Chapter 54: Window in the smile

YIREN

I wake up pressed against something warm, strong, and a little too familiar. There’s that scent—the one that’s become my guilty favorite. Jun. I don’t remember walking to the bedroom last night. Did he... move me?

Judging by how I’m sprawled on his side, clinging to him like a baby monkey, it’s obvious I’m the one who didn’t respect the "Line of Control." Great! Teasing will be eternal.

But...One more minute, I snuggle, biting my lip. Why? Because I want to. Sue me.

Slowly, I peel away from his warm embrace, inch by inch, and slide back to the cold side of the bed.

Before I fully escape, my gaze drifts back to him, lingering on his face. Too damn sexy. Long lashes brush against his sculpted cheekbones, his jawline sharp, strong. And his tattooed chest... I feel an involuntary urge to trace my fingers over them, to ask the story behind them. One day, I tell myself. Maybe after this awkwardness fades.

If I’m being honest, things have already changed between us. There’s a shift, something warmer, friendlier. He is a pleasant company to be with. A nice person by heart no matter how annoying he is.

After brushing my teeth, I head to the kitchen to whip up our morning coffee, but Rui has already beaten me to it.

"Good morning, ma’am. Your coffee,"

"Thank you, Rui." I accept it, feeling dissatisfied that I didn’t get to make coffee for us, and settle at the dining table. Bear walks in with a proud swag of accomplishing his job as morning clock. Following him is Jun, looking annoyingly perfectly fuckable with messy bed hair. He leans in, plants a casual kiss on my head, then steals my coffee like it’s his by right, and drops into the chair across from me with complete nonchalance.

Rui’s knowing smile widens, clearly amused by our little show.

Ah, the acting.

"That was mine,"

"Not anymore." He takes a sip, but his face scrunches up immediately. "Did you forget how to make coffee? This tastes like mud."

Rui looks horrified. "I’m so sorry, sir! This is exactly how I’ve always made your coffee. I don’t know what could have gone wrong today."

Jun meets my eyes, holding my gaze just a little too long. His highness loves the coffee I make and is missing it. But too proud to ask for it?

With a smirk, I get up and saunter over to prepare a fresh cup, taking my time because, let’s face it, he deserves a little wait.

"What are your plans today?" he asks.

"Inspect the lake property and take some pictures for my VR prototype. Then I need to check some of the wholesale suppliers, the number my old contractor gave me. During lunch I have to meet Suyin to show her the designs and get her approval. In the evening I’ll visit hospital to see Kai and Ning. On my way back I have to buy some stationary which I run out. Why?"

"Hmm.... Nothing."

When I finally bring the coffee back, I see his hand stretching out to grab it, anticipation on his face. But instead, I wave the cup under his nose, teasing him with the aroma, before taking a sip myself. I settle onto the edge of the table, watching his scowl.

"You had this coming," I say with a grin. "Next time, don’t snatch mine."

"Take it back then."

"Nope. Enjoy the ’mud."

He dangles something shiny in front of me. "So you don’t want the keys to your pickup?"

I leap faster than Bear when he hears the word food, practically snatching them out of his hand. "You brought my pickup here?"

I won’t have to use Uber now. My day just got way easier. Is that why he questioned?

"Yeah, that hideous thing is in the garage," he says with a smirk. "New paperwork in the dashboard."

He takes my coffee again, finally sipping it with satisfaction. I stare, half-amused, half-irritated.

"How did you even—"

"Flew it here."

"Oh, Richie Rich!" It probably cost him more than my pickup’s worth. But the gesture? It melts me, just a little.

Out of the corner of my eye, I catch Rui watching us with a smile. Time to put on a show.

I lean over, positioning my lips such that it looks I’m kissing him whereas I bring my mouth to his ear, "Are you trying to impress me? Because it’s kind of working."

"Impressing you wasn’t the plan, but I’ll take the compliment." He whisper back.

"Hmm... do you think Rui’s buying our act?"

"She definitely bought mine. Not sure about you."

"Then I have to step up my game." And I kissed his cheek, letting my lips linger two seconds extra, leaving him flustered and Rui blushing as I walk to the bedroom. Don’t blame me. He asked for this.

"Um... Yiren?" he call, "Just a heads-up. Don’t get scared when you go to Suyin’s house today."

I pause, "Why?"

"They have pets."

Okayy, so what? "Pets are cute. Why would they scare me? Bear doesn’t scare me. I love pets!"

"But those pets are different."

"Different breeds. But they all same. Chill."

"Don’t come to me crying that I didn’t warn you."

"..."

Why would I?

What does he mean?

SUYIN’S HOUSE

Suyin’s duplex penthouse is an absolute masterpiece, a blend of sleek design and warmth in the city’s most sought-after location. Minimalist and stylish, with family photos giving it that cozy vibe. I mentally take note of every subtle detail to keep her new home just as tasteful.

"Hi, Yiren!" Honey rushes over, beaming his classic million-dollar smile—minus a front tooth. I try to hold back, but a laugh slips out anyway.

"Oh, come on! You’re not supposed to laugh!"

"But you look so cute!"

"I’d rather be handsome, like Uncle and Dad."

"My apologies, Mr. Handsome," I pinch his cheeks. "You look incredibly dashing—even with that little window in your smile."

Just as I’m about to tease him again, something hot and wet swipes across my knees. I look down, and my brain short-circuits.

I did the most logical thing.... I SHRIEK!!!
