his heart filling up with joy. So it was just his misconception! The examiner was satisfied with his performance!
"But it’s still not good enough to meet my expectations. Shouldn’t you be more proficient with laws compared to your peers? I can sense the depth of your skills. You must be very familiar with our Holy Land’s core art.
"This law fragment looks hardly any different compared to what the random cultivators from nowhere are creating in the rest of the testing grounds. How disappointing!"
Qian Yun felt his heart clench. It wasn’t fair! The letters he had been provided with were the sort with a very narrow usage. The law fragment he had come up with was already pushing the limits. It couldn’t possibly get better than that.
But before he could speak out in his defense, the giant interrupted him.
"It doesn’t matter what you think of my evaluation. If you’re trying to claim that the test is unfair, then you should have the guts to back your words up."
Qian Yun bowed his head, his teeth clenched. He had come this far, would he back down now?
"Tell me, little one, do you dare use your own law fragment on yourself? Do you have that much confidence in your own proficiency? Can you even prove that it’ll work?" The silver giant said, a hint of ridicule surfacing in its tone.
Qian Yun silently took out an emerald orb with a determined expression on his face. Seconds later, the link between the law fragment and the power source was established. With a deep breath, Qian Yun stepped forward and put his foot on the law fragment.
A blue glow appeared in the grooves of the law fragment, and Qian Yun felt as if his mind had suddenly been wrestled out from some sort of a cage, now free to fly out!
Countless slippery tendrils of thoughts and emotions appeared in his mind, something that gave off a foreign aura. These thoughts brought along a painful sensation he couldn’t explain, other than that it was the most non-physically painful sensation he had ever experienced. Tears began to blur his vision.
Amidst the chaos, a deep, soft voice guided him along, its influence getting deeper and deeper till it was his only clutch to sanity.
Qian Yun grabbed onto that voice and felt everything slowly calming down. The pain was lessening, but the onslaught of thoughts and emotions hadn’t disappeared.
A sudden searing coldness on his palms made him open his eyes. Looking down, he noticed a black pattern burnt into the skin of his palms. If one were proficient in the language of laws, they’d be able to make out two words disguised inside the pattern.
Nightmare Knight
The silver giant in front of him was no longer moving, but that didn’t bother Qian Yun in the slightest. For some reason, he felt that he knew this hall very well. He could pinpoint the exact law fragment that he needed to activate to leave this place swiftly.
But why would he want to leave this place?
Qian Yun couldn’t help but become startled at this sudden question that stemmed from the depth of his mind.
Indeed, why?
He wanted to obtain the real cultivation technique of the Sentient contract-type laws, right? He would bring it back to his family and become the hero...
"Hmm? But I already know everything there is to know from the manuals of the Sentient Contract Path!"
His own voice surprised him. Racking his brain, Qian Yun could suddenly visualize a large amount of texts that he had memorized at some point. He even had vague memories of cultivating extensively on this path!
When did that happen?
Feeling quite confused, Qian Yun stood still, contemplating his situation and what he was supposed to do now. He kept feeling like his mind was failing to grasp certain thoughts and concerns.
"Wait a minute, I should protect the platform from being harmed!"
Qian Yun found it absurd that he had forgotten that he had such an important job to attend to.
"I must make haste. If there are any outsiders with ill intentions, I need to detain them immediately. The purification process must not be interrupted."
________
The most vibrant planetoid of the Siyang Solar System entertained few visitors. It had only one human denizen, whose crystal palace was visible from even the nearby planets.
Today was one of the rare days for that palace to receive a visitor.
"My lord, I’ve received news from the branch model overseers that an old unit in one of the abandoned planets is showing signs of activity."
The speaker was a man with an old appearance but a robust voice. He spoke with a bow, even though what stood in front of him was a hundred-meter-tall tall door crafted out of natural Gloomsilver Ores.
The gigantic palace door immediately opened as if the person inside had been waiting there all along. A middle-aged man whose height reached at least four meters walked out, his expression showing curiosity.
"Which planet?" He enquired.
"Neutral Territory, North-East, Sector 7, Solar System 11, Planet 5. It’s right at the edge of the territory. We just abandoned it, barely for a decade, but the unit itself fell long ago. Nobody expected movement out of that place after such a long time," the elderly man answered.
The other party’s eyes brightened in recognition.
"If I remember correctly, it was the branch where their prime disciple went crazy over some personal grudge against the authorities, right? He used his influence to convert them all to the side of Nocturna Rebels without letting them know about the Celestial Ban.
"By the time they found out, it was too late. He had the control of everyone’s spiritual world, and he massacred his own people to feed some experiments. Even the most powerful Lifesmith of that branch couldn’t escape a horrific death."
The bowing old man straightened his back and nodded.
"Yes, my liege. In the end, destiny held an equally miserable fate for him. A primordial beast sealed in that place managed to fool him and leave him locked in a three-way spiritual battle for eternity. The details our investigation unearthed are recorded here," he added while handing a jade slip to the tall man respectfully.
The man concentrated on it for a moment before suddenly raising his eyebrows.
"Oh...I see. He eventually became a textbook case of a spiritual abomination! Three souls in one body, one complete, one broken, one damaged, what an interesting development! Now I remember ordering you to spare it for the research value it held!"
The old man nodded in agreement.
"Indeed, my liege. And I suspect that the movement in that unit right now is related to that abomination. If only that disciple hadn’t defected to the rebel faction... What a waste of potential!"
"Old Lu, go make a secret visit to that planet and observe the entire process. If the abomination successfully manages to purify itself, you know what to do."
As if already expecting such orders, the old man bowed once more and faded away from his spot immediately. The unnaturally tall middle-aged man stared at the jade in his hand for a long time, standing at the palace entrance.
"Nocturna forces should be aware already. I wonder if they’ll interfere to help their emissary win. Can’t let that happen, now, can we?"
