Chapter 155: I wish I could have seen you winning

Yiren’s POV

THE BIG DAY!

"Oh, c’mon, Ning. I didn’t leave with Jun only because you said you wanted to talk." Everyone has left for the venue, and here I am... alone. Stuck in the headquarters only because my sister wanted to hear how Jun’s parents and brothers reacted when they found out about our marriage. Nope, telling her on the phone wasn’t an option; she wanted to see my expressions.

"Sorry, babe. Kai got a stomachache last minute. But don’t worry, he’s feeling better now. I’ll see you at the race."

"Can I talk to him?"

"Putting you on speaker," and then I hear Ning speaking in a low voice, ’It’s Yiren, she wants to talk—’

"No. Later."

Kai’s gruff response has me a little concerned, but maybe it’s just the stomachache. "Ning, it’s okay. Remember how we too get cranky during those days? Jun has stocked the entire refrigerator with mint chocolates to face less of my tantrums, haha."

"Of course. The cute and considerate Jun. Love in small gestures."

My smile widens, my hand instinctively goes to hold mom’s pendant, which was lying broken in my drawer, but Jun got it repaired and made me wear it this morning.

It’s true. He’s all about small gestures of unspeakable love. Like the steaming coffee tumbler I received from the driver the moment I got in the car. By the taste, I can tell he made it. Once upon a time, it was the worst coffee, but now it’s exactly what I crave. "Liam’s new nanny is here. I have to give her instructions on when to feed him. See you at the race."

"Okay, okay." Too bad Ning isn’t bringing Liam to the race due to the noise and air pollution. My little munchkin is ten months old and aunty’s sweetheart. I made a note on my phone to ask Meimei where she got the Scooby-Doo walker for her baby.

My phone pings with Jun’s message.

Jun: [Where r u? Race is about to start in 30 minutes.]

Me: [On my way. Will be there before that. Gotta cheer loudest for my hubby!]

Jun: [🫠 Hubby is my new favourite word. But plzzzz hurry up, I want you to see it from the beginning to the end. We are going to kill it today. This is happening all because of you 😘😘😘]

Me: [🙄 Yea. After all, it was my dream, I invested the money, worked my ass off for years to make it perfect... Everything is all ME. Bow and worship.]

Jun: [Sarcastic much, huh? I’ll bow and worship in a different way today when we are thousands of feet above the ground.]

Me: [🤨]

Jun: [The date, Bunny. I promised you the best date of your life. I’m flying you somewhere tonight.]

My heart skips a beat. No, it stops entirely. The date. Our first official date.

Jun: [And since we will be on the plane... how can I miss the opportunity to join the ’miles high club’.]

Me: [😑 Dirty, dirty boy... You know everyone is talking on the scene....I hear them whispering ’bout the places that you’ve been....And how you don’t know how to keep your business clean...]

JUN: [🤣🤣🤣 A lucky, lucky girl, She got married to a guy like me.....She’d kick me out if she ever really knew.....All the naughty thoughts I have about her. Mommy don’t know daddy’s always hot, who needs the body shop, to do something unholy.]

HAHAHA I howled out so loud at his quick, witty response that my driver and bodyguard both looked at me as if I grew two heads. Don’t blame me, guys—your boss is the biggest flirt and pervert.

Me: [Where are we going?]

Jun: [To the snake island. Duh, it’s a surprise.]

Me: [A hint, please? 🥹]

Jun: [No.]

Me: [😤🖕]

Jun: [I love you, bunny 🍆 💦 ]

Me: [Love yo–]

Our SUV hits from the side with the impact that slams me into the side door. Metal crunches, glass shatters, and my world turns dark. The driver and the bodyguard scream something that I can’t make out from the ringing in my ears. The SUV keeps rolling, wildly tossing me.

Coming still, I taste blood in my mouth, and my body aches like I’ve been beaten a thousand times.

"Ma’am, are you okay?" the bodyguard, Sasha, asks me with heavy labored breaths.

"Yeah. What about you?"

"Seems fine. It’s a specially designed car to survive such things."

The car is toppled to the side, and our roof glass has completely shattered. Fighting the ache in my body, I push myself up to sit on my knees and glance at the driver. He is unconscious and badly stuck in his seat, where the impact was maximum.

Sasha presses two fingers to the driver’s neck. "Weak. But alive."

"Not for long. We need help to get out." I look for my phone in the car but can’t find it anywhere. I was typing Jun a message, so it should be somewhere here.

I search through the scattered glass shards and the other things near me, but my phone is nowhere to be seen. "Call Jun—no, don’t call him." I can’t let him come here. The race is about to begin. "Do you have Xion’s number?"

"Yes. I’m his man."

"Call hi–" words die on my lips when my gaze falls on the cracked windshield. Multiple black SUVs screech to a stop near ours, and men in black surround us, guns pointing out.

This isn’t an accident. It’s a trap.

Horror hits when a man aims his gun at me from the broken glass roof. "If you come with us nicely, I will let them go alive."

SHOT

Sasha shoots at the man right between his eyes, causing them all to step back. Getting the opening, he unbuckles himself, "I have sent an SOS message to the Chief. They will be here in ten minutes. Gotta hold them till then." He throws a small gun at me. "Don’t hesitate to fire and stay in."

"I-I don’t know how to use it."

"I know. Just try not to close your eyes when you fire it," he says, pushing himself to crawl out of the small rectangular space in the roof.

SHOTSHOTSHOT

I don’t know how much time has passed. Ten minutes seem impossibly long and scary.

An ominous silence follows.

The black SUVs are still parked around us, and once more, the men in black are moving around me.

"S-Sasha..." I whisper, propping myself up to look out of the roof space.

No, no, no, no.

The sight steals the breath from my lungs. Sasha is lying not too far, soaked in blood, his eyes open, frozen at the sky.

A man hovers over him, gun aimed. He gives me a sinister smile and—

SHOTSHOTSHOT

NO!

"You should have heard me, girl. Now come out, or else he will be next." He aims the gun at the unconscious driver.

I slide the gun inside my jeans to hide it in my panty, kick off my heels and crawl out of the SUV, ignoring the cuts on my body.

Dozens of men. Masked. Black uniforms. A wolf crest on their chest. One of them grabs me roughly.

"We have to leave fast. X’s team is three minutes away."

"It’s fun messing with the King of the Underworld," he says in a heavy accent. "Too bad I won’t get to see his face."

Three minutes.

I count the seconds.15... I let him take me to his SUV. As he throws me inside, I kick at the door hard, making it hit his face. I takes out the gun I’m hiding and aims at the fallen man. "Let me go, or else I’ll kill him."

45 seconds...

The man who seems to be the leader starts laughing as he steps closer. "Do you even know how to use it, girl?"

My eyes shut as I pull the trigger of my gun. "Take another step, and next time, it will be between the eyes." Just a little more time, Yiren. You can do it.

60 seconds...

"Okay, go ahead."

"B-Boss–" the man whimpers from the floor.

"Zamolchi. Ona blefuyet. Eto slabaya zhenshchina, kotoraya vsegda prozhila zhizn’ v zashchite."

[Shut up. She’s bluffing. This is a weak woman who has always lived life in protection.]

I have no fkng idea what that means. But whatever it is, it can’t be good, not when he is smiling and walking towards me.

100 seconds...

My eyes shut close again as I fire twice. One missed, but another hit him in the chest. I now aim at the leader.

"Don’t come close or I’ll shoot."

I can’t stop shaking as the man bleeds out near my feet. I killed someone.

He continues to walk closer.

Voluntarily, involuntarily, my eyes close again as I pull--

A kick hits me on the side of my waist with such force that it slams me against the opposite car, and my gun is lost somewhere. Copper fills my mouth, air wheezes out of my lungs. Another kick, and I hear a snap of bone in my ribs, unbearable pain engulfing me.

155 seconds...

I suck in a painful breath, forcing myself to stand.

Another kick... And everything turns dark.

159 seconds...

Jun.I love you.I wish I could have seen you winning today.
