Chapter 50: Chapter 50: Just play, if you lose, it’s on me.

Miss Qin’s birthday banquet was rather unconventional. She wanted it to be lively, with guests arriving one after another. Besides the invited ones, some also brought their friends along. The young lady was naive and easy to speak to; she didn’t mind these things.

The party was scheduled to start at dusk, but the venue was already bustling. The soothing piano music served as a backdrop while people chatted incessantly with acquaintances. As the young lady’s appointed “responsible person,” Qin Fang had to make an early appearance.

Fu Songzhi arrived a bit later, holding a glass of champagne. His first question was directed at Pei Yu, “Has Brother Pei not arrived yet?”

“Not yet,” Qin Fang shook his phone, “soon.”

Suddenly, everyone fell silent, puzzled. It was clear who the “Brother Pei” in their conversation referred to. Miss Qin indeed had significant influence; she could get Pei Yu to attend her private birthday banquet.

A man sporting a rose on his chest approached them, surprised, “Brother Pei is coming too?”

Qin Fang glanced at him, recognizing his face as the young son from Wanke Electronics, a typical second-generation heir. He gave a faint smile, though his eyes scorned, “Is Brother Pei someone you can address like that?”

The man was taken aback, feeling uneasy. His friend quickly intervened, trying to make peace, “Mr. Xiaoqin, please don’t mind him. He’s drunk and talking nonsense.”

Qin Fang smiled again, looking rather forgiving, “Mr. Xiaoqin isn’t how you should address me either. Call me Xiaoqin.”

The man nodded repeatedly, his expression faltering. Before coming, his family had told them to be clever and make their presence felt; indeed, they made their presence felt, only it backfired.

Disinclined to bicker with them, Qin Fang looked at his phone, silently counting down, and after putting it away, he beamed and called over Fu Songzhi, “Let’s go. Our Brother Pei has arrived.”

The grand hall had roses of all colors lining the sculptured pillars from the entrance—a likely air-shipped early morning arrangement, as the petals looked fresh and beautiful. The gift boxes at the entrance were stacked into a wall. For people like them, even a simple birthday party distinguished between intimates and acquaintances. Friends who weren’t close could only leave their gifts there, merely as a display.

The hall’s carpet was thick. Shen Zhiyi didn’t quite keep her footing, her heel wobbled, and Pei Yu noticed it, helping her to stabilize, “Did you get hurt?”

They just so happened to be standing at the entrance of the hall, attracting much attention. Even someone like Shen Zhiyi, who was accustomed to being watched, felt uncomfortable. She shook her head, her hair swaying lightly with the movement, “No.”

“Brother Pei!”

Right on time, as soon as Pei Yu entered, Qin Fang came to greet him. He only called out to Fu Songzhi, but it was subtly evident that a dozen people were following him, all there for Pei Yu. They didn’t want to neglect him, but they were initially startled upon seeing him, both surprised and puzzled.

Pei Yu, surprisingly, had brought a female companion?

Those with keen eyes recognized Shen Zhiyi, feeling astonished yet secretly understanding.

So, the rumors that had been circulating recently were true. That little love interest was indeed Shen Zhiyi. But bringing her to such an event spoke volumes about Pei Yu’s attitude.

Unconcerned with what others thought, Pei Yu nodded slightly, greeting the two brothers. Nonchalantly, he commented, “The carpet is too thick.”

“Thick, is it?” Qin Fang looked down without much thought, offhandedly said, “I’ll have it removed.”

He smiled amiably as he handed a juice to Shen Zhiyi, “We meet again, Miss Shen. No schedule today?”

“No,” Shen Zhiyi took the glass, also greeting the two men.

As they walked into the hall, everyone glanced their way, not daring to interrupt. Qin Fang led the way, chatting as they walked, “The private room is ready. If you find it too noisy here, feel free to sit there for a while. Come out when my sister cuts the cake, just to show face. That girl will definitely complain if she doesn’t see you.”

As it was Miss Qin’s birthday party, the attendees were all young people, mostly from families that had dealings with each other. Several were quite familiar with Qin Fang. A few people were already in the private room; they stood up and greeted Pei Yu as he entered. These people had a somewhat special status—neither particularly close nor distant—Shen Zhiyi noticed they addressed Pei Yu as “Young Master Pei.”

They were probably childhood friends.

Pei Yu nodded, sitting in the space they had made for him, glanced at the deck of cards on the table, “Playing Black Ace?”

This was a game they often played. Fu Songzhi smiled, “Who won?”

Someone raised their hand, grinning and showing off a watch he had won, “Does Brother Pei want to play?”

“That depends on what the stakes are.”

If nothing caught his eye, he naturally couldn’t be bothered to play.

The people present were sharp-witted. The one who won the watch pulled out a photo on his phone, “A flawless emerald, 20 carats, I just took it, does Brother Pei have any interest?”

The question was directed at Pei Yu, but his gaze turned to Miss Shen, seemingly guessing whether she was interested. Unfortunately, Miss Shen was looking down and her expression was unreadable.

He set the stakes high, so the others couldn’t afford to lose either. They all showcased their stakes, mostly jewelry, and anyone who didn’t know better might think Miss Shen wanted to play with them.

A glass of juice was already empty. Miss Shen peeled a candy and heard Pei Yu ask, “Are you playing?”

She blinked, “Me? I’m not playing. I’ve never played before, afraid I’d lose.”

The game they played was simple, but the stakes were astoundingly valuable. She had nothing she could afford to lose.

Guessing what she was worried about, Pei Yu hooked his lips into a light smile, “Just play, if you lose, it’s on me.”

That wouldn’t do.

Miss Shen looked up at him, “I still prefer to win. You go ahead.”

“You think I can win?”

Pei Yu picked up the deck of cards on the table, and asked again, “Aren’t you bored just sitting here?”

“It’s okay, I just watch you play,” Miss Shen, nibbling on her candy, spoke a bit muffledly. Despite her lack of confidence, she oddly trusted him and said softly, “I think you can win.”

Pei Yu genuinely laughed this time, arching an eyebrow, “If I win, it’s yours.”

As the two of them chatted as if no one else was present, several people around them watched. Pei Yu’s behavior expressed nothing if not indulgence towards the lady beside him, finally giving the others a chance to show off through him, and of course, they were eager.

In this game, to win was to lose and to lose was to win.

Several people played cards. Miss Shen watched from the side. Both black Aces were in Pei Yu’s hands; the game turned into three against one. Miss Shen didn’t fully understand the rules, and Pei Yu explained them to her while he played, seemingly unafraid of revealing his cards, which caused Fu Songzhi, also in the game, to laugh helplessly, “If he still manages to lose, that would be too embarrassing.”

Embarrassing or not, it didn’t affect Pei Yu. His pile of cards kept diminishing until he casually laid down his last card, won the “Crown Ace,” and captured all three opponents, who all lost.

Fu Songzhi dropped his cards, laughing in exasperation, “How could you lose?”

“Don’t welch on the bet, send the stakes to Huating.”

Miss Shen was still trying to figure out this unfamiliar game when Pei Yu stopped paying attention to others and spread out the playing cards for her, explaining in detail, “Want to play a round?”

She was tempted, but Miss Shen had a condition, “Then we don’t place bets.”

Pei Yu smiled faintly, “No way.”

He had already decided what the bet would be.
