Chapter 98: He is back

YIREN’S POV

"WTF, Yiren! I told you not to drink it!" Meimei’s voice snaps in my earpiece. My hands shake as I sit there, waiting—waiting for whatever it was in the beer to act. Bruce is stealing glances in my direction. He’s waiting too.

And then it hits me.

A violent churn in my stomach. My insides twist as nausea surges. Bear looks up from my lap, his paws pressing on my chest as he tries to reach my face.

"Shhh," I stroke his fur. He licks my cheek, his warm tongue catching the tears I didn’t even realize were falling.

"Yiren, don’t worry," Meimei’s voice cuts through the panic in my head. "Zian and Suyin are on the way. Just hang in there."

My vision blurs, and my stomach twists again. I gag.

"Yiren, are you okay?" Bruce’s feigns concern, and I want to hurl my Swiss knife at his smug face. Another wave hits, and I stumble to my feet, faintly registering Bear falling from my lap, yipping in protest as I lurch forward to the bathroom.

I don’t make it far and kneel outside the door as my stomach gives up, bile rising. Black dots dance across my vision.

A hand clamps around my throat, cold and unyielding.

"You’ve wasted enough of my time, you stubborn little thing," Bruce growls, his voice venomous. I claw at his hand, but his grip tightens.

"No, sweet Yiren," he hisses, "If you fight, I’ll tie that fluffy little mutt of yours to my car and drag him around this site until he’s nothing but a smear on the ground."

Bear.

Bear is barking furiously, his tiny frame launching itself at Bruce’s boots, teeth sinking into the leather.

My arms flail until I manage to grab him, pulling him close and shielding him from Bruce’s glare.

Bruce sneers, releasing me with a shove that sends me sprawling onto the floor.

He strides to my desk, checking my laptop. His fingers move swiftly over the keys, his expression one of triumph.

So that’s the monster within him. He was never a friend.

"Yiren---"

"I’m fine. Go with the plan."

"But—"

"Please... this is important." I keep my consciousness awake and Bear secure in my arms.

Bruce really was the IT master. Barely five minutes, and he had everything he wanted copied onto a hard drive. His fingers moved like lightning over the keys, his smug smile growing with every click. But just as he’s about to leave, I act.

With every ounce of strength I have left, I lunge at him, gripping the Swiss knife Meimei laced with special poison and a tracking device that will lodge deep into his bone. The blade sinks into his thigh, and I twist it with all the rage boiling in me.

"You bitch!" he roars, stumbling back and clutching his leg. His face contorts in pain, and he kicks me hard.

I clutch my ribs, gasping for air, but I manage to whisper through gritted teeth, "Now."

The sound of distant voices echoes through the construction site. Heavy footsteps, urgent and loud, coming closer. Bruce’s head snaps toward the noise. His eyes widen in panic, and he curses under his breath.

Without another word, he tucks the harddisk in his bag and bolts for the window, his movements clumsy but quick.

My chest heaves as I lie there, every muscle screaming in pain. I check Bear who is still in my arms as if understanding it’s not the time to be naughty.

Seconds later, the door bursts open, and Zian and Suyin charge in, their faces etched with worry. Relief floods through me, but then I see him.

Dark hair, messy from what must’ve been a frantic drive, deep eyes searching the room until they land on me.

Jun.

A sob escapes me, and suddenly I’m in his arms. He scoops me up, holding me close against his beating heart. His warmth is overwhelming, his scent calming my frayed nerves.

This hug wasn’t just a touch—it was an unspoken vow, wrapping around me like a shield against everything.

I never thought I’d be missing him this deeply.

"Hey," he murmurs, his voice laced with a raw edge of worry. He presses a kiss to my nose, completely unfazed by the fact that I probably reek of vomit and sweat.

"Bunny."

That name—once hated, now cherished. It’s my lifeline.

"Juju," I whisper back, barely managing the words before another wave of nausea hits me. My body jerks, and Jun moves swiftly, turning me so I can retch again, though there’s barely anything left.

His hand rubs soothing circles on my back. "What the hell did he give her?" His voice cuts through the haze, sharp and commanding. "Zian, check her. NOW!"

"I’m fine," I croak, though my trembling body betrays me.

"The fuck you are!" His tone leaves no room for argument. "You stupid, stupid girl. What was the need to drink it?" There’s no anger in his words, only fear and frustration, and it silences any protest I might’ve had.

"Our plan would have failed otherwise."

"Then be it. Nothing is more important than you."

"Nothing is more important than you," I repeat. 𝒇𝒓𝒆𝒆𝙬𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝒎

Zian kneels beside me, his medical kit already out. Jun doesn’t let go of me, though, cradling me in his lap like I might disappear if he lets go. This is the first time someone was genuinely worried for me. Like I really matter.

Suyin hands Zian a syringe and a small vial. "Check her vitals first. She’s shaking too much."

A tear rolled down my eyes....

"Z you are hurting her. Be gentle or I’ll shove this needle up your azz."

"I’m gentle you asshole! She’s not crying because of me—it’s just—maybe it’s you."

"I’m not doing anything. How can it be?"

"Women are emotional creatures and cry in front of the man they—" Zian’s looks at me as he stops himself from saying further and shakes his head. "If you don’t understand why she’s crying then I have nothing to say. You will forever be this dumb."

"Jun..." I call before he murders Zian. His gaze softens as he looks down, brushing a strand of hair from my face.

"Shh, Bunny. I’ve got you," he says, his lips brushing my forehead. "You’re safe now." Tears well up in my eyes again, but this time, they’re from relief. Safe. That word has never felt so good.

"The plan is successful. He took what we feed him. And the tracker is working fine." Meimei says, her finger running on the laptop at a speed that will put even Bruce to shame.

"But who was he?" Suyin asks.

"It was Bruce. Jun recommended me to him. That’s why I didn’t run a background check on him before recruiting." I answer.

"He isn’t Bruce. He is an imposter." He read the confused look in my eyes, "I’ll tell you everything. Not here."

"Are you angry?"

"No, silly. Just pissed that it all escalated because of my one lie." He is blaming himself, but why? "You’re brave, Bunny. Stupidly brave, but brave. And I’m not letting anyone hurt you again."

For the first time that night, I believe him.
