Failed Lord: My SSS-Ranked Skill Can Evolve Broken Talents!-Chapter 31: Eugene, The Three-Eyed Knight
Chapter 31: Eugene, The Three-Eyed Knight
Some hours earlier,
The scholarly moon palace commander, Eugene, adjusted his monocles as he glanced upon the remains— or lack therein—of the camp he'd stationed to observe any movement.
All he could see was a massive pool of blood, and everything else vanished from sight. He frowned, turning to the side and holding his chin, his gaze calculative, "This is weird."
He'd made sure not to reveal their positions in their readjustments. Everything was in place, and there was no way these men could have been wiped out without leaving a trace.
"They are overextended from the main camps, but," Eugene crouched, rummaging the grass with his hands, raising a bow, "The enemy's movements should have left a big trail."
Unless they flew with all the items from the camp, or had some sort of terrain control skills to hide their tracks. Eugene quickly stood to his feet, "I guess they installed a scout."
"A scout?" the man standing far behind Eugene, the golden haired Tyrott, frowned as he glared at the scholarly mans back, "They must have been very skilled to hide from us."
Eugene scoffed, "What an insult. Lady Valentine gathered the best of her squadron yet we managed to let some untalented swine sneak past our defences. Go report this to Pius."
"That big headed man would only blame our incompetence to no ends. We should take action and attack the village now that we've lost the element of surprise!" Tyrott advised.
"We can expect them to have prepared fortifications in response to our threat. Trying to charge in now would be nothing but insolence." Eugene shook his head, "Act carefully."
Tyrott calmed down, turning around to leave for Pius. Eugene followed him, reaching for one of the trees and sighing, "These ageing mahogany would be useful for woodwork."
He waited there, but even after hours, Tyrott did not return. As the morning grew into evening, Eugene felt a bad feeling rise from the pit of his stomach, and he started quickly.
He ran through the forests until he reached the camp, but when he got there, they all had moved out and only the emptiness of trees and stakes met him. Eugene was stunned.

Eugene quickly turned to the side, taking a path through the forests. He heard a blast from ahead, his heart racing as he ran towards the sound, "I am not built to handle this."
When he finally caught up to the halted forces, rushing through the crowd till he got to the front lines, he saw it— the bright red flames, a stunned Tyrott and aggravated Pius.
"You said they wouldn't have covered their only escape route in traps!" Pius shouted at the top of his lungs, the fumes from the flame filling the air, "Our position is revealed!"
"I didn't expect them to mine the forest." Tyrott complained, then he turned to see the fuming Eugene marching in his direction, "Where were you? They needed your expertise!"
"Expertise? I received no information that we were going to launch an attack on their village late into the evening!" Eugene growled, "Especially, in a forest filled with mines."
Eugene sighed, adjusting his monocle, "For what reason did you think that would be a good idea? In this darkness, navigating their defences would be very difficult to manage."
Pius facepalmed, "Well, I've had the forces retreat back for now. Tyrott hurried us to prepare our attack, so I didn't have time to go looking for you. It's good that you're here."
"Yes, we should retreat for now." Eugene agreed with their decision, then he lifted his gaze to the skies. He saw them— big boulders —raining from the heavens upon the army.
The boulders crashed upon the retreating men, crushing them to pieces. Trees caught in a falling boulder exploded to pieces, spreading fierce red flames throughout the area.
That was all Eugene could see as he hurtled through the air, his monocle shattered to pieces and nostrils running with blood. He crashed to the ground, shocked from the pain.
"Fuck." Pius cursed, shaking his head and groaning. He looked behind him, a ferocious gleam in his eyes as he pulled his blade, "They have long-ranged offence! Counter-attack!"
The front-lines were completely decimated from the attack, but it was only a fraction of the force. As the soldiers recovered from the attack, Pius prepared to return the favour.
As his angered cry fell, countless onagers were fired from behind, unleashing flaming metal ballistics at the village. Pius grabbed Eugene from the debris, retreating backwards.
The sky filled with flames, raining upon the village walls and catapults. The attack of the village ceased, giving Pius more space to retreat and observe, "Where did they get it?"
After retreating to higher ground, he saw the catapults lined up round the wall, and with no one daring to control them under the onslaught, they all turned into easy targets.
"Charge!" He shouted at the top of his lungs, standing atop a massive boulder. All the soldiers roared furiously, charging through the destroyed forest, their eyes covered in red.
With the aerial assault of their forces heavy on the enemy gates, no one dared come to challenge them. Eugene coughed, standing to his feet, "Were did they get so many rocks?"
He'd double checked, but they weren't so many massive boulders in the territory. Also, the onagers they'd brought weren't built to fire boulders of this size. It was all so strange.
Unless the enemy could have taken the stolen onagers, modified and duplicated them into the hundred into such a short matter of time then it all make more sense to Eugene.
"We'll have to crush our enemies to find out what secrets they are hiding." Pius held a cold gaze over the battlefield, jumping off the mountainous boulder, "Eugene, join Tyrott."
Eugene frowned, lowering his cracked monocle from his face as he watched Tyrott and the soldiers charge at the village gates, his hair and robes scattering into the bloody wind.
"And crush the enemy." Pius added, clenching his sword tight.
