Chapter 295: A Gift

Ella’s head snapped up at the sound of the door creaking open. Her breath hitched, and her body tensed as a man she had never seen before stepped inside. Who was this person? "Who are you?" But even as she asked, his face reminded her of someone and she paled," Are you Serena’s brother? Is she okay? She just lost consciousness outside? Are you here to see her?"

She looked on as he sent her a look but other than that, gave her no reply, pushing the cloth covered cart that he had brought towards her. She frowned, suddenly feeling scared.

He was dangrous. She could see that as he came closer. Every nerve in her body tightened as she watched him. His eyes were clear but expressionless. It was like looking at something lifeless. Her fear increased as the man stopped near her bed and she could not help but gulp and whisper," Who are you? Why are you here?"

The man sat down quietly and instead looked at her," My name is Dale Brown."

Ella froze.

The name sent a chill down her spine. Dale Brown. She knew that name. Knew it because the kidnappers who had kidnapped her from the hospital and sent here had mentioned him—warned her about him.

He was the one they had ordered her to deceive, the man she was supposed to lie to that Aiden was the one behind Serena’s killing. They wanted her to swear that and had warned her that was the only way she would be able to escape unscathed.

Who would have thought that after the contiuous ups and downs in her life, she would not wake up to be interrogated by this man. She was thankful for it and when she had woken up, she had been dreading seeing him. But that was before... she saw Serena!

Now that Serena was alive, there was no need to lie to him. But then she was confused even more. What was she supposed to do now? Should she let him know Serena was alive? But what if that put her in danger?

"My name is also Edwin Dawn. I am Serena’s older biological brother."

The terror that had just calmed down returned with full force as she realized the gravity of the situation. He was Serena’s brother. That would mean he probably wanted to harm her for daring to hurt Serena.

"What do you want?", she asked hesitantly.

The man smiled then. "What I want? We’ll get to that. So, Miss Ella, I believe you had a hand in the conspiracy of Serena’s murder?"

Ella’s heart stilled but she shook her head, denying it firmly. No! She was not involved in the conspiracy

"I didn’t conspire to hurt Serena," Ella said seriously, "I swear I didn’t."

Edwin said nothing, his gaze unwavering as he looked at her hands which were pulling at the strings of the blanket covering her. The silence pressed down on her making her feel cold and suffocated.

Ella looked away for a moment and swalloed hard before gathering her courage,"I just...I just made the wrong decision at the wrong time."

His eyes narrowed slightly then and though he did not say anything, the sharpness in his gaze made her feel as if she was lying. But she was not...

Unknowingly, she raised her voice, trying to explain, "I didn’t know what they were planning. I swear, I didn’t! It all happened suddenly and then later... they... they told me to lie, that if I said anything that they would blame it all on me, but if I did not say anything they’d let me go. I thought..." Her voice cracked, and she forced herself to meet his eyes. "I thought it was the only way I’d get out alive."

Edwin leaned forward then, resting his elbows on his knees. "So you did everything to save yourself."

"Yes." She swallowed again. "And I’m not proud of it. But I didn’t plan anything. I didn’t want Serena hurt — I didn’t even know she was alive until I saw her! I kept thinking that she was dead. You have no idea how relieved I was to see her alive just now!" freēwēbηovel.c૦m

His gaze bore into her, cold and unflinching. Ella’s heart pounded hard enough to hurt.

For what felt like an eternity, Edwin said nothing — just watched her, weighing her words. Judging her.

Then, finally, he leaned back, exhaling slowly through his nose. "You’re telling the truth."

It wasn’t a question. It was a statement.Ella nodded. She didn’t know why she wanted to convince this man... this stranger that she was innocent. Maybe it was the shadow of the fear that those people had cast on her. This man was too dangerous. She didn’t want to be on his bad side.

While she was still thinking this, the wheels on the cart that he had brought inside groaned and Edwin stopped it at the edge of her bed. Ella stiffened, her eyes flicking to the cloth-draped cart.

"What is this?" she asked warily, her voice barely above a whisper.

Edwin’s expression was unreadable. "Your father’s ashes."

"No," she breathed, but her hand trembled as she reached out. Slowly, hesitantly, she grasped the corner of the cloth and pulled it back.

The bronze urn gleamed beneath the dim lighting. Ella’s breath hitched as her gaze landed on the engraved plaque — "Charles Hawk"

Her fingers recoiled from the urn as if burned. "No. That’s... that’s not possible."

"It’s true." Edwin’s voice was flat, emotionless. "He tried to run. Didn’t get far. Was killed by his own wife."

Ella’s breath came in short, panicked bursts. "He’s... dead?"

"Yes."

"I—" She stopped, her thoughts spiraling. She should feel something — grief, anger, something. But all she felt was hollow. Numb.

Edwin’s gaze remained on her as he continued," Both your brothers are not interested in putting your father in a resting place. Your grandmother thinks that he has run away because his plan was discovered. That is your brother’s way of protecting your grandmother. But he leaves you the option of choosing what to do with the ashes."

Ella shivered as she continued to stare at the urn as Edwin stood up and walked out..
