Chapter 242: Please

"Kim, please. You have to help me," she whispered, her voice tinged with urgency. "I know I’m springing this on you out of nowhere, and I don’t even know if you’re single or not. But I’m desperate. I only have tonight. Please."

She barely gave Kim a moment to respond before excusing herself. "Wait here," she added hurriedly, offering a faint, apologetic smile. "I’d planned a dessert. I’ll go and prepare it."

Aiden, who had been on the verge of excusing himself as well, paused mid-motion, watching her retreat with a faint frown etched onto his face. His brow furrowed slightly, and he appeared deep in thought as she disappeared into the next room.

Kim, meanwhile, smiled faintly, the corners of her lips curving upward. But inside she was grinning widely. After all she had been waiting for just such an opportunity. In fact she had created this entire friendship for this opportunity. She turned to Aiden and spoke in a measured tone though, not letting her happiness show. "Aiden, I’m sorry I gestured for you not to acknowledge me earlier. I realize it might have seemed strange."

She hesitated then, her expression shifting to one of contemplation, as though debating whether she should continue. After a moment’s pause, she drew a deep breath, shifted closer to him onot Ella chair and pressed on.

"The thing is," she began carefully, her gaze briefly flickering toward the direction where Ella had gone, "she’s very sensitive about... well, about whatever problems going on between you and her. She’s been confiding in me, telling me how tense everything feels and how utterly alone she’s been feeling lately."

Kim’s voice softened further, carrying an undertone of genuine concern. "If she were to find out that we already know each other, I think it might hurt her even more. She might feel isolated again—or worse, betrayed. When I first met her, I got the impression that she was really struggling. Honestly, I think she might have been contemplating something drastic, something... harmful."

She let the words hang in the air for a moment, their weight undeniable.

"That was why I approached her in the first place," Kim continued, her tone firm but laced with empathy. "I wanted to make sure she didn’t feel completely alone. So, for her sake, let’s just keep pretending we’re strangers, at least for now. I think it’s the best thing we can do to help her through this. If I’d known I would have warned you earlier and not interfered in all this. I am so sorry."

Aidne nodded at the explanation. Ella had indeed been emotionally fragile and if she chose Kim, it might actually be good. After all, this girl was quite practical.

"Alright, Kim. But I would like to discuss this in more detail. What has she talked to you about exactly?"

"Just that your father and you don’t get along and that she is worried about this. I always knew that you did not like your parents, so this is not news to me. Don’t worry. I’ll help her through it and deal with things and I’ll keep you in the loop.."

With that, she tried to hold his hand, in a touch of commisaration but he pulled his hand back. Kim’s smile faltered briefly as Aiden pulled his hand back almost as soon as she touched it but she said nothing, simply staring at his hand.

Her gaze drifted to his fingers, and she noticed something peculiar—a makeshift silver foil ring wrapped snugly around one. A sudden giggle escaped her lips, "Is this some kind of joke?" she asked, pointing at the ring with a playful smirk. "Why are you wearing this piece of... whatever it is... around your finger?"

Aiden didn’t respond immediately. His face hardened. He was not going to respond to this. And so, instead of answering her question, he chose to steer the conversation back to safer waters.

"Just don’t abandon Ella when you’re done playing the big sister," he said firmly in a tone laced with warning. "She doesn’t need some random person walking out on her right now."

Kim’s eyes narrowed slightly, her pout exaggerated as she crossed her arms. "Hey, I’m not one to abandon people," she shot back, her voice rising in mock indignation. "That’s more your style, Aiden. I hold on, even when it gets messy. You’re the one who left me at the first sign of trouble."

Aiden’s eyebrow arched sharply, his lips curling into a humorless smile. His eyes locked onto hers, and the weight of his words struck like a hammer. "You call cheating on me with my roommate a ’small obstacle’?

Kim blinked, momentarily taken aback by the bluntness of his accusation. Her playful expression faded, replaced by something darker and more defensive. "That’s not fair," she countered, her voice losing its earlier lightness. "You know it wasn’t as simple as that. We were already falling apart, Aiden, and you weren’t even trying to fix it. Don’t act like you were some perfect angel in all this."

"I wasn’t perfect," Aiden admitted, his voice quiet but steady, "but I didn’t betray you, Kim. Whatever we were going through, I still respected what we had. You didn’t."

Kim looked away, her fingers fidgeting with the hem of her shirt. For a moment, the silence between them was heavy and suffocating. Finally, she sighed and met his gaze again.

"I thought we were past this," she murmured. "That we could at least... I don’t know, be civil for Ella’s sake."

"I’m civil," Aiden replied coolly. "But that doesn’t mean I’ve forgotten. And it doesn’t mean I trust you, either. So, try not to hurt my Ella, alright? Just make sure you’re really here for her, Kim. Not for whatever agenda you’ve got hidden up your sleeve."

"Why would I have an agenda..." Kim started to ask but before she could say more, Aiden stood up and walked away. He was not interested in listening to anything more.
