Chapter 267: I See

"So, you’re telling me that this person... my fiancé wanted to kill me?" Serena asked, her voice slow and deliberate. She leaned back slightly, the weight of the accusation sinking in. Even after hearing the full story, doubts lingered in her mind. People needed motives to kill—strong, undeniable motives. And here, something didn’t add up.

If what Edwin claimed was true, that her fiancé had helped her secure her place against those responsible for her parents’ and grandmother’s deaths, then why would he suddenly turn around and attack her? For money? For power? She doubted it. That man was already wealthy in his own right, according to Edwin, and had been considered trustworthy. Then what would cause a turn around?

"That is exactly what I was wondering. If he wanted to marry his first love, the woman who has returned to his life recently, he could have simply broken things off with you. The two of you were not yet married. Why hurt you? Until now, I have only been able to come up with one reason."

Serena riased her brows," What?"

Edwin sighed and took out his phone, pushing it towards her to show her the reports he had gathered," according to the reports, while the two of you had pre nuptial agreements signed to protect the future assets, there is one circumstance under which he may be able ot control your assets."

Serena stiffened. It didn’t take an Einstein to figure out what Edwin meant. "If I were to die? Is that the theory you’ve come up with?"

Edwin sighed, "Yes. According to the documents, you made a will some time ago. It seems you declared that if something were to happen to you, and in the absence of any children, everything you own would automatically pass to him. Regardless of whether the two of you are ever married or not, that man stands as your sole heir."

"But you have no proof that he’s behind the attack?" Serena asked, weighing each word carefully.

Edwin sighed and shook his head. "None whatsoever," he admitted. "But there are too many suspicious details to ignore. First, there’s the fact that he went ahead and married his lover when he was originally supposed to marry you."

"Yet, strangely, there’s been no news about it—nothing at all. That, in itself, is unusual. The media was poised to write thousands of articles, to make your story with him the love story of the century—something epic and timeless. But then...They fell silent. Too silent. As if they’d been threatened or forced to back off."

Serena frowned, at that. Silencing the media was not small task. Even she could understand this. Especially if they smelled a scandal. So, whoever her so called fiance was, he was probably already powerful enough. Why would such a person cover her assets? "That does sound strange," she murmured as she tried to piece together the implications.

"And then," Edwin continued, his tone more serious now, "there’s the matter of his current behavior. For now, it appears that he’s still looking for you. The question is: why? Is he genuinely worried about you? Or is he simply trying to ensure that you’re dead? We don’t have an answer to that yet. What we do know is that he hasn’t approached your lawyers or tried to claim anything—at least not yet. That’s why we’re playing a waiting game, carefully watching his every move."

"But... is it possible that someone else attacked me? Maybe an enemy of his? Someone with a grudge?"

Edwin’s expression darkened as he leaned back in his chair. "I’ve been asking myself the same question," he said, "If someone else was involved—perhaps an enemy of his—it would explain certain things. But someone seems to be blocking my way at every turn, making it difficult to get answers. It’s as though someone doesn’t want the truth to come out and they have the power to hide it. I don’t want to push the investigation too aggressively because then whoever attacked may find out you survived.."

He paused, rubbing his temples before continuing. "From what I understand, though, he would have already investigated his own enemies if he suspected them. A man like him doesn’t leave loose ends. If there were any threats to his position or safety, he would have dealt with them swiftly. And if he really loved you then he woudl have retaliated just as harshly. Yet here we are, with no clear answers."

Serena folded her arms,"So you’ve kept the information about me hidden."

"Yes. Because I want to make absolutely sure that he isn’t a threat to you. Right now, your safety is my priority. If he is behind the attack, then any sign that you’ve survived could provoke him into trying again. And there’s another factor..." He hesitated, as though debating how much to reveal.

Serena leaned forward slightly, her curiosity piqued. "What factor?"

Edwin’s lips curled into a faint, bitter smile. "He’s already married," he said simply. "That alone raises questions about his intentions. If he truly cared for you, why the sudden shift? Why marry someone else so quickly? And if he doesn’t care, then... what about your feelings. I... you were marrying him out of love and his marriage would definitely hurt you. That is another reason I wanted to bring you out of there. I...uggghh.. I wanted to protect you from heartbreak."

Serena nodded and stood up," That is very noble of you, Edwin Dawn or Dale Brown, whatever your name is. I.. I won’t ask you for names now since you say they might hamper my recovery."

"But let me make this very clear, if the person I intended to marry is really involved in wanting to kill me, I want the details. I am not some timid lily who will be heartbroken over someone betraying me. I want an eye for an eye. That means, if someone tried to kill me, then I will be the one to make them suffer. I don’t need to hide behind anyone."
