Chapter 277: A Sigh

Aiden stood frozen at the hospital entrance, his shoulders stiff and fists clenched at his sides. The concern he felt for Ella was still there, buried under the weight of his anger. The betrayal cut deeper than he thought possible, and the hatred bubbling beneath the surface was far stronger than his lingering worry. If he was honest with himself, he wasn’t sure he trusted his temper enough to step inside.

Even if Ella was sick, even if she’d been on the verge of death, the pain she had caused him ran far deeper. It festered, sharp and relentless, overshadowing any pity he might have felt.

"Aiden," Nate called from a few steps ahead, "Let’s go."

Taking a slow, deliberate breath, Aiden forced himself to move. His expression turned cold, his jaw tightening as he followed Nate into the hospital’s sterile, fluorescent-lit halls. If Ella wanted to talk, fine—he’d hear her out. If she had any information about Serena, he’d endure whatever it took to get it. For Serena, he’d give Ella whatever she asked for, even if it meant letting go of everything else.

Inside the hospital room, he paused near the door, watching her sleep. She looked just as innocent as she used to when she’d first come to the house, always wanting to follow him around and know what he was doing, play with his toys.. He would have kept away from her, if he’d known then that she would do this to him. That she would take his most improtant person from him.

He closed his eyes, not wanting to look at her and leaned his head against the wall. They’d talk when she woke up.

Nate watched the tortured expression on his brother’s face- his jaw clenched and his hands balled into fists at his sides. For a moment, Nate felt a pang of sympathy. Aiden didn’t deserve this—none of it. But he also knew Ella needed to talk.

No matter how painful it was for Aiden, his presence here was necessary. It was their only chance of breaking through Ella’s defenses. Nate could only hope that her guilt, as overwhelming as it seemed, would finally push her to confess everything truthfully instead of continuing to shield the real culprits.

Not wanting to disturb the fragile silence hanging between them, Nate quietly moved to sit next to Ella’s bed. Her eyes fluttered open, bleary and unfocused, before she slowly turned her head away. He followed her gaze as it shifted to Aiden, lingering on him like she was trying to piece together whether what she was seeing was real.

The change in her expression was subtle but undeniable—the hope and guilt in her eyes were impossible to miss. She stared at her brother, her lips trembling as if trying to form words. Nate saw the moment realization struck, the moment she convinced herself it wasn’t a hallucination. He gave her a small, encouraging nod, silently urging her to speak.

Her lips parted, and her trembling hand lifted weakly as though to reach for him. "Aiden..." she whispered, her voice barely audible. But as quickly as her hand rose, it fell limp against the bed, and her eyes squeezed shut. Tears spilled down her cheeks as she turned her face away. She couldn’t bring herself to say his name aloud—not when she felt so unworthy of even speaking it.

Nate sighed. He knew this wouldn’t be easy, but it still hurt to watch. Breaking the silence, he spoke carefully, "Ella. Aiden is here. Talk to him."

At the sound of his voice, both Aiden and Ella opened their eyes and looked at each other.

Ella couldn’t hold back the wave of emotion that overwhelmed her. Tears streamed freely as she looked at him, her voice trembling.

"Aiden..." she sobbed, her words broken by hiccups. "Can you... can you forgive me?"

Aiden’s answer was firm and unequivocal. "No." freēwēbηovel.c૦m

The single word hit Ella like a blow, and he watched as she closed her eyes and turned her head away, unable to face him. "Ella," he began, his tone sharper than before as he looked at her, "I’ve given you everything you’ve ever asked for. Even when you were stubborn—no, relentless—about protecting Charles Hawk, I gave in to you. I let it go, time and again, thinking you’d eventually come to your senses. But you...Why were you so cruel to me? Why take the only person I care about? I don’t have it in me to forgive you Ella. Even when Serena returns, don’t expect my forgiveness. Not now, not ever."

Ella’s eyes finally opened, the tears she’d been trying to hold back spilling freely. Her voice was barely above a whisper, trembling as she spoke. "Do you still believe that Serena will return?"

Aiden stiffened at the question, his expression hardening further. "Yes."

Finally, Nate, who had been standing on the sidelines, unable to contain his frustration any longer, burst out, "Ella. Are you going to come out with the truth? Or are you going to drag this to the end. Tell us the truth. Did you really kill Serena? You were the last person who saw her!"

Aiden turned his head to give Nate a sharp look and turned away. Even if Ella said a thousand times that Serena was dead, he refused to believe it. Or hear it.

However, as he would have walked out of the door, Ella spoke up," Serena is alive."

He whipped around and stared at Ella. What did she say? Aiden walked to her then," Where is she?"

Ella looked away, scared by the hope in his eyes," I... I don’t know."

Both Aiden and Nate were disappointed at this. For a moment, both had hoped that Ella would have saved Serena.

"I... I was supposed to take her to the cliff and push her down along with the car. Father... Charles Hawk said that someone would come there to help me push the car off. All the way, I tried to tell myself that I needed to do this. To protect myself. But once at the cliff, I couldn’t do it...I pulled Serena out of the car. She was still alive then. Unconscious but alive. Then I...I pushed the car over and called the police, telling them about the accident. After that, I ran away. Later that day, I made calls to all the hospitals and asked about a patient being brough in from a cliff. There was one... And she was alive..."

"The next day, I tried calling again, but they refused to give me information. But I know that Serena had received medical care and that she was alive."
